Pakistan's next generation national warships: Jinnah Class Frigates

With evolving technology PN needs to focus on better design. If they do it right a frigate can completely out gunned and Indian Navy destroyer presently in service

I believe some VLS cells these days have rotating missile cannisters like the barrel of a revolver to house smaller medium range missiles for different uses (like anti-sub, anti-ship and anti-air etc.). So yes, one cell can have multiple missiles housed.

Don't know if Turkish MDAS have this option though...

WTH ?? They are still building these things with pot metal...don't know why cost is astronomical. We're talking about India here.

Kolkata class cost is US $1 billion, taking into account the cost of 052D is US $550 million. Indian shipbuilding costs about twice as much as China.

This means that the cost of making 054A class ships in India should be $500 million.

If Pakistan and Turkey want Jinnah class's ability to exceed 054A, and want the cost to be less than US $550 million (052D). Then their shipbuilding capacity needs to be much stronger than that of India.

The labor/shipyard and hull material cost on warships is less than 20% of the total cost. The main cost item is the systems carried by the ship. If you import these systems, the cost goes up. Or if this is a developed country where these engineering services and subsystems are very costly, the total costs will still be high. However, since most of the total cost will remain within the sector, the real cost will be acceptable.

Pakistan must create its own naval ecosystem. It should design its own ship, manufacture it, put its own radar on it and use its own missiles. There is no alternative way to achieve the ideal of a strong navy.

I suggest Pakistan to wait patiently for 054B. Chinese Internet Rumors:
1, 054B is slightly better than FFGX.
2, 6000+ ton, 32 VLS.
3, Composite diesel electric/gas power system.
4, The speed is greater than 30 knots.
5, HHQ26 + DK10A.
6, New phased array radar.

Universal VLS system ? I mean is it quad packed as per rumors .?

The design of Jinnah class is in tentative stage. What has been revealed is not the finalized model. The configuration will change as per the requirements. However the basic layout will remain pretty much same. That is, the frigate displacement (3000+ class), and weapon load out (8 SSMs), will remain same. But, other components, like sensor suite, VLS modules, defensive systems will keep changing as per availability of tech, funds, and requirements. Jinnah class represent PN's solution to it's own strategic requirements. It will form the backbone of future PN.

Those who wish to see Jinnah class as heavy displacement warship will have their wishes full filled in different shape. (Provided the plans remain the same)

Can you tell us some good news about "SMASH" ?
The name of missile onboard Type-54AP has not be revealed yet. But the missile is super sonic, and will be standardized in upcoming warships.

The J-Class was clearly meant to be a workhorse frigate. IMO the 3,300-ton displacement was intentional and meant to fill a 'middle' layer between the light ships (FACs, OPVs) and the large ships (054A/P). It's meant to balance capability and cost. However, with the right technology (e.g. quad-pack VLS), the PN can unlock a lot more capability. In any case, the PN will buy this ship in larger numbers: at least 6 but possibly 8-12.

However, the J-Class is also a developmental bridge. If this is successful, then - IMO - the PN will design a large frigate (5,500+ ton).

I believe the development direction will be two fold. After developing necessary expertise, Pakistan will construct ships of larger displacement (heavy frigates, destroyers) as well as smaller displacement (Corvettes, OPVs).

Operating mostly in Arabian sea having more ships of medium class is more effective than having fewer ships of larger size.
PN is probably thinking on some line and looking for a medium size ship which can be built in large number.

In case requirement for large ship can be purchased from China as these will not be in big numbers.

However its quite strange to note that PN is looking for a complete new design. Why not continue further development of the Turkish ship we are already building at home.

The program for JINAH Class Ships , is well thought out a continuation of cooperation between Turkey and Pakistan for developing our bilateral relations.

Quad packed configuration for air defense will be exercised in Tughril class frigates in the future.
It has be a different missile than ly80. Do you know which Chinese SAMs are quad pack configure able?

I could only fm300n, and it’s surprising why PN didn’t just go for it as it looks comparable to the camm-er PN is getting from Italy. But the quad configuration is currently only possible in the newer VLS:

Rumor has it that it is. But these are only the information circulated on the Chinese military forum, and they have not received any confirmation. PLAN plans to build fifty-two 054A ships. I believe that after the completion of the production plan of 054A, we can see the true face of 054B.
