KARACHI: Former captain Shahid Afridi decided to leave Pakistan Super League (PSL) team Karachi Kings after the franchise did not retain him for the next season.

Afridi shared the news on his twitter handle after PSL revealed the list of retained players earlier today.

He wrote, “Thank you to @KarachiKings for a lovely time. Time for a new chapter in my @thePSLt20 journey. Will be following the #PSLDraft2018!”

The owner of the franchise replied to Shahid’s tweet thanking him for his time in the team and wishing him best of luck for the future.

PSL has shared the draft for the retained players for the next season today and the players draft for PSL 2019 will be held in Islamabad on November 20.

All the six teams, including the former Multan Sultans and currently referred to as ‘The Sixth Team’ before its repackaged rights are sold by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after the November 20 player draft, announced their retentions.

Last year’s champions Islamabad United retained all three Platinum players in Luke Ronchi, Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf.

With Mohammad Hafeez going back into the draft, Peshawar Zalmi opted for the pace duo of Wahab Riaz and Hassan Ali in their Platinum roster. Zalmi will use their lone Platinum pick at the Draft to pick a foreign player while seasoned wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal moves to the Diamond roster as Player Ambassador.

Sunil Narine, who moved from Lahore Qalandars to Quetta Gladiators as part of a blockbuster trade, joins Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed to complete Quetta’s Platinum retentions. Star Australian all-rounder Shane Watson moves to Diamond as Player Mentor.

The Sixth Team’s retentions include star Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik in Platinum and left-arm pacer Mohammad Irfan in Diamond as Player Ambassador.

Lahore Qalandars, who have the first pick at this season’s draft, retained opening batsman Fakhar Zaman as their only Platinum player while leg-spinner Yasir Shah was retained in Diamond.

Fast-rising pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, appointed Lahore Qalandar Ambassador, drops down to Silver. And this means Lahore will go the Draft with four Silver players namely Shaheen, Sohail Akhtar, Hassan Khan and Agha Salman.

Since the Qalandars have already traded their second round Silver pick with the Gladiators, they have given up their first round Silver pick as a result of this move.

Retentions:
ISLAMABAD UNITED: Faheem Ashraf, Luke Ronchi, Shadab Khan (all Platinum), Mohammad Sami, Asif Ali (both Diamond), Rumman Raees (Gold; relegation request successful), Sahibzada Farhan, Zafar Gohar, Waqas Maqsood, Hussain Talat (all silver; Hussain named ambassador).

PESHAWAR ZALMI: Wahab Riaz, Hassan Ali (both Platinum), Kamran Akmal, Darren Sammy (both Diamond, Kamran named ambassador), Liam Dawson (Gold), Umaid Asif, Khalid Usman (both Silver), Sameen Gul (Emerging). KARACHI KINGS: Babar Azam, Mohammad Amir, Colin Munro (all Platinum), Colin Ingram, Imad Wasim, Usman Khan Shinwari (all Diamond, Ingram named ambassador), Ravi Bopara, Mohammad Rizwan (both Gold).

QUETTA GLADIATORS: Sarfaraz Ahmed, Sunil Narine (both Platinum), Shane Watson, Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Nawaz (all Diamond, Watson named mentor), Rilee Roussow, Umar Akmal (both Gold, Roussow named ambassador), Anwar Ali, Saud Shakeel (both Silver).

LAHORE QALANDARS: Fakhar Zaman (Platinum), Yasir Shah (Diamond), Anton Devcich, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Rahat Ali (all Gold), Agha Salman, Sohail Akhtar, Hassan Khan (all Silver).

SIXTH TEAM: Shoaib Malik (Platinum), Mohammad Irfan, Junaid Khan (both Diamond, Irfan named ambassador), Shan Masood (Gold), Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Irfan Khan, Umar Siddiq (all Silver), Mohammad Junaid (Emerging).

A Pakistan full of talent: 6 impressive players who rightly deserve a spot in PSL 2019

72225-psljpg-1542270563-186-640x480.jpg

Throughout the three seasons of PSL thus far, many talented cricketers have been left out.

I was always envious of the Indian Premier League (IPL); I loved the fact that it projected young Indian talent to the world, and I wanted something similar for Pakistan. Enters Pakistan Super League (PSL).

However, while PSL has brought numerous young talent, I also feel that throughout the three seasons thus far, many talented cricketers have been left out.

In this blog, I focus on the top six talents PSL teams should pick in the upcoming draft, and why I believe they would be a good fit for the team.

Saif Badar

A product of the Under-19 (U19) system, Badar, so far in his young career, has been mistreated. Whilst he has been given opportunities, most of them have come in a hopeless scenario. In domestic cricket back in Pakistan, he is often sent in to bat at number seven, and he hardly ever has a fixed position in the playing XI. It was a similar case last year where he was selected by the Multan Sultans, but hardly got a chance to bat. He would either be too low in the order for him to not bat, or he would come in with only a few balls remaining.

Badar is a top order batsman, and this is where he has had most of his success. This is therefore exactly where he should bat if you want to get the most out of him.

Of late, the 20-year-old from Sialkot has been in great form, registering back-to-back 50s in list-A games. What makes the 50s most impressive is the context in which they were played in. They were both match-winning, and both came whilst chasing, showing that the kid has a calm head on his shoulders.

If a franchise wants an aggressive top to middle order batsman, Badar is your man.

Zeeshan Malik

You cannot speak about ‘best young upcoming batsmen in Pakistan’ and then leave this guy out. Malik is a fantastic young aggressive opening batsman who could have a bright future. Like others, he wasn’t given much of a chance to perform, however, this season for Rawalpindi, he has grasped whatever opportunity he has been given and made it count, scoring three centuries in only four games. The centuries he scored were all registered at a good strike rate, showing he has the ability to play all formats.

The best thing about Malik is that once he is set, he often goes on to score big hundreds. This is a quality which franchises should look at. It is imperative they select him, as he could do wonders for the team.

Mukhtar Ahmed

PSL has had three seasons so far and and Mukhtar has only played a single game. This sums up how much talent is wasted in Pakistan. If you go by statistics, Mukhtar is probably the best T20 batsman in Pakistan, having scored three centuries in the format.

Mukhtar is known for his explosiveness at the top of the order. He isn’t the most technical, but he gets the job done, and he scores big and fast at the same time.

I find it ridiculous how we have the likes of Asad Shafiq and Khurram Manzoor opening the batting in the PSL while Mukhtar is sitting at home.

He has a strike rate of 152 in the format; it is criminal how he has not been put to good use thus far.

Hasan Mohsin

Yet again Mohsin is another wasted talented. He has been part of the Karachi Kings squad for the past two seasons, yet hasn’t played a single game, despite being one of the most talented upcoming cricketers in Pakistan, which was displayed during the 2016 U19 World Cup.

Recently, Mohsin was given the captaincy armband in the Quaid-e-Azam One-Day Cup. Here he impressed one and all, scoring a 58 followed by a match-winning 103 off only 70 deliveries. This inning showed he has the ability to score at a fast rate, a necessity in the T20 format. In the aforementioned inning, he showed an unbelievable array of strokes. His improvising was amazing where he played numerous ramp shots as well as scoops.

Mohsin was initially touted as an all-rounder; however, I feel it is best if he is selected solely as a batsman. I don’t feel his bowling is good enough to warrant the tag of an all-rounder.

If teams are looking for an aggressive middle to late order batsman, Mohsin is definitely the guy.

Shahzaib Ahmed

I have a bit of confidence that the people I have named so far will be selected by some franchise, but l highly doubt that Shahzaib will. A few years ago, Shahzaib was one of the most impressive upcoming spinners in Pakistan, yet has fallen off through no fault of his own.

Once again it is that key word in Pakistani cricket: opportunity.

Shahzaib has had very little opportunity, which has hindered his career deeply. Despite the setbacks, he still boasts impressive numbers in all three formats, averaging under 30. Shahzaib’s biggest strength is his googly, which bamboozles most who face him. I witnessed this first-hand when I travelled to Birmingham with Shahzaib. The Pakistani Test team, on the eve of their Test against England at Edgbaston, invited Shahzaib to bowl for the team. I remember him bowling to both Asad Shafiq and Shan Masood, who struggled against his leg-spin.

If you take a look at the T20 rankings, nine out of the 10 bowlers are spinners, and most are leg-spinners. I feel not selecting Shahzaib would be a huge blunder. He can win matches and is someone who would give his best to the franchise.

Danish Aziz

I watched Aziz take on Saeed Ajmal a few years ago, and absolutely take him apart. From then on I knew he was a cricketer with buckets of talent. He has continued to display this talent, mainly in pressure games. In tournament finals, I’ve seen him play substantial innings to win his team the game twice. This shows he is a player who can perform under pressure.

Aziz is an aggressive middle to late order batsman, with the ability to bowl very handy left arm spin. In the T20 format, he averages a very impressive 40 with the bat at a healthy strike rate of 124.

Overall, it is clear to see the abundance of cricketing talent in Pakistan, but often the talent is wasted. The aforementioned names are not the only ones with immense talent as there are many others who have the ability to pack the same punch and deserve to play in the tournament. These include: Shan Masood, Mohammad Abbas, Bilal Asif, Aamer Yamin, Nasir Nawaz, Hammad Azam, Afraz Khoso, Atif Jabbar and many others.

I sincerely hope that the players I mentioned get a chance to play in the PSL. It seems as if this is the only route for players to get selected in the national team, and these players certainly deserve a shot. With the amount of talent not selected, it makes you wonder, do we need a seventh team in the PSL?

Yes definitely although PSL has yielded a lot of our current superstars (Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Faheem Ashraf and Shadab Khan were all discovered through PSL) there was a lot of missed opportunities as well. The whole point of PSL is to introduce young players who never get to play international cricket to playing with the big boys from across the world, yet for some reason the franchises are still latching on the old has-beens like Misbah and Afridi and giving them priority playing time over the raw talent.

Seriously Misbah pissed me off last year when he was captain of Islamabad, he has a very good potential all rounder in Hussain Talat that could become the next Abdul Razzaq for our team yet during every game of PSL he was given very little opportunity to bat and bowl up the order so that he could rely on JP Duminy to win the game instead, I mean yes winning should be the goal but not at expense of lack of exposure to good domestic players. And seriously the old has-beens should not take part in PSL anymore and give exposure to new players if they really care about the future of Pak cricket.

The emerging players category needs to be revised as in almost all seasons emerging players are almost same i.e Hssan Khan, Sameen Gull etc and even many not being used effectively, Pak can't get any thing better from tournament in this manner.

Prior to the drafting, the PCB chairman Ehsan Mani claimed receiving overwhelming response for the vacant sixth team ownership. “We are going ahead with the team panel to select the best possible players from each category for the Sixth outfit. As all the process has to complete according to laid down schedule, the Draft would go ahead as plan.”

Ehsan Mani said over ten strong parties have so far approached him to buy the rights of available sixth team. Multan Sultan team ownership went open following a recent understanding between former owners and PSL administrators. “We cannot wait for the completion of all the formalities before holding draft. It is a time consuming job as we have to go through the entire process afresh.” The PCB has already threw the dice open for investors to buy sixth team ownership. “It could well take another month or so before we would be in a position to know as who owns the franchise.”

The PCB chairman also hinted at giving joint ownership to interested parties for the 2019 edition of PSL if parties fail to meet the required demand.

“It is a possibility. Though we haven’t yet set the benchmark as the minimum prize to wrest the ownership, there is a possibility that if we fail to get the minimum amount we may well decide to dole out joint rights for the 2019 edition and then leave everything for the next season. First thing first-we are expecting parties to meet our offer and it is very likely we would get that. The initial response is overwhelming,” Ehsan Mani claimed. The PCB chairman said that whatever the sixth team panel would pick from the Players Draft, the new owners will have to go with it. “Obviously, the panel would go for the best for sixth team and as such their decision would be final. It would be part of new contract we are to sign with owners/owner in due course.” The selection for the Sixth Team at the HBL PSL Player Draft 2018 will be conducted by a panel comprising essential staff of the team.

The panel, headed by team manager Nadeem Khan, includes Nadeem Khan (team manager as head of panel), Shoaib Malik, (captain), Faisal Mirza (consultant).

The sixth team has already retained Shoaib Malik and Keirn Pollard (Platinum), Kumar Sangakkara and Sohail Tanir (Diamond), M Irfan and Junaid Khan (Gold) and Kashif Bhatti, Sohaib Maqsood and Irfan Khan (Silver).

PCB chief hopes all PSL fixtures will take place in Pakistan in two to three years

396376_2707824_PCB-Ehsan-Mani_updates.jpg

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ehsan Mani on Tuesday expressed the hope that all Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches would take place in the country during the next two to three years.

“It is a matter of confidence of (foreign) players. I hope this (confidence) will rise with the passage of time and all PSL fixtures will take place in Pakistan in the next two to three years,” he told media ahead of PSL drafting here at a local hotel.

Mani said that eight matches of the fourth edition of PSL would take place in Pakistan, adding that in the fifth edition the number of matches taking place in the country would be even higher.

To another question as when would PSL matches start taking place in Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, he said that the fifth edition of PSL would also bring a happy news for the cricket fans of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

He said that PSL had become a big brand and adding that franchises and sponsors had played a big role for that.

PCB chief said that talks were underway with some countries to persuade them send their teams to Pakistan.

He said that PSL had played a big role in bringing foreign players to Pakistan.

Teams finalised after Player Draft

396401_592869_PSLDraft2018_updates.jpg

ISLAMABAD: All six teams have been finalised at the PSL Player Draft for the fourth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) held here on Tuesday.

Lahore Qalandars picked former South Africa captain AB de Villiers and former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez while former captain of two-time champions Islamabad United Misbah-ul-Haq was picked by Peshawar Zalmi.

The Sixth Team, formerly known as Multan Sultans, picked Shahid Afridi, who previously represented Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi, and Australian batsman Steve Smith.

The Sixth Team was formed in place of Multan Sultans, whose ownership rights were terminated by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after the franchise failed to pay the annual fee of US $5.2 million.

The team replacing Multan Sultans is now referred to as the ‘Sixth Team’ pending further update.

Other five franchises are Islamabad United, Peshawar Zalmi, Quetta Gladiators, Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars.

All six teams picked players from 663 foreign and local players, available in the Draft.

Following is the list of the finalized teams:
