Pakistanis are spending about $3.5 billion on Eid ul Azha this year, according to analysts. This includes $2.8 billion worth of livestock and another $700 million on clothes, shoes, jewelry and various services. This amount represent a huge transfer of wealth from urban to rural population in the country.

Animal Sacrifice:

Eid al Adha commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his most beloved son Ismail (Ismael) when asked to do so by God. It followsHajj, the annual pilgrimage of Mecca by Muslims from around the world each year. Muslims believe that God had angels remove Ismael from under the knife of blindfolded Abraham and had him replaced by a lamb.

Economic Activity:

The commemoration includes sacrifice of cows, goats, lambs and camels on Eid al Azha. This year, the media reports indicate that 4 million goats, 2.7 million cows, 800,000 lambs and 30,000 camels are being slaughtered in Pakistan on the occasion.

Using a conservative average price of $600 per cow, $200 per goat or lamb and $800 per camel, the total cost of animals adds up to $2.8 billion. Various services offered by, transporters, butchers and slaughter houses are in addition to this amount.

Apparel Purchases:

The Eid celebration includes buying and wearing new clothes and shoes as well as women's jewelry and other accessories that add up to another $700 million spent in Pakistan.

Charity:

Animal hides and significant amounts of meat are donated to various charities and the poor on Eid. Charities like Edhi Foundation are big beneficiaries of this largesse.

Rural Economy:

Rural residents who raise animals for sale on Eid bring in billions of dollars into the rural economy. These inflows help provide livelihoods and alleviate rural poverty.

Summary:

Eid al Azha this year represents a $3.5 billion worth of economic activity that is generating jobs and helping the charities and the rural residents of the country.

It is "up to 30,000" camels, not 300,000. And how reliable are the figures here?

"According to Gulzar Feroz, the central chairman at the Tanners' Association, more than 2.7 million cows/bulls, four million goats, 800,000 lambs, and up to 30,000 camels will be sacrificed this year."

==========

Edit: Even after the correction, the sum still adds up to 2.4 billion, assuming these figures are not imaginary.

Again trying to discover something negative even in this. :rolleyes1:

Hopeless, some people are in their hatred and negativitiy!

The figures are pretty accurate. I have direct involvement in charity industry and can attest these figures given by the tanneries guy.

So the tanneries are reporting their intake accurately to the tax authorities? These figures might be under reported or not. Who knows?

This is 3.5 billion spent by affording and goes into pockets of poor...cattle herders poor farmers...
Thats good..

This is one thing our surkhas will never understand...u have to make people work and pay them...a world where every one sits at home.. smokes hashish and unlimited sex on government handouts ...does not work

Let's see now:

2.7 million cows @ 500 lbs dressed meat per carcass = 1,350 million lbs beef
4 million goats @75 lbs dressed meat per carcass = 300 million lbs mutton
30,000 camels @ 750 lbs dressed meat per carcass = 22.5 million lbs camel meat.

All told, this adds up to 760 million kgs or about 760,000 tons. Over three days. This is about 25% of the total annual consumption, give or take a few botis.

The Eid-i-Qurban market has expanded. Yes a lot of money flows in from overseas Pakistanis who prefer to fulfill their religious obligation back home, probably to maintain connection with their roots.

“There is no denying the fact though that a greater number of locals are inclined to spend more liberally and the overall price movement fails to deter them”, a market watcher observed.

According to reports based on the Pakistan Tanners Association, over 10m cattle heads (2.5m cows, bulls, buffaloes, 7.3m goats, 80,000 sheep, 30,000 camels) worth Rs250bn will be offered for sacrifice during the three day festival.

What the nation spends on shoes, clothing, accessories, grooming, transport, hospitality, fridge and freezers, etc. is in addition to this.

A lot of money goes to those who grow charaa of goats and cattle, and to small transporters to deliver the cattle, it really has a healthy impact on the economy.

the spending of $3.4 billion on Eid ul Uzha is a positive sign for economy of Pakistan. But it required Government role in the equal distribution of wealth among masses. Moreover, on this blessing day billions worth leather come in the hand of political, religious parties , who use it for self-interest.

Do you think figures are underreported?
