Islamabad United's Colin Munro looks on after playing a shot against Quetta Gladiators.

KARACHI: Several records were made when Islamabad United thrashed Quetta Gladiators on Friday in match 18 of the sixth edition of the Pakistan Super League.

New Zealand’s Colin Munro was in his supreme form when he scored 90 runs and handed his team a comprehensive victory against the struggling Qalandars.

United became the first team in the PSL to win a match with 10 overs remaining in their innings.

Being set a target of 134 by Quetta Gladiators in match 18 of PSL 2021, the Shadab Khan-led United outclassed its opponent and reached the target without any loss on the last ball of the 10th over of their innings.

This win, with 60 balls remaining in the 2nd innings, is the biggest in the history of PSL in terms of balls remaining in the innings for the batting side when they reached the target.

The previous record was with Peshawar Zalmi when it reached a target of 79 against Lahore Qalandars in 2019 in 10.1 overs, with 59 balls remaining in the innings.

This is only the third time a team reached a target without losing a wicket in a PSL match. Two others are Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings, both had defeated Lahore Qalandars by 10 wickets, in 2018 and 2020 respectively.
United’s Colin Munro smashed 90* off 36 balls with a strike rate of 250.00 in the match which is the highest strike rate of any batsman scoring at least 80 runs in a PSL inning.
The previous highest was by Qalandars’ Ben Dunk who scored 99* off 40 with a strike rate of 247.50 against Karachi Kings in 2020.

PSL 2021: Which teams are likely to make it to the play-offs?

KARACHI: Lahore Qalandars, who were at one time looked set to cruise into the play-off stage, are now at the brink of elimination from the Pakistan Super League’s sixth edition after four consecutive defeats.

The Qalandars have now pinned their hopes on Quetta Gladiators' win against Karachi Kings tonight to proceed to the next stage.

The Sohail Akhtar-led side finished the league stage with 10 points in 10 matches after winning five and losing five games and have an abysmal net run rate (NRR) of -0.589.

Two other teams are on the table with 10 points as well. Peshawar Zalmi has completed its quota of league matches and earned 10 points with an NRR of 0.586. The Multan Sultans have an NRR of 1.192 and are scheduled to play their last league match against Islamabad United tonight.

Logically, Multan with a mammoth NRR looks certain to qualify, yet mathematically, confirmation is awaited. The only way they could be eliminated is if Islamabad beats them by as big a margin as 300+ runs – which seems impossible in cricketing logic.

Karachi has eight points in nine games and has an NRR of -0.212. If they manage to beat Quetta Gladiators, they’ll also jump to 10 points on the table.

With the Kings already sporting a better NRR than the Qalandars, a win against Gladiators will get them to the play-offs and the Qalandars will be eliminated along with the Quetta Gladiators.
If the Quetta Gladiators beat Karachi Kings, the Lahore Qalandars will join Islamabad, Multan and Peshawar in the play-off stage as the fourth-placed team on the table.
