Parsis proud of the their Pakistani identity - BBCURDU

Because we're very westernised.

Cheers, Doc
Well said. We both are "westoxified". And no shame in that one bit. Look at the success it garners. Although my family is not Parsi but I can relate to what you said. I have absolute respect for Parsis. If Pakistan had one million of "westoxified Parsi" it would be powerhouse by now.

Don't forget this Parsi "Farrokh Bulsara" AKA "Freddie Mercury".

He was openly gay and died of HIV/AIDS like many other gays.

Being Gay doesn't help depleting Parsi population...

He was bisexual. And the reason for the dwindling Parsi population is marriage outside their religion, fewer kids and late marriages. Although that is changing as they do get a lot of support from the community to have more kids.

Got this interesting meaning from Wikipedia about westoxified coined term....first time got something useful from Wikipedia. Iran connection here....

Gharbzadegi (Persian: غربزدگی ) is a pejorative Persian term variously translated as "Westoxification," "West-struck-ness" "Westitis", "Euromania", ...

I'm guessing one of the reasons they speak such fluent Urdu and very little accent is because maybe they're slowly losing Gujarati. Just a guess.

Cheers, Doc

Many are still fluent in Gujarati especially in Karachi where there is a sizable Muslim Gujarati community. Even a number of newspapers are published.

For your interest, the head of the AWACS programme for the Air Force is a Parsi.

May be but I always thought Parsis have always opposed marrying outside Parsis even though we have both Nehru's & Jinnah's daughters marrying Parsis.

No, it is fairly common. But a Parsi woman marrying outside the faith is excommunicated while a male is not. Parsis also have their own civil code. In fact, it is the only community which still is accorded the jury system in India for disputes. Let's just say it is all pretty complicated :)

have been enjoying "mullahoxfied". And look where they are now.

This is really hilariously funny...this mullahoxified terminology....

Yes Iran is the new proponent, Pakistan the new territory.

Also there is no concept of conversions in Parsi community, like a person outside the zoroastrianism cannot be conveted into one and it goes both ways, lineage is pure, direct descent from an ancestor. No inter marriages between different sects.

Reason for the decline in population...

Really nice. :)

Proximity wise(to their homeland) perhaps Parsis in Pakistan feel more at home than those in India.
Technically it also was their ancestral home :D

Western parts of our country had significant presence of Zorastrians in the past (locally known as atish parast)

The most famous Parsis from Pakistan are actually from a mixed background their father is Parsi and their mother is christian
