LoC shelling: Indian, Pakistani field commanders to meet on Monday | Zee News
Last Updated: Sunday, September 20, 2015 - 20:30

Jammu: A flag meeting at the brigade commanders-level will be held tomorrow in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district to address the issue of ceasefire violations on the Line of Control (LoC) which divides the state between India and Pakistan, a defence official said.

"The ceasefire violations had escalated in last few days and had resulted in large number of civilian casualties and collateral damage to property. Brigadier-level field commanders from both sides will discuss on Monday the modalities to defuse the tense situation," army's Udhampur-headquartered Northern Command spokesman Col. SD Goswami told IANS in Jammu.

The meeting at Chakan De Bagh crossing assumes significance because during the last fortnight, Pakistan has violated ceasefire on the LoC in Poonch and Rajouri districts of Jammu region 20 times.

This has sent panic waves among hundreds of families living in border villages in these districts.

Four civilians were killed and more than a dozen others injured during this period because of shelling of civilian areas in Krishna Ghati, Hamirpur, Bhimber, Balakot and other areas near the LoC.

Three-year-old gunned down in Valley - The Hindu
A three-year-old boy on Saturday became the youngest-ever victim of ‘unidentified gunmen,’ a term used for armed men neither identified by the police nor by militant groups, as mysterious killings claimed two more lives in the Kasmir Valley.

Ghulam Muhammad Bhat (38) and his three-year-old son Burhan Bashir received bullets wounds when unidentified gunmen hurled a grenade and opened indiscriminate firing at them in north Kashmir’s Segipora village in Sopore, 55 km from Srinagar, on Friday evening.

Bhat, who was carrying his son, died on the spot. Burhan was rushed to Srinagar’s SKIMS Hospital, where he died on Saturday morning.

Police, without identifying the gunmen, said, “Assailants fired a grenade first but it did not explode. A volley of bullets was fired, causing grave injures to the duo.” Bhat was an ex-member of the militant outfit Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen.

A dastardly act: Mufti

Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed termed the boy’s killing a ‘dastardly act’. “My heart goes out to the boy’s mother, for whom the it will be an earth-shattering experience,” said Sayeed.

Meanwhile, Syed Ali Geelani, who heads a faction of the Hurriyat, has called for a shutdown against the killings. “The killing of Burhan is barbaric. It has shaken conscience of every human being,” said Mr. Geelani’s spokesman in a statement.

Just hours after the father-son duo was attacked, the body of a Hizbul Mujahideen militant was recovered from a field of Devbugh village of Tangmarg, 40 km from Srinagar. Identified as Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Wayil, Pattan area, the killing sparked violent protests. Several parts of north Kashmir witnessed a shutdown with shopkeepers closing down shops.

Talking to a Srinagar-based wire service, a Hizb spokesman said, “Bhat one of our militant commanders. He was along with his associates was on a mission when Indian Army personnel fired upon them. There was an Army ambush and Fayaz lost his life during the brief gunfight. However, his other associates managed to escape from the spot.”

Bhat, according to the Hizb spokesman, was an active member of the ‘Burhanuddin Sarhadi Squad’ and had participated in various operations in border areas.

The latest killings of father-son duo came days after three bodies of the Hizbul Mujahideen militants were recovered from the Pattan area on September 14. It remains a mystery who killed the militants.

Earlier, police said the killings were a result of internal rivalry within the Hizbul Mujahideen factions. However, Hizb supremo Syed Salahuddin claimed that the boys killed were of his outfit and were killed allegedly in custody by security forces.

The killings were followed by a separatist-sponsored shutdown across the Valley and also sparked violent clashes between security forces and protesters.

North Kashmir has been witnessing a spree of mysterious attacks and killings since May. Six persons, mainly separatist supporters, were killed in attacks, in Sopore. A wave of violent campaign was also launched against cellular services.

JKLF chairperson Muhammad Yasin Malik will sit on a token hunger strike on September 22 against the ‘barbaric and mysterious’ killings.

India, Pak armies agree to follow tenets of 2003 ceasefire agreement in 'letter and spirit' | Zee News

Nagrota: Asserting that India and Pakistan Armies have expressed concern over the safety and security of civilians who become target of the fire from both sides, a senior Army officer Tuesday said both the sides have agreed to follow the tenets of 2003 ceasefire agreement in letter and spirit.

"Various mechanisms will be set in place for maintaining peace and tranquility (along LoC in J&K). Both sides agreed to a lot of things and agreed to further continue this process so that the LoC can remain tranquil and we (India and Pak) follow the tenets of 2003 ceasefire (agreement)", General Officer Commanding (GoC) 16 corps Lt Gen R R Nimbhorkar told reporters on the sidelines of a function today.

He was replying to a volley of questions about the outcome of yesterday's brigade commander's Flag Meeting in Poonch.

The GoC maintained that both sides expressed concern over the safety and security of the civilians who 'inadvertently' become target of firing and shelling from both sides.

"Yes, there should be concern for the people of the country. There should be concern on both the sides. Yes there was concern on both the sides (expressed by officers of Pakistan and India at yesterday's flag meeting). And this concern was the main reason that both sides went for the negotiations," Nimbhorkar said.

Army officer said that the main aim of the flag meeting was to sit down together and resolve the issues (ceasefire violations), which are happening between the two sides.

"We didn't go (to flag meeting) with the aim of conveying any strong message. Basically, it is to sort out the differences for the conceptions or misconceptions which are happening. Therefore, we had a Flag Meeting yesterday which was in a cordial manner," he said.

On the outcome of talks, he said that it was good and in the interest of both the sides.

"Our aim was basically to maintain peace and tranquility and along with this major thing was that the civilians on both the sides should not suffer. We also have casualties and they too have casualties in this firing, so these people should not suffer," he added.

"Our aim gets fulfilled if we maintain peace and tranquility," he added.

As far as modus operandi of various terror outfits are concerned, it is well known, he said, adding, "We have to make sure that peace and tranquility is given a chance and we should work towards that."

Pakistan, not India, violating ceasefire along LoC, says ex-Pak envoy | Zee News

Washington: Pakistan`s former envoy to the United States Husain Haqqani on Monday said Islamabad claims that India is violating ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC), but evidences suggest that "all attempts to penetrate the LoC have originated from the Pakistani side".

"I think the Pakistani side claims that India is violating the ceasefire, but evidences suggest that all attempts to infiltrate the LoC have almost always emanated from the Pakistani side," Haqqani told ANI.

He stressed that Pakistan wants to change the status quo in Kashmir, but as far as India is concerned, she is happy with it.

"I do not think that any number of ceasefire violations is going to change the status quo. If Kargil couldn`t change the status quo, if the 1965 Operation Gibraltar couldn`t change the status quo, what will be achieved now? All we will see is a little more violence and incidents of terrorism that will not serve India, Pakistan or Kashmiris well," he added.

"The Azad Kashmir resident Mohammad Aslam Malik, who was detained yesterday for carrying Jihadi material, was today deported to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir through Chakan-Da-Bagh crossing point in Poonch district," a senior police officer told PTI.

He said that no case was registered against Malik as he was not indulged in any anti-India activity.
