More than 50 dead in gunfights, air strikes in Orakzai, Kurram

PESHAWAR: At least 51 militants and four soldiers have been killed in air strikes and clashes with security forces in the restive northwest over the past week, officials said Sunday.

On Sunday, planes bombed a tribal belt bordering Afghanistan, killing 26 militants, a senior paramilitary official told AFP.

“Jet strikes today killed 26 militants and wounded 15 others and destroyed their seven hideouts in different areas of Upper Orakzai and Kurram,” the official said.

Separately, at least 25 militants and four soldiers were killed in Bara, Khyber Agency in gunfights between March 12 and 18, the official said.

“Four security forces personnel embraced martyrdom and 12 others were wounded in gunfights which left 25 militants dead,” he said.

The official said that no militant had been killed in custody and added that the military operation was directed at the militants belonging to the Taliban-linked Laskhar-e-Islam group that is led by warlord Mangal Bagh.

The group has been involved in recent suicide attacks and kidnapping in Peshawar, which borders Khyber, he said.

Two local intelligence officials confirmed the clashes and death toll.

Independent verification of the incident is not possible as access to the area is restricted by the military.

Some 18,000 people fled their homes in Khyber in October last year amid fears of a fresh outbreak of fighting between the army and militants linked to the Pakistani Taliban.

Pakistan’s seven tribal districts near the Afghan border are rife with homegrown insurgents and are strongholds of Taliban and al Qaeda operatives.

Militants have killed more than 4,800 people across Pakistan since government troops raided a mosque in Islamabad in July 2007.

What question buddy.. ?? 14 dead bodies are found a day after Military completes an armed operation in the area with their identities obscured. The same men who went missing after a day military launched the operation.. My bet is on Military doing this.. Militants like to publicize their hits and killings.. Because thats what gets them a name in the trade.

If you are asking me to prove it, that would be really stupid since I neither have the access nor the inclination to do that. Its your civilians who died, so I guess it will be your Human rights bodies that will try and sort this out. If they dont due to any pressure/fear of the state machinery, well too bad for the dead ones...

Look just because their was military operation in that area doesn't prove that these 14 "civilians" were also killed by military. May be they were kidnapped by Militants and they were killed by them for various reasons like spying for the military etc. The area was bara which is famous for abductions for several reasons by Militants. Just because military operation was conducted in the area where these bodies were found. doesn't prove they were killed by military. There are several militant groups active in that region and those militants are a good suspect in this case.

Let me make it simple for you. I want something explicit like that story from occupied Kashmir where officers and soldiers of Bharati army killed civilians to earn cheap money in fake encounters. Something explicit and clear like that. Then we can argue whether these 14 people were killed by militants or not. Till now we don't have proof.

By the way military has denied that it is involved in this incident.

The political administration and security officials denied having any knowledge of the bodies but later said their identity was yet to be ascertained. In the afternoon, security officials issued a press note, saying they had nothing to do with the killing of innocent people and “any such report is baseless and devoid of facts”.

MIRANSHAH: At least eight people were killed and 15 others wounded in clashes between troops and militants in the restive tribal belt, officials said Monday.

Four militants and one soldier were killed when militants stormed a security forces check point late Sunday in Miranshah, bordering Afghanistan.

The military retaliated with an assault early Monday on suspected militant hideouts outside the town, but the attack left three civilians dead and 15 wounded, security officials said.

“Militants attacked our check point in Miranshah on Sunday evening and killed one soldier, we retaliated… and shot dead four militants,” a senior security official told AFP.

On Monday morning “we fired shells and destroyed five shops in Datakhel near Miranshah,” from where military convoys had recently come under attack, he said.

Two security officials confirmed the civilian deaths in Monday’s attack, but the military refused to do so.

“Three civilians were killed and 15 were injured when the security forces fired shells at the suspected militant hide outs,” one of the officials said on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media.

And I never said it proves it.. It looks to me that it is the most probable case.. There can be many what ifs, but same story may appear differently to different people.. Also since there has been a lot of similar situations in Balochistan and your supreme court is investigating the same..

Off topic.. Take this up in a Kashmir thread..

Soldier, five civilians killed in Waziristan | Newspaper | DAWN.COM
MIRAMSHAH: Security forces resorted to indiscriminate firing and shelling in North Waziristan Agency on Sunday, killing five innocent people, one of them a child, after two military convoys were attacked.

According to sources, the security personnel began shelling some villages in Mirali tehsil in retaliation against an attack by militants on a military convoy.

Local people said the forces pounded Embraksha, Nowrek and Hakimkhel villages in Mirali tehsil with heavy artillery pieces after militants attacked the convoy with machine guns. One soldier died in the attack and several others were injured.

The shelling was continuing till the filing of this report. The heavy shelling claimed the life of a child and injured several other people.

The sources said the villagers have been forced to flee to safe places. “People are running towards Haiderkhel village for shelter,” a villager told Dawn by telephone.

A roadside bomb ripped through another military convoy, injuring several soldiers.

Local people said that two women were killed and another injured when security personnel resorted to indiscriminate firing after the bomb explosion.

The soldiers also fired mortar shells, one of which hit a house, killing a woman and injuring two others. Later, one of the injured women died in a hospital in Miramshah, according to doctors.

The political administration imposed a curfew in towns and villages along the main road after the bomb attack on the military convoy. Interestingly, the security personnel were targeted despite a warning against such attacks by the Shura-i-Muraqiba (observation council) of the Taliban. The five-member council has representation from major Taliban groups, including the faction led by Commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur.

Gul Bahadur and elders of the Uthmankhel tribe have signed a peace agreement with the government.

Meanwhile, a man and a woman were injured when an anti-personnel mine exploded in Ghulam Khan tehsil near the Afghan border.

Local people said that security forces had planted the mines to protect them from militant attacks.

A camel was hit by a mine. When the woman ran towards the camel to save it, she too was hit by a mine. A man was hit by a mine when he tried to rescue the woman.

The animal died on the spot while the injured people were taken to the government hospital in Miramshah.

Curfew in Miramshah: Three killed by shelling, 2 in clash | Newspaper | DAWN.COM

MIRAMSHAH: Intense shelling by security forces left three people dead and 42 others, including women and children, injured in North Waziristan on Sunday night and Monday and a curfew was imposed in Miramshah.

According to officials, two militants were killed and three security personnel injured in overnight clashes near Miramshah.

Security personnel demolished five buildings in Miramshah bazaar.

The administration has convened a jirga of Utmankhel tribe to negotiate a ceasefire.

The clashes erupted after militants attacked the Ameen post near Miramshah late on Sunday night. Firing of rockets and mortar shells turned the area into a battlefield and a fierce clash continued for about an hour.

“People could not sleep the whole night because of loud explosions,” a resident said.

Officials said three security personnel were injured and two attackers killed.

The administration imposed a curfew in Miramshah after dawn and army and paramilitary troops, backed by armoured personnel carriers, started demolishing buildings.

An official said militants were using some buildings as shelter after firing on security personnel. A hotel and four other buildings were razed with explosives.

The Miramshah bazaar and adjoining areas were without electricity.

Witnesses said the security forces fired mortar shell at a building in the town. One of the shells killed three people and injured 28 others. The injured were taken to the main hospital where doctors said three of them were in critical condition.

Four students were injured by another mortar shell explosion. They were going to an examination hall when the shell exploded near them.

A large number of students could not appear in annual examination because of the curfew.

Pakistan security forces should avoid this trap of increased civilian casualties. Thats exactly what the militants want. To portray PA as the villain and militants as the heroes for the local population.

Military operation in Bara: Thousands trapped in conflict zone | Provinces | DAWN.COM

PESHAWAR: Thousands of people are trapped in the Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency because of the ongoing military operation.

All roads are blocked and there is no transport for people to get out of the conflict zone. Army and paramilitary forces recently launched the offensive against the banned Lashkar-i-Islam group headed by Mangal Bagh in Malikdinkhel, Sipah, Qamarkhel and Akakhel areas.

Affected people say that security forces have blocked all routes making it impossible for the thousands of families to leave for safe places.

They said that Sipah and Malikdinkhel were considered to be strongholds of the Lashkar and the operation was being carried out within a 30 kilometres radius of Bara.

Officials in the Fata Disaster Management Authority (FDMA) told Dawn on Tuesday that 9,233 families had so far reached the Jalozai relief camp in Nowshera.

The situation is very critical. Thousands of IDPs immediately need tents, food and other goods, said an official at the camp where around 16,000 displaced families from different parts of Fata have been living for some time.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) is pitching new tents in the camp to accommodate fresh IDPs.

UN relief organisations have provided some tents and food at the relief centre. A senior official said that 4,000 families had reached Jalozai on Monday and another 1,200 to 1,300 families arrived on Tuesday.

We estimate that 20,000-plus families will flee their homes in Bara and come to Jalozai, he said, adding that UN agencies had been informed of the situation.

Sources said that UN had requested the Central Emergency Response Fund-II to provide $1.6 million for IDPs from Bara. The UNHCR and World Food Programme are providing tents and cooked meal to newly arrived IDPs in the camp.

It is said that thousands of people need immediate evacuation, but transporters were not allowed to operate in the area. Adam Khan, a resident of Akakhel, said he had reached Jalozai camp and got a tent and now he would go back to Bara to evacuate
women and children.

There is heavy shelling from all directions and people are stranded in homes, he said, adding that army and Frontier Corps had sealed all routes. Officials in the provincial capital are complaining of a lukewarm response from the federal government to the crisis-like situation.

Response of the federal government is absolutely pathetic and we don’t know the reason. It can turn into a humanitarian crisis if UN agencies stop their work, an official said.

Relief workers said a large number of families were still without tents. Women and children are sleeping on the ground. We are pitching tents, but it is very difficult to accommodate such a large number of people given limited resources that we have, said Noor Akbar, an employee of the PDMA.

Pakistan shouldn't have done this. But recently, even after signing peace accords, the terrorists attacks and kill innocent Pakistanis, we must take action against them.
