Persian Gulf states invest billions in missile defences to protect against Iran
Iran counters by developing the Soumar cruise missile with a 1,200-mile range, says the International Institute for Strategic Studies

The Gulf states are investing billions of dollars in advanced missile defences designed to protect their cities against attack from Iran, according to the latest survey of the global military balance.

Iran has countered by developing cruise missiles with precision accuracy and ranges of up to 1,200 miles.

From Kuwait in the Gulf’s northern waters to the United Arab Emirates near the Strait of Hormuz, five countries are installing or upgrading US-supplied missile defences. This huge investment is “driven by concern over Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal,” said John Chipman, the director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

Last April, Saudi Arabia spent $2 billion (£1.3 billion) on Patriot PAC-3 missiles, which are designed to shoot down incoming weapons. These batteries have been deployed to protect the kingdom’s oil installations along the Gulf coast, only 120 miles from Iran.

All of Saudi Arabia’s Gulf neighbours – with the sole exception of Oman – now possess either the same system or the less capable Patriot PAC-2. The UAE is negotiating with America for the supply of the most advanced missile shield – known as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) – which can destroy incoming missiles at a range of 150 miles.

How much the Gulf states are spending is unclear, but missile defence was a large proportion their total military budget of $113 billion last year [total GCC military budget].

Iran has the biggest missile programme in the Middle East, including the Sejjil with a range of 1,250 miles. Last year, Iran unveiled the Soumar cruise missile, a ground-launched variant of a Russian model.

Douglas Barrie, a military aerospace expert at the IISS, said the Gulf states were deeply concerned by Iran’s weapons. “If you’re sitting in London perhaps it doesn’t seem too rational, but if you’re sitting in Bahrain or Saudi Arabia then it looks very rational indeed,” he said.

“The sticker price for missile defence is prohibitive but it’s more prohibitive if somebody drops a ballistic weapon on your city.”

Pointing to Iran’s cruise missiles, Mr Barrie said: “If I was sitting in Tehran, it’s exactly the kind of weapon I’d want.” He added: “If you get the right guidance systems, then you’re talking about accuracies that are within ten metres.

"If they can master the technology in terms of guidance – or if they can acquire it externally – then it will give them a very capable precision strike capability.”

All combined these fiefdoms are spending 113 billion dollars on their incompetent military forces per year plus giving bases to US, France and Britain and they are still afraid of Iran. Pathetic.

It is the Arabian Gulf states, even if that would upset you and Zoroaster combined. Having advanced air-defense missile is quite normal and necessary knowing the Persian style of friendships. Scud missiles launched by the Houthi terrorists were turned into fire works by the Patriot. They failed to make any tangible effect and so will be your North Korean imported missiles (with Tazi names).

You know how Saudi Arabia came about to be, right? You should really read it here: An 'ontology' of Iran-Saudi "rivalry": From Churchill's snobbish sneeze to Abdullah's fear of snakes

And Patriot system is useless against cruise missiles since cruise missiles fly hugging the ground which is very easy specially in a flat desert.

By the way, Iran is a peaceful country. All the bloodshed in the world today is being caused by Takfiris and every one knows where is the central reservoir of the Takfir.

Loser !

There was an "ignore list" in which you placed me in. What happened to that list Soheil jan? Aren't you able to keep your promises to yourself?

By the way, did you notice that Riyadh is not protected by Patriots. I guess the Riyadh patriots have been sent to deal with Houthis. And the rest are stationed in Shia areas of Saudi Arabia.

How do you say incompetence in your tongue?

. .
Most will buy PAC-3.

Yeah, but even PAC3 is useless against MRBM.

THAAD is another story, but is extremely expensive and too delicate and does not guarantee 100% protection. There is always going to be some leakage.

Wow, how smart of you? We needed you to point it out to us so we remember to put the Patriots back in Riyadh. Yes, we would leave the capital without Patriots. That's how intelligent you are, and how stupid we can be.

Don't ask me about Arabic when you are being taught it in school. Your "Supreme Leader" wouldn't have been the "Supreme Leader" he is without being good at it.

.
The political and religious leadership in the region has to wake up and realize that live and let live is the best way to bring lasting peace for every country.

.
stop buying bullshit pac-3, go for s-400/300 series or start building your own MRBM.

.
iranians here can troll all they want about the missiles they have but with the combined air power of the Arab Gulf states it can severely cripple their military capability. At least the Arab states have some form of defense against missiles what can be said about iran a country with a museum like airforce, navy, etc.
