ISLAMABAD: The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) constituted in compliance with the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Panama Papers case would concentrate more on uncovering new facts than on reinvestigating the available record, sources said.

The sources, however, said it was unlikely for the JIT to complete the task in the allotted period of two months, and rather it would need “several months” to do the job.

They said the JIT would try to get hold of verified documents of the London apartments owned by the family of the prime minister as well as certified details of the offshore companies used to buy them.

The team would try to get these documents through diplomatic channels and for the purpose would send letters to relevant ministries and departments.

The JIT would request the country’s missions abroad to get the requisite documents attested by foreign ministries of the countries concerned and then send them over to it.

The team of investigators also decided that the two letters of Qatari prince Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jaber Al-Thani about the London properties would be verified, the sources said.

However, the entire exercise was unlikely to be completed within the stipulated period of two months, the sources said.

“If the JIT decides to investigate all the allegations levelled in connection with the properties, then it will need several months to complete the probe,” said a senior officer who has led many high-profile investigations.

In his opinion if the JIT decided to find facts about all the questions raised by the apex court it would need at least three months to complete the task.

According to him, the difference between finding the appropriate facts and investigating something was that the latter was considered more comprehensive as it was carried out under the criminal procedure code (CrPC) and could be used in the trial court as valid evidence.

However, in its order of May 5 the Supreme Court empowered the JIT to invoke provisions of the CrPC 1898, National Accountability Ordinance 1999 and Federal Investigation Agency Act 1975 to summon the prime minister, his sons, ministers or any other person required.

The sources said that in order to verify the information contained in the available record, the JIT might call some witnesses involved in the Hudabiya mills case.

The team might also summon the magistrate who recorded the confessional statement of Ishaq Dar to verify it. Mr Dar was an accused in the corruption reference pertaining to the Hudabiya Paper Mills Limited (HPML) that was instituted by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) soon after the then army chief General Pervez Musharraf had toppled the government of Nawaz Sharif.

Later, Mr Dar became an approver and submitted an application to the NAB chairman on April 20, 2000 and appealed for a pardon in the case.

In his statement Mr Dar said: “...The detailed statement of facts, circumstances and events etc leading to accumulation of Rs642 million in the accounts of HPML is enclosed herewith for your kind perusal and consideration.”

However, after re-emergence of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on the national scene, Mr Dar backtracked from his statement.

Meanwhile, the JIT has sought details of income tax returns of Prime Minister Sharif from the Federal Board of Revenue, the sources said.

The JIT also examined the details of assets of Mr Sharif and his son-in-law Captain Mohammad Safdar on Friday and after taking certain decisions for its next meetings, it adjourned further proceedings till Monday.

Waah!!! Jo pehlay din se darr tha, lag raha hai ke wohi hoga.. Akhir "dawn leaks" report bhi initially 1 month main aani thee... Lekin woh matter bhi kahin 7 months main jaa kar "settle hua".. Ab dekhtay hain ke ye JIT kitnay months main settle karay gi issue ko.. Although i dont doubt intentions of most JIT members....lekin yahan delay kar ke matti pao karwanay ki bhtt examples aur tareeqe hain, with a very recent example of dawn leaks report in front of us... Koi instituition JIT se cooperate na karay..phir? Aur ab tu waisy bhi sab instituitions ne "dawn leaks" ke baad hawaaoun ka rukh yaqeenan dekh liya hai..tu koi instituition..is JIT se kiun cooperate karay ga? Dawn leaks ke settlement ne sirf dawn leaks ko nuqsan nahi pohanchaya...balke shayad panama JIT ko bhi hamesha ke liye "settle" kar diya hai...

Why so pessimistic? Now that the investigations have started, all black money will come home to roost

Pessimistc because of "dawn leaks settlement"...... i dont doubt honesty and intentions of most JIT members.. But after seeing "historic settlement' of dawn leaks which will be remembered for centuries...i am sure instituitions ne "hawaaoun ka rukh" dekh liya hoga....so why would they cooperate with this JIT? And when none will cooperate..JIT will keep asking for more and more time..and in the end ...insufficient evidence against NS....and add to tht, advocate and pakora judge....

I can't believe this much crowd gathered in Sargodha.. must be some kind of video editing..

It is even more significant since traditionally Sargodha has been considered a stronghold of PMLn and it is IK's first major rally in that area, even Shaikh Rasheed had advised IK against it.

NS, the sitting PM, failed to attract even 500 people in Layyah. Enjoy his one mile long "jalsi"

That's true. and here is something from history ( my current signature)

After the departure of Holy Prophet (ﷺ), the whole Muslim community was sad, demoralized and disappointed and it was at this point the caliph Abu Bakr decided to send the military expedition to suppress the zakat-evaders / deniers. All chips were down and even Omar was against it. Now contrast this with the lastest compromise made on Dawn leaks by your security guardians.

Pakistanis in Hong Kong call on government to bar Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from entering city

Pakistani residents in Hong Kong have demanded that the government bar their own prime minister from entering the city, saying Nawaz Sharif’s current involvement with accusations of corruption mean that could give the appearance of allowing “alleged criminals to seek safe haven”.

By Saturday afternoon, an online petition to that effect had passed 1,200 signatures.

One of the creators of the petition said he and others would organise “multiple protests” if Sharif enters Hong Kong.

After joining the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing, Sharif is expected to arrive in Hong Kong on Tuesday and leave on Thursday. While in the city, an official source said Sharif would meet the chief executive and local businessmen, and join a business forum.

It is Sharif’s first official visit abroad since Pakistan’s top court on May 5 set up a high-level six-member Joint Investigation Team to probe corruption charges levelled against him and his sons. The commission has 60 days to complete the investigation.

“Pakistani residents and every law-abiding citizen of Hong Kong demand that the director of immigration ... bans Sharif from visiting Hong Kong” until the investigation has been concluded, read the text of the petition launched last week.

“Allowing Sharif to enter Hong Kong ... will have a damaging impact on the reputation of Hong Kong as a city that allows alleged criminals to seek safe haven.”

On April 20, after a year-long process, the Supreme Court of Pakistan announced a “thorough investigation” into corruption allegations involving Sharif and his family, which stemmed from revelations in the Panama Papers in April last year.

The leaked documents showed that three of Sharif’s children owned offshore companies and assets, which had not been disclosed on his family’s wealth statement. Suspicions were raised that they used the companies to hide or launder ill-gotten wealth, or avoid taxes.
Two of the five judges at the top court suggested Sharif should be disqualified and called him “dishonest”. The remaining three ruled that an investigation should be launched. Investigators from civilian agencies and military intelligence services were tasked with examining the money trail, looking at records and collecting testimony from key players.

“The community is deeply concerned about this visit and about what is happening in Pakistan,” said the organiser of the petition Yasir Naveed, a mechanical engineer from Pakistan, who has lived in the city for more than a decade.

“We want to show that Pakistani people are not asleep and that we stand against corruption. We want to send a strong message to any corrupt leader or person in Pakistan that Hong Kong is not a safe haven.”

Naveed said: “Pakistan’s prime minister should be very clear on why he is coming to Hong Kong and Hong Kong officials have to be aware he is under investigation for corruption charges.”

He said that, were Sharif allowed to enter the city, he would help organise protests to “raise awareness” of the issue.

And he said any investment Sharif’s visit does attract would be wasted because of, as he sees it, the country’s bad political situation.
“Even if the entire world will start investing in Pakistan, that would only fill the pockets of the corrupt leaders. The opportunities will not go down to grassroots people,” Naveed said.

There are more than 30,000 Pakistanis living in Hong Kong. Overseas Pakistanis are not allowed to vote in their country’s elections.
Naveed said he is working on the campaign with 10 other Hong Kong-based Pakistani citizens. He said they hoped that other members of the diaspora would organise similar movements whenever Sharif tried to visit foreign countries.

The consul general of Pakistan in Hong Kong declined to comment on the petition.

An official source at the consulate said Sharif would meet Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying on Wednesday morning. The two leaders are expected to discuss China’s “Belt and Road” trade initiative and cultural cooperation.

On the same day, there will be a One Belt, One Road Pakistan Investment Forum at the Shangri-La hotel on Hong Kong Island, attended by 80 to 100 companies based in Hong Kong and the mainland. Leung will give the inaugural speech.

“Pakistan is hoping to enhance the scope of the ‘One Belt, One Road’ and involve Hong Kong companies,” an official source said, using an alternate name for the mainland initiative. “Hong Kong is very important for us, as many international companies are based here.”
In 2013, Islamabad and Beijing launched a so-called China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The US$55 billion investment programme is focused on energy and infrastructure projects.

Sharif will meet Pakistani businessmen and financial institutions in the city. The Post has learned that he had also sought a meeting with chief executive-elect Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor.

Sharif will be accompanied by the country’s minister of commerce and the chairman of the board of investment of Pakistan.
The Chief Executive’s Office and the secretary for security did not respond to queries on the petition.

A short press release was issued on Friday confirming the meeting between Sharif and Leung.

Meanwhile, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to address an audience of 1,000 of his compatriots on Saturday afternoon.
Duterte will make a speech to Hong Kong’s Filipino community at the Regal Airport Hotel, followed by a possible question-and-answer session, according to a group invited to the event.

He is the second leader of an Asian country to visit the city in the past two weeks, after Indonesian President Joko Widodo made a stop in Hong Kong on April 30.

MUST WATCH THIS.

It will make you happy. The LION has roared.

I agree with you and believe that the compromise has not been made for money or any other personal reasons. I don't doubt the sincerity of PA military at all. With that out of the way, I doubt their ability to evaluate the situation. They are not fully aware of the grim consequences this deal/compromise will have in the short and long term on the morale of the nation and the army.

May I take the liberty to slightly amend the later part of your post (I agree with the first half).

They (Army) have evaluated the situation properly and hence (knowingly) taken such a BIG risk. It also shows that they were prepared.

Morale of the nation is low for the 70-years, so not much change there.

Morale of the troops is important, particularly that all our neighbours are firing at us and there is internal turmoil too. However, all this will take only a moment to change - i.e., after the Panama FINAL outcome. The nation and the troops will be lifted if the decision is what we all are looking for. Let us hope for a good outcome there.

There comes time in the life of a leader when he has to sacrifice himself and his credibility for the sake of a larger and future good. Bajwa has acted as a leader and I salute him for this.

To explain the above paragraph, I give the example of best leader of ALL - our beloved Prophet PBUH. At the time of "Sulah-i-Hudaebiah" there was intense resentment amongst the 1400 followers who were there. So much so that even after the pact was done and Prophet PBUH asked everyone to open their Ihrams, no body moved. This example shows that how deeply the followers were affected and how disillusioned they had become. All this changed very soon once the outcome of the pact became known.

I guess the only other alternative he had, other than what he has done, was that when NS would have advised him to fire his DG - ISPR for that tweet he (COAS) should have refused, resigned and go home. This may have resulted in creating more pressure on NS.

Martial Law or Compromise for now ... there were no other practical and logical choices.

Army chief resigning would have been far worse for the moral of the forces, especially at this point in time when many battles are being fought. This is not peacetime.

I seriously think and recommend to all here that we stop this nonsensical pessimism.

True.. If he would have resigned and go home, it would jave been a much more honorable thing to do... And this move would have gained sympathy for him, and instituition of army, in the eyes of public ....unlike now...where army's reputation has taken a huge dent.... But then, who cares??

In other news...
On samaa...ticker is running

Justice Gulzar ki car ko haaddsa... Justice Gulzar mehfooz rahay...koi zakhmi nahi hua

ThankGod... May Allah keep him safe...... @PakSword @Guvera ,.. Pehlay hi kam log hain in jaisy.... Allah in ko lambi zindagi ataa karay
