Most of us are aware of the pathetic state of affairs of Pakistani universities.

On top of that, there's lack of career counselling for the youngsters. When entering any university, students have absolutely no idea about what they're getting into. Since PDF is very famous and visited by a lot of young Pakistani netizens, I thought of creating a thread where Pakistani graduates can just write a couple lines about the university from which they graduated and how their view of the university changed before and after their time there. This can help many clueless youngsters from taking wrong decisions about their life and career. I'm sure PDF has many members who graduated from famous Pakistani universities. Just write the name of your university and comment that why or why not you'd recommend younsters from choosing that place.

I graduated from IST, Islamabad. The university has good lush push and appearance. Real tough to get good gpa. And a pathetic choice for job prospects. A few IST graduates get into Nescom/Suparco. For the vast majority, IST will kick you out as an orphan after 4 years. And that vast majority contains many brilliant minds and 3+ gpas. Not recommended.

IST is bad? I had a friend who did his Bachelors and Masters there in Aerospace, was taken up by SUPARCO, and he was then sent by SUPARCO fully funded to attain a phD in the field.

I am a graduate of IST and can give another opinion on it. I agree with the OP that IST has a very serious problem with respecting its alumni. To utilize links with alumni is second step, but they actively refuse to recognize anyone who has graduated. You will be turned away from gate if you're an alumni. Alumni of a university are an asset but IST has successfully managed to alienate all its alumni.

OP is also correct that your GPA will be lower than other places like NUST. The administration says it's because industry recognizes ISTs quality but that is mostly a lie. Maybe some SPD places recognize it but most places don't. No one internationally (obviously) does.

All that being said IST does teach you all you need to know to make a career for yourself in aerospace at least. Most professors are good. There are always bad apples. Unfortunately in my time there wasnt much real research. Someone more recent can give a better perspective on this aspect.

At the end of the day it really is about how motivated you are. If you're looking for an easy ride to get a comfy job IST is not the place for you. If you're able to get 3+ GPA theres a good chance you'll end up in AWC desto suparco or something if that's your cup of tea.

The curriculum was certainly up to the mark. I am saying this as someone with masters and phd experience in US. It might not have been taught in the best possible way but I had most of the tools I needed to succeed in graduate school.

If I had some advice for IST it would be:
1. Respect and use their alumni. This helps greatly for jobs for new graduates.
2. Get more young motivated faculty as opposed to ex air force babay that are only hired to teach courses but do no research.
3. Focus on masters and PhD programs. Theres too much focus on undergraduate right now.
4. Reduce workload for undergraduates. There is an unfair amount of workload that doesnt add anything of value.

Given that most people enter universities to get a good job, IST is not a good option. Except for a few defence orgs, IST is still unknown in the industry. Hardly any industries know or recognize an IST's graduate's worth. And IST administration has no plans (still) to make this better. All this after 4 years of intense 'ragra'.

Given that most people enter universities to get a good job, IST is not a good option. Except for a few defence orgs, IST is still unknown in the industry. Hardly any industries know or recognize an IST's graduate's worth. And IST administration has no plans (still) to make this better. All this after 4 years of intense 'ragra'.

Degrees dont really matter that much as much as skill and experience
I had a friend who studied in Open University and managed to work as a database admin at Kamra Complex I mean sure it would be nice to have the reputation as comsats and fast but hy at the end of the day your skills are what they need right?

Skills are important but a good university goes a long way to get you placed in a good position. There are more than 120 engineering universities in Pakistan, it's no coincidence that all top notch indistries only hire from Nust, Giki, Lums and UeT Lahore.

Okay so i studied my BS from consats Abbktabad. Its have lush green environment and almost 50-50 ratio of boys and girls. Department of pharmacy, electrical engibeering and IT is really good. I studied BS Civil. Oyr department was new back then so average... Shortage of P. Hd faculty in Civil dept, three P. Hd initially but all left and new came at a point we had no P. Hd in dept (actually there is some issue of increment structure due to which P. Hd faculty is discouraged to stay so they would leave. Dont know if its still same). But i heard things are changed now and it have 4 P. Hd. (all this i am talki g about civil dept. Other depts specially Electrical are really good). GPA is hard to get, also Co. Sats grading system is absolute but different then HEC, here you get 2.7 gpa on 70% of marks. And no Placement effort by UNi, do that yourself...

Now i am enroled at NUST in PG program. Its good. Specially MS Transportation, GOP established an organization called RDC in nust risalpur, its related to designing of road structures. Good environment. No phundo at Risalpur campus here only foji jawan and bloody male civilians
