Pakistani-American Convicted For Exporting Computer Hardware to Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission

Found this article

Nice article.

Wasn't he anti-islam and anti-urdu?
I mean he was a cammunist I believe so anti- god itself

Shaheed Bhagat Singh was hanged at the age of 24 by the British government. He was a Socialist or a Communist till the point he was hanged. A true patriot. I quote from my thread from last year whose OP is by the Indian Muslim historian Irfan Habib :
I will conclude with the last moments of Bhagat Singh’s life, as reported by his close associate Manmathnath Gupta, he writes:

“When called upon to mount the scaffold, Bhagat Singh was reading a book by Lenin or on Lenin. He continued his reading and said, ‘Wait a while. A revolutionary is talking to another revolutionary’. Bhagat Singh continued to read. After a few moments, he flung the book towards the ceiling and said, ‘Let us go’.” [Emphasis added]

This is the true legacy of Bhagat Singh which we need to commemorate. He read all possible revolutionary or even anarchic literature to build his vision of independent India. It also tells us why we need to listen to those who read and write; they may imagine India differently, but they do not deserve to be punished for what they read or write.
Please read the rest of the OP and the subsequent thread discussion.

The big deal is violation of US export laws, something that will not go down well in DC, with its consequences.
Only consequence, max fine (250k) or few years in jail. Seems like he pleaded guilty instead of fighting it in court, most probably they will let him lose after fine. Happens all the time.

Ain’t nobody got time for this in DC. It’s not like he was shipping Sierra supercomputer out of Livermore laboratory.
He is a hero!
He is not a hero, he was running a business, and tried to cut corners.

.
Welcome to the club. US losers have been targeting Iranians for decades for "exporting technology" even as insignificant as Iphones and Microsoft office software etc .:-)

. . .
Dang dude, so how or what do you guys use for MS office?
Iranians are very resourceful and have mastered the art of dodging impotent US losers sanctions, and developed various Farsi based office applications.

I guess you guys also use pirated copies like rest of the world.

. .
Then why plead guilty to the criminal charges?

Of course, and Pakistan is trying not to be lumped in with that disaster, is it not? This will probably not help its attempts to be seen as a responsible partner.
Criminal for one person is hero for others... As per your definition dr abdul qadeer khan is one of the world biggest criminal.

Brother, lets put at this way, we all knows altaf hussain is a big time criminal. Why he is living a lavish life in UK ? Why he is given assylum ? These western countries are controlling us through these criminals... So atleast we ourselves should not call our hero and supporters as criminals ...

Yes. Even make spares for every kind of US fighter aircraft from F-14A to F-5E. Iranians wrote the book on ingenuity. The US losers even destroyed or mothballed all the remaining F-14 so that Iran can not buy spares. However over 60 airframes in pristine condition are still flying and have been upgraded.

Persian Tomcats: How Iran Keeps its 1970s F-14 Fleet Viable Through Domestic Modernisation961 × 420

So software piracy is a joke and even kid in Tehran can do it. Iran has a very robust software development and IT sector though.

. . .
Or maybe even a Celeron processor
The US embargo on Pak was ridiculous. They refused simple pressure sensor sales to Pak as it might be used in missiles, at that time.

I have used those 'embargoed' computers for my graduation. Today's laptops are more powerful than those.
And I used them totally for a graduate curriculum like anywhere else, it was not for a military/defence tailored course.

The guy just violated the law and nothing else (no proliferation). My sincere apologies and condolences for him and his family.

Pakistani-American Convicted For Exporting Computer Hardware to Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission

A Pakistani-American man has pleaded guilty to criminal charges in the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois after he confessed to illegally exporting sensitive computer hardware from the US to a top Pakistani nuclear research organization.

He pleaded guilty to conspiring to export goods from the US without obtaining a license from the Department of Commerce and to submit false export information. The conviction is punishable by a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

According to details, 66-year old Obaidullah Syed, resident of Northbrook, supplied high-performance computing platforms and servers to Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) between 2006 and 2015.
He also lied to the US manufacturers that the computer hardware being exported from the US was only intended for Pakistani educational institutions. However, in reality, he knew that the end-user of the hardware would be either the PAEC or a research institute that trained its scientists and engineers.
Since Obaidullah misinformed them, the US manufacturers submitted export documents to the Commerce Department which showed false end-users for the US-made goods.
Obaidullah had owned two companies: Pakistan-based Business System International Pvt. Ltd. and Chicago-based Business System International USA.

He conspired with his employees in Pakistan to first export computer hardware from the US without the permission of the Department of Commerce in violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and then supply it to the PAEC.
For the unaware, PAEC is a government agency responsible for research and development of nuclear power, promotion of nuclear science, energy conservation, and the peaceful usage of nuclear technology.
Long before Obaidullah exported hardware and software to the PAEC, the US had already designated it as an entity that may pose an unusual or extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the country.

We salute each and everyone who contributed to our atomic program.
