Dirk Nannes and Australia's debutant Steve O'Keefe picked up three wickets each as Pakistan fell just short of their winning total from Monday, reaching 162 for 9 in the second Twenty20 at Edgbaston. There were cameos from Kamran Akmal and his brother Umar, Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Aamer, but Australia kept breaking partnerships to slow Pakistan's progress.
A late 21 not out from Aamer was especially valuable and included a pair of sixes off O'Keefe and David Hussey, but the spinners bowled well overall. O'Keefe's figures improved in his final over when he bowled the tailenders Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul to finish with 3 for 29, an impressive return for a man who hadn't played a Twenty20 for his state for nearly 18 months.
The total could have been much greater had Shahid Afridi and Umar Akmal stayed at the crease; their 30-run stand included one monstrous six from Afridi, who slapped Shaun Tait straight back over the bowler's head. The ball cleared the construction area, put a cameraman at risk, and exited the stadium to the roars of the Pakistan fans.
But Nannes changed the game when he collected them both in consecutive balls in the 17th over. Umar (25) was caught and bowled when his top edge flew so high that almost any member of the infield could have run in and claimed it, before Afridi edged behind for 18 next ball.
The most valuable partnership was that of Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal, whose 61-run stand was ended O'Keefe. The left-arm spinner O'Keefe struck in his first over when Butt top-edged a sweep and was caught at short fine leg for 31
Kamran followed soon afterwards for 33 when he skied a pull off Mitchell Johnson and was caught by Michael Clarke running back at midwicket. Shoaib Malik (12) was another who was caught trying to clear the infield; his pull off Dirk Nannes lobbed straight into the hands of the mid-on O'Keefe, who came in with James Hopes as Australia rested Steven Smith and Shane Watson.
If Pakistan were surprised by the selection of O'Keefe, they must have been even more taken aback at Michael Clarke's choice of opening bowler. David Hussey sent down the first over - the first time Australia had opened with a spinner in a Twenty20 international - and it was a triumph, a wicket-maiden that included Shahzaib Hasan lbw trying to slog-sweep.
