Panicked Rohingyas entering Bangladesh

Panicked Rohingyas entering Bangladesh

Teknaf and its adjacent areas in Cox’s Bazar are rife with rumours that a huge number of people had been killed in Myanmar in clashes between Buddhists and Muslims

Sunday June 10 2012 01:46:17 AM BDT

CHITTAGONG AND COX’S BAZAR, June 9: Following the recent killing of 30 people in clashes at Mongdu city in Myanmar, hordes of panic-stricken Rohingyas have crossed over to Bangldesh in the last couple of days, sources in the district administration said on Saturday.(The Independent )

Also, around 250 Rohingya people, who earlier entered Bangladesh legally for business, are stuck as they cannot return home for fear of life, the sources said.

The district administration of Cox’s Bazar besides Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have beefed up security and are closely watching the situation at Teknaf border.

Teknaf and its adjacent areas in Cox’s Bazar are rife with rumours that a huge number of people had been killed in Myanmar in clashes between Buddhists and Muslims. This has put the local administration on high alert on this side of the border, the sources said.

“Police are extra-careful not to let the rumour spread in Cox’s Bazar. At present, the situation is under control both in Teknaf and Cox’s Bazar,” Tdknaf Police Station officer in-charge Mahabubul Haque told The Independent on Saturday.

The BGB acting in-charge in Teknaf, Major Md Shafiqur Rahman, said: “The mobile team of BGB is alert to the situation and is resisting illegal entry of Rohingya people through the Teknaf border. To quell any untoward development, Bangladesh Army, BGB and other law enforcing agencies have beefed up vigilance and law and order at the Rohingya camps and adjoining areas.”

“Besides, the Cox’s Bazar district administration and law enforcing agencies are asking people over loudspeakers to maintain peace at Teknaf and Cox’s Bazar, particularly at the Rohingya-prone areas,” Major Rahman further said.

The sources said several hundreds of Rohingyas had managed to enter Bangladesh in the last couples of days, despite beefed up border guard patrolling and other government measures that have so far pushed back around 200 Rohingyas.

A huge number of Rohingya people has already reached Chittagong with the help of some Rohingya leaders living here in the port city.

Some Rohingya leaders, who have voter ID cards of Bangladesh, and certain NGOs are allegedly patronising the illegal immigrants.

The port city is virtually crawling with Rohingyas, many of whom are staying on its footpaths and at the Lal Khan Bazar, Bohadder Hat, Chandgaon, Patenga and Kazirdewari areas of the city.

Rohingyas staying at the Lal Khan Bazar area said they had come here for money. They are either begging or searching for jobs here. Since they can speak the local language, they can fool the police and law enforcing agencies by masquerading as locals.

“We left Myanmar for fear of further attacks after the clashes. We don’t want to return there,” said Momena Begum, who was begging on a Chittagong street. She had entered Bangladesh with her husband and their three children last week

The sources said at least 20 top 30 Rohingyas were illegally crossing the border every day. The local administration fears there would be more as around 30,000 Rohingyas have been camping on the bank of the River Nafi in Myanmar with intent to cross over.

The sources said Muslim Rohingas of Koadang, Bochidong, Tekpara, Boropara, Bolibazar, Naf para, Dikibenia bazar of Arakan; and Amlapara, Moulovi para, Nasir para, Kosai para, Sakik Bazar of Akiab were preparing to leave their country.

The Bangladesh government has taken measures to prevent illegal crossing of the Teknaf border by Rohingyas, keeping in mind that thousands are waiting on the banks of the river Naf for an opportunity to sneak in.

The BGB are keeping a close watch on the boats in the river.

Around three lakh Rohingya refugees are living in Cox’s Bazar, Banderban, Chittagong and its adjacent areas.

There are several Rohingya villages in the country.

Gud riddance these people should be kicked out of Myanmar,

The same way NE India should be divided from India...

N for myanmar they should watch whether these activity turned towards then... as Rohingyas are on way to be majority in Arakan they should be more careful in this regard...else it may not take much time to break away from it which contain a big amount of oil and gas reserve...

I dunno why but you people seem to be in love with country-breaking.

Your ancestors broke India into 2 parts. Next generation broke Pakistan into 2 parts.
And now, this foolish generation wants to break each country bordering his country.

GREAT...

. .
Now let see how Bangladesh tackle illegal immigrants....:smokin:

Unlike "shining India", we cannot afford to play super power games. We give them shelter to save their lives, that is enough. We should not interfere in internal matter of Myanmar, but should keep pressure on Myanmar through other stake holder countries and institutions like the UN to take them back ASAP. But they should not be forced back, they should only go back when they feel it is safe to go back.

Border trade with Myanmar suspended

New Age | Newspaper

Our Correspondent . Cox’s Bazaar

At least 55 Bangladeshi businessmen remained stranded at Maungdaw township in Arakan province of Myanmar since Friday as the immigration and customs office at Maungdaw on Myanmar side remained closed.

Trade between the two neighbouring countries also remained suspended since Myanmar authorities clamped curfew at Maungadw after communal rioting broke out there.

Since Friday, businessmen with valid visas could not move between the two countries through Maundaw in Myanmar and Teknaf in Bangladesh, the two points through which they are allowed to carry out border trade.

On Friday Myanmar immigration personnel sent back on the same boat eight Bangladeshi businessmen, who were going to Maungdaw, said Abdul Kader, Bangladesh immigration officer at Teknaf.

They were going to Maungdaw availing Bangladesh-Myanmar border trade facilities.

Kader said that 55 Bangladeshi businessmen remained stranded at Maungdaw for the last three days.

Border Guard Bangladesh on Saturday strengthened patrolling along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border after the communal riots broke out at Maungdaw in Myanmar fearing it could prompt a fresh influx of Rohingya Muslims into Bangladesh.

BGB commander at Cox’s Bazaar Lieutenant Colonel Khalequzaman said that the authorities in both the countries suspended border trade following the incident.

He said that the immigration and customs offices at the points also remained closed.
The Myanmar government enforced curfew at the townships of Mangdaw and Botidong, where ethnic Rohingya Muslims are in the majority since the midnight of June 8.

The Cox’s Bazaar police arrested three Rohingya Muslims from Cox’s Bazaar Sadar Hospital.

They came with bullets injuries from Maungdaw on Saturday morning.

Cox’s Bazaar district administration increased vigil to ensure safety of n Rakhaine community in the district.

It deployed additional police force at Rakhaine villages in Teknaf, Ramu, Cox’s Bazaar Sadar, Moheskhali, Chakoria and Pekoua.
Thousands of Rohingya Muslims who fled their homes in Myanmar due to persecution have been living illegally in Bangladesh since the mass influx of the 1990s.

Some 236,599 Myanmar refugees were repatriated in 14 years from 1991following diplomatic negotiations.
The repatriation remained suspended since 2005 due to non-cooperation from the Myanmar military junta.

Around 29,000 registered Rohingya refugees are staying in two camps in Cox’s Bazaar while around four lakh illegal Rohingyas are scattered all over Cox’s Bazaar, Bandarban, Khagrachari and Rangamati.

According to international news agencies, four people were killed on Friday in religious clashes in western Myanmar, where police opened fire and the authorities declared a curfew to tackle the situation.

1. Since the Japanese occupation of Burma we have been sheltering these refugees out of our obligation as fellow Muslims. Others who host millions of Rohingyas are: Pakistan, S Arabia, Gulf states, Malaysia and almost all Muslim states.

2. They are expelled periodically, and when pressurized, the Burmese agree to take back some. Most always return with more. The reason is that these people being Muslims, and looking like Bengalees in appearance, are not granted any state recognition. In Burma the citizen is graded according to ethnicity with the Burmans heading the list as Class I. The Muslims are not even classified last. As such they cannot own property, seek govt jobs (almost all are govt jobs), send kids to school, move out of village with written permission of Village Headman, etc. They just spend their days toiing as daily labor or farmer working for the Military or border force Na Sa Ka.

3. Arakan was about 70% Muslim when the British left. Now these people have been pushed north nearer BD border. However, the well-to-do have shifted to Rangun where the Muslims are doing well in business. They number around 1.20 mlln out of a total of 4 mlln.

why may i ask ?

They are not locals and are arabs by root,, but this is not the problem
the main problem is they don't wan't to blend in local culture and are creating problem in Myanmar by creating a arab atmoshphere inside Mayanmar,,recently they raped a gal of buddhist community..

The 'Rohingya' population, according to a 2009 UN estimate, numbered about 723,000; they are not counted as citizens by the military government.[7] [7] Rohingya people invaded the Rakhine state. They are not Myanmar Citizen. Any source for the 1.2 million figure for Rohingya's? I see only 730,000 in the wiki article. 4 million is the total for Rakhine state?

Out of obligation and duty to fellow Muslims and fellow human beings, we should and will continue to give them shelter, when they are running for their lives. We should keep pressure on Myanmar through other friendly countries and multi-lateral institutions like ASEAN and UN to take them back, but we should under no circumstances interfere in Myanmar internal matters, that is for them to solve.

Thanks for the informative post. Some ignorants do not know have a slightest idea about the history of Arakan. They think they are illegal mmigrants from Bangladesh, and someone commented, let the muslims become a majority in Arakan when the reality is from a majority they are becoming a minority without giving any prior thought on what he is typing. Please highlight many aspects of Arakan and its people in your next posts. A person should learn from those who know better than himself.

If that is directed towards me then I said that counting all the refugee... if they already are not majority... Thats why Myanmar is so desperate to evict them as they may claim separate state in the future due to discrimination and considering Arakan has huge amount of natural resources...

Asad talked about 1.2 million figure for Rangun though not sure whether that is true or not....

N the figure of 700 thousand is hugely underestimated figure considering refugees are not counted there... there are news that 600000 rohingyas went to Saudi alone via Bangladesh... 300k-400k of them live in Bangladesh .... n many others in different countries. So count all of them...It will yield a much higher number...
