Pakistan’s upcoming elections a major focus for Facebook’
Facebook gears up to tackle spread of fake news during Pakistan's upcoming general elections
By Web Desk Last Updated Apr 5, 2018

LOS ANGELES: Following data breach scandal involving Russia’s influence in the US elections, Facebook has now deployed technology tools like artificial intelligence and thousands of people to work on security as the company’s “major focus” this year is to protect the integrity of upcoming elections in Pakistan and a few other countries.

According to Zuckerberg, the year 2018 is a big year for elections and Facebook is enhancing its security features to prevent the spreading of misleading information.

“In the US Senate Alabama special election last year, we successfully deployed some new artificial intelligence (AI) tools that removed Macedonian trolls who were trying to spread information during the election. We now have about 15,000 people working on security and content review and we’ll have more than 20,000 by the end of this year,” Zuckerberg told reporters during a conference call.

“This is going to be a big year for elections ahead with the US midterms and elections in India, Brazil, Mexico, Pakistan, Hungary, and others. This is going to be a major focus for us,” he said.

Zuckerberg said Facebook had taken big steps by taking down Russia’s Internet Research Agency (IRA) pages that were targeting the US. “Since we became aware of their activity after the 2016 US elections, we’ve been working to root out the IRA and protect the integrity of elections around the world,” he said.

“There have been a number of important elections that we’ve focused on. A few months after the 2016 elections, there was a French presidential election and leading up to that we deployed some new AI tools that took down more than 30,000 fake accounts….In German election, the company developed a new playbook for working with the local election commission on share information on threats it received, he said.

“We have more work to do here and we’re going to continue working very hard to defend against them. There’s the Mexican presidential election, there are big elections in India and Brazil as well as in Pakistan and Hungary and a number of other countries and the US midterms, of course,” he said.

Zuckerberg pointed out three different types of activity that required different strategies for fighting.

“Economic actors, who are basically spammers, the second are governments trying to interfere in elections, and then the third is just polarization and sometimes lack of truthfulness in what you’ve described as the media, If we just make it so that the economics stop working for them then they’ll move on to something else. I mean, these are literally the same type of people who had been sending you Viagra e-mails in the ’90s. We can attack it on both sides. On the revenue side, we make it so that they can’t run the Facebook ad network,” he said.

The second category is the national security issues’, like the Russian election interference. “In order to solve that, what we need to do is to identify these bad actors…What we need to do is to just track that really carefully in order to just be able to remove it from Facebook entirely,” he said.

Social media is the biggest tool for propaganda and #FakeNews.

We need legislation on this and dearly. The amount of crap on these so called social media sites is utter disgrace to the word 'social' or 'media'

. .
fb should be banned in Pakistan for at least 4 weeks before the elections in Pakistan.
Agreed FB can be utilized for changing the minds of voters.. But this is virtually..
What about physical and practical corrupt practices during election i.e.. horse trading, Rigging etc.

That will only benefit the other traditional parties and be a loss for PTI - which heavily relies on social media.

.
FB will have little impact. I am concerned about the impact these news channels have and how they can be manipulated using public tax money by the government in power.

Agreed. Those factors are huge. The ECP has done nothing regarding those elements.

What’s with Pakistani culture and it’s addiction with banning? Ban this and ban that. Ban anything that reads and looks unpleasant to eyes and ears. Ban it because we are not capable of challenging it.

ISPR warns public against phishing threat alerts on social media
Last Updated On 19 July,2018 12:32 pm
The spokesman has requested the people to visit official website of ISPR for crosscheck.
RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) – The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday has issued a warning about the phishing threat alerts that are viral on social media.

The spokesman has rejected the alerts doing rounds on internet in the name of ISPR and termed them as a bid to sabotage the upcoming general elections 2018.

He further clarified that the media wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces has not disseminated such alerts and requested the people to visit official website of ISPR for crosscheck.

Earlier, ISPR Director General Major General Asif Ghafoor, in a public awareness message, had warned of hoax telephone calls being made to general public by individuals impersonating as Pakistan Armed Forces officials.

He said that the impersonators try to seek personal details like CNIC, bank accounts etc on the pretext of census verification etc.

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor also asked the public not to respond to such calls, and immediately report the matter by dialing the emergency helpline UANs 1135 and 1125.

On the other hand, hugely popular WhatsApp messaging service began a week-long publicity campaign in Pakistan, offering tips to spot fake news, days before the country holds a general election.

"Together we can fight false information," says the full-page ad in an English-language daily, listing ten tips on differentiating rumors from fact.

"Many messages containing hoaxes or fake news have spelling mistakes. Look for these signs so you can check if the information is accurate," it says.

"If you read something that makes you angry or afraid, ask whether it was shared to make you feel that way. And if the answer is yes, think twice before sharing it again."

WhatsApp began a publicity campaign in Pakistan offering tips to spot fake news ahead of election
ISLAMABAD (AFP) - The hugely popular WhatsApp messaging service began a week-long publicity campaign in Pakistan Wednesday offering tips to spot fake news, days before the country holds a general election.

"Together we can fight false information," says the full-page ad in an English-language daily, listing ten tips on differentiating rumours from fact.

"Many messages containing hoaxes or fake news have spelling mistakes. Look for these signs so you can check if the information is accurate," it says.

"If you read something that makes you angry or afraid, ask whether it was shared to make you feel that way. And if the answer is yes, think twice before sharing it again."

WhatsApp also announced the implementation in the country of a new feature allowing recipients to see if a message is original or forwarded.

The company had bought full-page advertising in India on July 10 after a wave of lynchings in the country were linked to viral "fake news" spread by WhatsApp about alleged child kidnappings.

WhatsApp, owned by Facebook, had come under pressure from Indian authorities to put an end to the spread of rumours, which have caused the deaths of more than 20 people in the past two months.

Millions of people use WhatsApp in neighbouring Pakistan, where rumours, false information and conspiracy theories are ubiquitous. Such messages spread quickly, with no real way for recipients to check their veracity.

Pakistan also has a history of mob violence, and videos such as the murder of Mashal Khan -- a journalism student accused of blasphemy who was killed by a mob in April 2017 -- circulate rapidly.

Parliamentary elections are scheduled for July 25.
