Six top militant commanders, including LeT's Abu Dujana, and Burhan Wani's successor Sabzar Ahmad Bhat of Hizbul Mujahideen, were among 132 terrorists killed in encounters with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir, so far this year, according to official figures.

Security forces and police are going after the militants, as they have fiercely intensified operations to hunt them down by acting on the hit-list of top terrorist leaders in Kashmir.

The number of terrorists killed in the past seven months this year is the highest in the same period over the past seven years.

"As many as 132 terrorists have been killed in encounters with police and security forces in Kashmir Valley in over seven months this year," a senior security official told PTI.
While 115 militants have been killed till July-end, as many as 17 militants have been killed since then till August 9, as per official statistics.

While 38 LeT militants were killed in over seven months till August 9, 37 Hizb terrorists were eliminated along with three of the al-Qeada-linked Zakir Musa group, and another 54 unidentified militants were killed, mostly on the LoC.

"The relentless operations by the security forces have defeated the desperate attempts by Pakistan and its agents to spread terror in Jammu and Kashmir. Operations will be continued," a senior Army officer said.

The slain militants included six top commanders of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen who were killed in fierce encounters in Kashmir during the period.

Top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Abu Dujana, a Pakistani national wanted in connection with several terror attacks, and his aide, were gunned down on August 1 by security forces in Hakripora area of Pulwama district.

Dujana was wanted for many attacks on security forces and political workers in south Kashmir.
He was variously described as a category 'A' or 'A++' militant by Army and police officials. He was carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head.

On July 1, another top LeT commander Bashir Lashkari and militant Azad Malik were killed in a firefight with security forces in Anantnag's Brenti village of Dialgam belt in south Kashmir.

Lashkari was involved in the killing of six policemen in the district's Acchabal area on June 16. On May 28, top Hizb militant Sabzar Ahmad Bhat, 27, who was a close associate of slain Hizb commander Burhan Wani, was among two militants killed in an encounter in Tral, in south Kashmir.

Sabzar, who was seen as the successor of Wani, dropped out of school in his Rathsuna hamlet in Pulwama to join the Hizb in March this year. Wani was killed on July 8 last year.

On July 12, Sajad Gilkar was among three Hizb militants killed by security forces in Budgam district of central Kashmir.

Gilkar had played a key role in the lynching of Mohammad Ayub Pandith, a deputy superintendent of police, near Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of capital Srinagar on June 22.

Besides them, top LeT commander Abu Haris was killed in Bandipora in north Kashmir on February 14, followed by killing of Abul Ali in Budgam on April 22, while Abul Mala, Anis Bhai and Abu Mansoor of LeT were killed in Kupwara on March 15, Abu Umar of LeT was killed in Sopore on January 3, Abu Maviya was shot dead in Bandipora on January 10 and Sher Gujri was slain in Pulwama on March 9.

Most of the encounters took place in south Kashmir's Pulwama, Shopian and Anantnag, apart from Bandipora and Kupwara in north Kashmir and Budgam in central Kashmir, sources said.
In 2010, the highest number of 156 militants were neutralised in the first seven months of the year followed by 102 in 2017, 77 in 2016, 61 in 2011, and 51 each in 2014 and 2015 respectively, the data revealed.

Similarly, 43 militants were killed in 2013, followed by 37 in 2012. The hunt for commanders and terrorists of various outfits has been intensified under operational strategy, security officials said.

The counter-terrorist grid continued to maintain dominance and deny any space to the terrorists.

Synergised hard-intelligence-based joint ops with the J&K Police and Central Armed Police Forces have been the hallmark of these operations, they said.

Police and security forces pinned down and killed those involved involved in the killing of seven policemen and lynching of Pandith immediately, officials said, adding, that a massive hunt has been launched to track down LeT commander Abu Ismail who has emerged as the mastermind of the deadly attack on Amarnath pilgrims on July 10.

In June, the Army released a "hit-list" of 12 top militants who it aims to "go after". The hit-list carried the names and pictures of the militants along with the areas they are active in and the strikes carried out by them. Some on the list, including Dujana, have been eliminated over the past one month or so.

Three Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militants, including its self-styled operational Chief Yasin Yatoo alias Mehmood Ghaznavi, and two army men were killed in an overnight encounter in south Kashmir's Shopian district on Sunday.

Three soldiers, including a captain, were also injured in the 18-hour-long fierce gun battle. Police said three militants were killed in a fierce gunfight at Awneera village, 70 km from here. The encounter started after Army’s 3 Rashtriya Rifle and special operations group (SOG) of police launched a joint operation at around 6 pm Saturday following a tip off about the presence of five militants.

"As the security forces were engaged in house-to-house searches, the hiding militants in a bid to break the cordon fired upon them, triggering off a fierce encounter. In the initial firing five army men, including a Captain, sustained injuries," they said and added the injured were shifted to 92-Base Hospital in Srinagar, where two of them succumbed.

The slain army men were identified as sepoys Ilayaraja P and Gowai SumedhWaman. Reports said as the encounter was going on, locals rushed out of their homes to pelt stones on the forces to help the holed up militants to escape. The police responded by firing tear gas shells and pellets, in which several protesters were injured.

Sources said the operation was halted for the night but the forces maintained a cordon of the area to stop the militants from fleeing. "Intermittent firing continued throughout the night and the operation began in full swing in the morning in which three militants were killed after forces blasted off four houses where they were hiding. Two militants managed to escape from the encounter spot," they revealed and said the operation was called off at around 12 in the afternoon.

The slain militants were identified as Umar Majid Sheikh, Irfan ul Sheikh and Ghaznavi. Earlier, there was some confusion about his identity and it was presumed that another militant Adil Malik was killed in the gun-battle. However, later the third slain militant was identified as Ghaznavi. One Kevyt Konekivaan (KK) series rifle used by Ghaznavi and two AK-47 rifles were recovered from the encounter site, police said.

Ghaznavi, 41, was the operational chief of the outfit in Kashmir and was one of the longest surviving militants in the Valley and had successfully mobilized the Hizbul cadres after the killing of Burhan Wani in July last year.

A resident of Budgam in central Kashmir, Ghaznavi first joined militancy in 1996 and was arrested several times. After his release in 2015, he went missing and a Hizbul statement declared him dead. However, after the killing of Burhan on July 8 Ghaznavi appeared in south Kashmir and addressed massive public rallies in different parts of the region. It was then that he again came on police radar.

In a separate incident, militants opened fireafterpolice and army started a cordon and search operation at Wahab Parray Mohalla in Hajin area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district. Police said that the firing wounded two cops who were referred to hospital. Militants managed to escape taking advantage of heavy stone-pelting, police said and added the CASO has been called off.

135 militants, including top commanders like Ghaznavi, Abu Dujana, Sabzar Bhat, Bashir Lashkari and Junaid Mattoo, have been killed so far this year in the Valley, which is highest in the last eight years. The security forces are going after militants as part of operation "hunt down" and on the basis of a “hit list” of militants.

Meanwhile, a civilian injured in an explosion in Dalgate area of Srinagar on Saturday night succumbed on Sunday at SK Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) hospital.

“The pellets penetrated deep into the chest of the young man,” said a local of Pulwama.

Security forces on Monday arrested two Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) militants in a dramatic takedown in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

The arrest comes a day after security forces gunned down three militants, including Hizbul Mujahideen commander Yasin Itoo alias Mehmood Gaznavi, in an encounter in south Kashmir’s Shopian district. Two soldiers were also killed in the gun battle.

Police sources said after being tipped off about movement of militants in the area, they laid a check point, manned jointly by police, army and CRPF, at Bakihaker crossing in Handwara.

The two militants, approaching towards the crossing, tried to flee after seeing the forces from a distance, a police spokesperson said, adding the joint security team, however, noticed their escape bid and alerted their companions posted in civvies at a distance.

The second team pounced on the duo and soon overpowered them. Two pistols, two hand grenades and some “incriminating materials” were seized from them.

During interrogation, the two, told the police that they had joined the HuM only recently and were tasked to create disturbances in Handwara by indulging in violent activities.

The two arrested militants are from central Kashmir.

Police said they also revealed that despite a lot of efforts by the militant commanders based in Kashmir and Pakistan occupied Kashmir, youth from Handwara by and large were not attracted towards militancy.

“The two revealed that most of the militant organisations based in Handwara/Kupwara region are facing problems due to depleting number of local recruits. They further revealed that youth of the region are not ready to pick up gun, despite a lot of efforts by the militant commanders based in Kashmir and Azad Kashmir,” the spokesman added.

The official said that the militant outfits had succeeded in recruiting some local boys in Kupwara region recently but they either surrendered before police or were caught by security forces within a short span of time after joining militancy.

“ It is because of this pressure upon the valley based commanders of militant outfits to disturb the peace and tranquillity of the region that they are making efforts to recruit militants from other regions and bring them to Handwara to create disturbance,” the spokesman said.

The two were identified as Younis Ahmed Mir (19) alias Sarfaraz, a resident of Budgam district and Tahir -ul-Islam (21) alias Sajad Afgani, a resident of Shalteng in Srinagar district.

Top commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was killed in an ambush in south Kashmir’s Pulwama on Wednesday, as two recently injured security personnel succumbed to their injuries.

Muhammad Ayub Lone alias Ayub Lelhari was killed in an ambush laid on the Pulwama-Srinagar stretch. Police sources said Lelhari, who was “No.1 LeT local militant” from Pulwama, was spotted travelling in a vehicle after a specific tip off. “It was a brief encounter,” said the police spokesman.

Lelhari, also considered the main local face of the LeT in south Kashmir, was once close confidante of slain LeT operation commander Abu Dujana.

Sources said the vehicle carrying Lelhari was ambushed at Pulwama’s Banderpora area. “The militant tried to flee towards an apple orchard but was fired upon and killed,” said the official. A policeman was also injured in the encounter.

Sources said Lelhari was being shifted to Srinagar for treatment after he suffered injuries in the 16-hour Samboora gunfight in Shopian on Sunday, in which three militants including Hizbul Mujahideen operational commander Yasin Itoo were killed.

“He (Lelhari) was one of the most wanted terrorists. It’s a great success for the forces,” said Director General of Police, J&K, S.P. Vaid.

Injured jawans dead

Meanwhile, a CRPF jawan, identified as Constable Reyaz Ahmad, who was injured in a grenade attack by militants in Budgam district on Monday, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday in a Srinagar hospital.

An Army spokesman said injured soldier, Narendra Singh, who sustained bullet injuries from across the Line of Control in Rampur Sector on August 7, also succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

Lt. Gen. J.S. Sandhu, Chinar Corps Commander, and all ranks “paid homage to the martyr”.

Singh (43) had joined the Army in 1994 and hailed from Village Haripur in Dehradun. He is survived by his wife Asha Devi and two daughters.

“The mortal remains of the martyr were flown for last rites to his native village in Dehradun where he would be laid to rest with full military honours,” said the army spokesman.

LeT reacts to PM’s speech

Meanwhile, militant LeT on Wednesday said it rejects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “fake sympathy”.

“It is a long followed tradition by Chanakya puppets as a saying goes, ‘Malice concealed behind sweet talk’. If Mr. Modi is concerned about the Kashmir issue then why youth are being martyred on a daily basis?” LeT chief Mehmood Shah in a statment issued in Srinagar.

He said Mr. Modi “is denying the ground realities”. “Muslims are being selectively targeted. Freedom of religion is scarce in Kashmir. If Mr. Modi is concerned about the solution to the Kashmir dispute, then he must vacate Indian forces and let the UN resolutions be implemented,” he said.
