PDF WAR GAMES

A excellent idea in theory but very hard in practice, you will need somebody that is well hearsed in boardgame rules. Also u will need a platform that progresses the game itself and is vissible to all.I don't think we have such a specialist itself.
What can be done,or more feasible i think is pick one historical battle and then ask from the viewers how they would have tried to win it.Compare theirs and then reveal how it was actually fought.Thats the easiest way i could think of.
Of course if we can actually pull of such a game/borrow one from the net it would be epic.

Sounds good. Why don't you initiate the first project?

For a war game to be done, you need a necessarily rule to enforce on the Unit (like apache kill tank, SAM kill Apache, and tank kill SAM)

You also need to have a common map on both side but you can only allow each side to see their own unit and what do they see.

Finally you will need an expert on terrain effect (like infantry is protected more on a reverse slope than a marsh land)

It is not easy to start a war game until all of the above is solved

Then you will probably need a person who know well on command and control in large scale unit to tutor or mentor the person whom playing the game. I don't think even I am up to that job ....

Have any of you heard of time commander?

It's a program that was done by BBC whom invite everyday Brits in the chair of a commanding generals and lieutenant in one of the historic battle.

We could do something like that minus the game engine and simply use a map and some unit done by animation to illustrate the war as progress

You can check out what time commander on youtube

AUST, why don't you give this idea a try as well?

I agree but we can start a simpler way like most RTS do, go for a rock-papers-scissors system in each type of warfare: ground, aerial and naval, take up a similar one into the interactions of these two, for simpler players and for pros we can complicate the game further.

3rd person strategy, perhaps we can have micro-battles as well as an offshoot, give a platoon command and detailed terrain? This can be done as well.
is it gonna be single person shooter or third person or strategy type ???

wow like the game "total war"....its gonna need a khatarnaak graphic engine

Guys, how's about creating a thread/sub-forum solely at warfare roleplay gaming? We can figure out the rules and nitty gritties later but how's the idea?

We can invite seniors like @jhungary and @Joe Shearer and our very own @fatman17 and have a massively detailed fictional roleplay, see how they'd construct their militaries and how they'd use them?

Other rookies can jump in too.

What do you think?

I think this can be more fun than Naswar corner at least for a segment of the PDFers.
Good idea! Count me in!

But what is the type of op for the war game? COIN, conventional offensive/defensive ops, incl in an NBC environment, or is it jungle warfare, desert or mountain? Who's gonna write out the Opening Narrative, Narrative 1, 2 and so on? What would be the combat forces available on both sides (which would need to be specified).

The air force would need to be co-opted too for a war game. Also, who would act or be nominated as umpires?

I think we start small, with a Blue Land commando raid behind Red Land enemy lines with the target as a logistics base. Once we get the hang of the nitty gritties, then we could graduate to higher levels with combat teams and later combat battle groups consisting of armored regiments, mech battalions, arty and AD batteries, combat engineers and so on.

All in all, it's easier said than done!! There's an awful lot of work that'll need going into.

But it should be fun!

Having an option of all of these would be great :D we can pick and choose, eh?

I agree, let's start small. Let's come up with a narrative and go with it, just figure out the base rules and see how the game evolves.

I was more like going for RPing (typing what's being done) but if you can code or know someone who can, we can make something like that too. I'm computer illiterate though :(

What I am thinking, if you want to go small

We can start a game in 2 different thread with a common map, then we need an umpire to update said map. People in one team (say team a) cannot see the other thread (say team b)

Each team make their decision on their own thread, and umpires update the map and show the result in the common map, then all you need to do is set a mission briefing (which us professional can do) and set some rules, and viola, you have yourselves a war game

That's an awesome idea

More like fantasy football + chess of army, navy and airforce units. Each unit needs to have stats. Turns depend on replenishment. Creating a deck would be a mammoth task for one person. Create a stat index of things you need filled.

Here is an example.

Though I would start small scale like Spec ops tasks...but I am in...

That's an amazing picture, where is it from?
