Pakistan voices concern over threats of anti-satellite weapon tests to regional, global stability

November 3, 2019

Pakistan has expressed concern over the threats posed by anti-satellite missile tests to regional and global stability and called for steps to prevent outer space from emerging as a new realm of conflict and arms race.

Speaking in the General Assembly’s Disarmament and International Security Committee, Pakistan’s delegate Husham Ahmed drew attention to a demonstration of anti-satellite capabilities in South Asia earlier this year, obviously referring to India’s testing of an anti-satellite weapon in an operation code named ‘Mission Shakti’.

“In the absence of strong legal instruments regulating the testing, development and deployment of ASAT (anti-satellite) weapons, other states could also follow suit by demonstrating such capabilities,” he said while participating in a debate on Outer Space matters.

“The potential integration of Anti Ballistic Missile systems and their components into space assets adds another worrying dimension to this matter,” Husham Ahmed, Director in Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Pakistan was firmly opposed to weaponization of outer space, he said. “While our dependence on outer space applications is on the rise, the risk of its weaponization is also growing.”

The Pakistani delegate called the Conference on Disarmament (CD) to immediately commence negotiations on the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS) to comprehensively address the gaps in the international legal regime governing the exploration and use of outer space, with the Chinese-Russian draft treaty being a good starting point for discussions.

Outer space, the Pakistani delegate added, was “our common heritage”.

Why protest make our own. If we have not given attention to the outer space are we expecting our enemy to be sleeping too. World is evolving around us and we need to follow suit or we are going to left behind.

We barely send any satellites, how will we make a missile to shoot one down.

our defense budget is less and priorities are different, for us important thing to first address the main threats

Very easily.

our defense budget is less and priorities are different, for us important thing to first address the main threats
India is preparing to dominate in all spectrums and you are worried about the budget?

All lines are being crossed by an enemy that shows no respect for international law or decency. We should be doing what we need to all gloves off.

Form an NPT type of grouping. Prevent others from developing the tech.
No ones gives a shit about such non proliferation treaties , those who want will develop it nonetheless

Indian defence ministry and MEA should thank this Pakistani delegation to raise the alarm of threats from such tests and calling the world community that there is a need to regulate this sector so that other countries do not follow suit.
India shares this concern as well. Its amazing how India and Pak interests have aligned in this sector.

They will give a shit when there is a threat to big countries. You should understand that such space treaties are important to keep the technologies among ourselves. Look at MTCR, it allowed us to co-develop a improved range version of Brahmos while prevented quite a lot of proliferation.

Enemy is not going anywhere, Paksitan has sufficient deterrence, and already our forces are replying them with same brute force, beside that war is not just about weapons are equipment its all a huge exercise of logistics and how you can make it more expensive for enemy, one example is Iran, americans will never attack them because Iran has a capability to spark the war in entire region and to make it very expensive, same is the case in indo pak scenario, india can never think of attacking pakistan on full scale and the reason is .. it will be a costly war for india and no body will be winner in it
