Turkish industry to upgrade foreign Cobra attack helos - IHS Jane's 360
Turkey is to undertake a modernisation programme for a foreign operator of the Bell AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter, it was announced on 24 June.
Turkish Aerospace Industries and Aselsan signed a USD24.8 million contract the day prior to the announcement to carry out the upgrade work by the end of 2020. No further details pertaining to either the customer or the work were disclosed.
Not including Turkey, there are still eight military operators of the AH-1 in Bahrain, Iran, Jordan, Pakistan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United States. Both Iran and the United States can safely be ruled out as customers for the Turkish upgrade for political and industrial reasons, while Pakistan is looking to replace its ageing Cobras with the latest variant AH-1Z Viper (a deal for which is expected to be concluded shortly).
