Efforts to bring PayPal to Pakistan have foundered, government officials admit.

A delegation from Pakistan’s Ministry of Information Technology visited the United States last month to convince the international online payment company to bring its business to the country, reports Urdu News.

The company officials told the delegation that Pakistan is not included in its three-year road map, at the moment, as it does not have adequate business opportunities to attract the firm.

Sabahat Ali Shah, a senior official of the National Institute of Technology Board told Urdu News that Pakistan was hopeful to bring the service to Pakistan in order to facilitate those citizens who earn from abroad and find it difficult to transfer their money.

However he added that PayPal reviews its roadmap every year and there is still a possibility of it entering the Pakistani market in the future.

In February, Asad Umar, the former finance minister has announced that the government was committed to bringing PayPal to Pakistan.

PayPal allows people in over 200 countries to send and receive money, and acts as an international bank account.

The bolded part does not make sense to me.

That is definitely not the real reason. It's more likely that the banking and financial infrastructure is inadequate. Or maybe some direction from the state department.

They dont see Pakistan as a market big enough for their foray, probably lack of business opportunity, internet penetration and digital payments infra.

And yet they are already operating in much smaller markets.

I havent seen the data, but I guess they either have higher internet penetrations or a common/well developed digital payments and security infra. Not being tagged with terror financing is also a big factor tbh.

Payoneer is a good alternative atm, no need for paypal. Only downside is individual payments are not accepted only company payments. And bank wire is a better option for individual payments.

"it does not have adequate business opportunities to attract the firm."

PayPal can be found in Palau! Im sure some of you are thinking about the rice dish but Palau is a tiny island nation with a population smaller than the number of students at Punjab University. PayPal, if you're going to lie, at least make it believable!

Most likely reason be inadequate security measures with Pakistani banking system. Just as fatf been saying. God forbid if some terrorist network uses PayPal to fund a terrorist attack. Bad reputation that follows is most likely is what keeping PayPal away from Pakistan. It's time Pakistan course correct itself.

Don't need em.

We need local easypaisa/jazz cash to become more like WeChat/alipay variants with govt pushing for state backed digital currency similar to how the Chinese are going to do in future.

PayPal can suck a lemon.

Sir, China has isolated itself on many fronts because they are patriots and dedicated to lift their own world. We are not like them neither are we their pawns or kids. PayPal, if arrives here, will first & foremost, benefit the huge pool of high earning freelancers we have here. They struggle to bring their money back and get paid on major sites which ise paypal. Unlike China, we cannot abandon the world.
