Pakistan to play host on New Zealand turf

Dunedin: New Zealand stepped forward to give their grounds to Pakistan to allow them to ‘host’ a three-match Test series. Pakistan, who were forced to shift their games out of the country due to persistent security issues, will play as the ‘home team’ on the Kiwi-land in their series against the Black Caps starting on November 24.

It will be the first time for New Zealand that they will host six Tests in a summer, counting the series against Pakistan, Bangladesh and Australia for 2009-10.

The heavy schedule prompted Australia to cut their tour to just two Test matches, rather than three.

The first match against Pakistan will be played in Dunedin, after which, the series will move to Wellington and Napier in December. Then, after a good long Christmas break, the home team will move to play a series against Bangladesh starting February 3, which will include a Twenty20, three ODIs and a one-off Test in Hamilton.

The Australia series will feature two T20s, five ODIs for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy and two Tests. It will be for the first time in 20 years that New Zealand have hosted Australia for a series of fewer than three Tests.

The schedule, hereby, implies that the Australian and Kiwi players will not be able to be a part of the India Premier League’s third edition till March 31.

“Playing Test cricket in New Zealand after the cessation of daylight saving and deep into the second week of April is not realistic,” Justin Vaughan, the CEO of New Zealand Cricket, said. “Therefore our only option has been to limit the series to two Tests.”

“This is shaping up as a very exciting season for cricket fans - and a really busy one for the Black Caps. New Zealand has never before hosted more than five Tests in a season, so the six Test matches being played this summer is a tremendous programme.”
