Pakistan's Basmati kingdom under attack

Pakistan, being an agro based economy, is primarily known for its aromatic Basmati rice in the world but it may lose the position in Middle East as Philippine is all set to introduce the same Variety of rice in the region.

The foreign country which once itself was a rice importing country is now looking forward to export the Basmati rice to the gulf region after being self sufficient in various varieties of rice.

I dont think so the demand is very high and high quality Pakistani rice is becoming more expensive and more scarce to get a hold on..The population of the world constantly needs to be fed and as such there is no shortage of food demand.

yea. and i think basmati is over rated. its good only for pulaos and not for south indian food. however south indian rice can be used for various cuisines.

No one consumes it even in India except the south .

The Indian food which is eaten around the world is North Indian , Punjabi , Hydrabadi or Western India

Its because of land not country. As i was in peshawar and had a cup of green tea. I asked the owner name of brand and it was same as i used at home. I asked him how do he make tea. He said kucha ye peshawar ke pani ka kamal hee

Same is with tea. I make tea here in Norway and it very different to tea in Pakistan.

Here in UK, I am seeing more and more of Pakistani Basmati rice; not only in small ethnic shops but also in aisles at large super markets.

Quality Basmati seems to have become synonymous with Pakistan. I see bags labelled as 'Pakistani Basmati'; I have not seen a bag labelled as Indian or Phlippine's or Vietnamese Basmati rice.

Goto Kingston Tesco near miltonkeynes or Sainsbury MKcenter. There is a specific brand - Tesco Indian Easy Cook Basmati Rice . Do a google search you will find it. Pakistani kababs are amazing though !!

Have you tried a masala Uthappam or Fish curry with Rice cooked Kerela style.. Dont knock it till you try it

I don't understand what I wrote.. So no point. And obviously u haven't been to Singapore Malaysia Sunnyvale, California or gone to veeraswamy in London which is one of the oldest in uk.

There are many companies in Dubai which import basmati rice from Pakistan and re-pack and re-brand them and export them to europe ....

I guess the assumption that across the world south indian food is less preferred or doesnt taste good is actually incorrect. To name a few famous southindian restaurants spread across the world- saravana bhavan, malabar cafe,Chennai Dosa restaurants are doing great in all those countries. Ive personally been to those restaurants in Chicago(US), Jacksonville Arkansas(US), Wembley ( london, UK), Croydon ( london, UK) and have seen north, east, west and south-indians loving those delicacies at the same time the native English, mexicans, Americans, Spaniards all enjoying them.

So I guess you need to explore the different south indian delicacies before making such larger than a life kind of statement. My parents hailing from WB and Kerala, I love each and every delicacy that India has to offer. My personal favourite being Steam cake with kadala curry ( a mallu dish I guess !!) and neer appam with chicken curry from Mangalore. mouth watering it is !!

You are right, I found it. In my area, it's only Pakistani (branded) Basmati that is popular.

ohoho.. that's a heavy statement to make my friend. South Indian food is not just about idli & dosa. All four states have different cuisines & you can find variety within a state too. Costal areas have their own cuisine, which is worth trying.

Coming back to your point about north Indian & punjabi & western indian food being famous around the world.. yes!! ofcourse.. due to maximum expats are from these part of the world. & that's why!!

True, Pakistani basmati rice is everywhere in UK so I don't see any threat for basmati rice... we have huge demand for these high quality rice and a huge potential to increase exports in every country of the world that imports rice
