While adressing on the occasion, Dr Sania said: “Ginger can emerge as a major crop and can be a game-changer for the farming community. I'm actually shocked that we don't grow ginger, but good to know we have started. Diversification is the name of the game.
This government seems to have started so many new programs that deliver actual productivity, awesome.

All will be wasted if we don't get IK/PTI for another term. PMLN and PPP will destroy what's left.

I am gobsmacked. All Asians have been growing ginger for centauries, I grew up in Africa and African farmers had been growing ginger there for decades.
How could Pakistan lose the ability to grow ginger ?

. .
Extremely surprising that so far no ginger was grown in Pakistan. Tell me that there is something wrong with this news. I mean, its not some exotic crop

.
We import $100m worth of ginger which is only increasing every year. No wonder all that add up to huge trade deficit. Good to see finally something been done.

I was surprised too, ginger is used by everybody... But then previous governments only cared about imports. No wonder Pakistan go to IMF or beg around for $$.

.
Ginger cultivation map of India. I am sure the soil and climatic conditions in Punjab, J&K and Western UP are not very different from those in Pakistan. Moreover you can see that it is grown in every state, which means it is not a big deal to grow it! Ok, quality may differ, but doesn't mean it won't grow at all.

That's the unseen and untouched benefits of Darnomics...loans upon loans to jack up imports and disincentivize local production...

Good news is we will see the return of Darnomics in about a year and half after the next election.

Another aspect of this is our greedy, unimaginative and short sighted industrialists, many of whom are part of the every gov't including the current one...

They will continue to import items from abroad as long as they can made obscene profits on it.

Pakistan is still a huge importer of goods from India via Dubai...we still import most of our vaccines from India.

We will import items from China even though we can easily produce them locally, since much cheaper to just import from China...

. .
Impression that zero ginger is grown in Pakistan is incorrect. Actually what Pakistan produces is very small (this is mainly due to low quality and low yield per hactre, so there is lower incentive to farmer for choosing ginger over other crops) and can't fulfill the country's demand, due to this Pakistan heavily relies on ginger imports (Pakistan is top most ginger importer after USA, whereas India is the top manufacturer but chine is the top exporter. The activity that article is referring to is a pilot for enhanced yield and not for first ever production.

Fun fact: Pakistan is also re-exporting ginger.

.
There's a strong lobby in Pakistan who won't let any crop imported from India, to be grown in Pakistan.

Some stats from planning commission report
There's a strong lobby in Pakistan who won't let any crop imported from India, to be grown in Pakistan.
Overwhelming majority of what Pakistan imports (ginger) is from china not india
