I think people are too narrow minded in understanding Islam as they see Islam in light of Christianity which is an organised religion.

To many people focus on the recipe. The fact is any concept is on as good as way it is applied or interpreted. A good recipe in hand of bad cook will make for terrible food. A bad recipe in hands of a good cook will pass muster.

Everything is in interpretation. Edhi was inspired by the same Islam that made him world class humanitarian. On the other hand the terrorists who killed those scholl children at APS claimed to be inspired by the same Islam. The guy who blows himself up bear a Shia gathering is also [by his esstimation] inspired by the same Islam. The human ability to interpret something knows no limits. Thus your use of the "water" in that it can take the shape of any vessel it is poured into is rather apt.
