How do drafts usually take place?

Drafts can be tricky for people who are watching them for the first time. They can even be tricky for the team management. Hence, they hire people specially so that they can guide them about the draft rules each year.
But you won’t have to hire anybody, we are here with you! Here’s a short guide about how these drafts usually take place each year. Consider these basics.

  • Firstly, each team announces their retentions from the previous years. These players will not be a part of the draft. However, teams have to drop some players that are made available for the picks in the upcoming draft.
  • Then, PCB announces the players list and their categories. They also announce pick orders before the drafts. Teams plan their picks for the drafts accordingly.
  • For each category, there can be multiple rounds. As per the pick order, the teams choose their players.
  • TWIST: Teams also have limited options to revoke any team’s pick if that player was in their franchise last year. This happens when that franchise had dropped that player, but was planning to re-pick them. However, this can cost them their turn for the round.
  • Teams can also trade their pick orders if they trade players with each other before the drafts.

HBL PSL planned for expansion with hefty price tags for new teams in 2026

The PCB is preparing to revise franchise fees, allowing existing team owners to either retain their rights or opt out.

HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set to expand in 2026, with two new teams expected to fetch between $7 million and $10 million each, as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) seeks to capitalise on the league's growing value, Express News reported on Sunday.

The league currently comprises six franchises under a 10-year agreement, which is set for renewal after the upcoming 10th season.

The PCB is preparing to revise franchise fees, allowing existing team owners to either retain their rights or opt out. However, all current franchises have indicated their intent to continue.

To determine the revised franchise fees, an independent audit firm will assess the league’s valuation. The PCB had previously fixed the exchange rate at Rs170 per dollar for team payments, but with the rupee depreciating to Rs282 per dollar, a significant fee adjustment is expected.

Multan Sultans, the most expensive team, currently pays Rs1.08 billion ($6.3 million) annually, while other franchises were sold at varying rates, ranging from $1.1 million to $2.6 million. With the addition of two new teams, the PCB anticipates selling each for up to Rs 2.5 billion ($10 million).

Several entities have shown interest in acquiring a franchise, including a major corporate player in Pakistan and a Grade Two cricket institution. Additionally, PCB officials recently met potential investors in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Despite the excitement surrounding expansion, existing franchise owners fear a reduction in their central revenue share. Currently, all teams receive an equal share from the league’s central revenue pool, regardless of their franchise fees.
The PCB, however, has assured them that upcoming sponsorship and broadcasting deals will increase overall revenues.

Some analysts question the financial viability of new franchises, citing past struggles faced by team owners. Multan Sultans, for example, incurred heavy losses despite paying a relatively lower fee.

In 2018, its previous owner, Schon Group, backed out due to financial difficulties. Experts suggest that the PCB should prioritise financially robust buyers to avoid similar issues.

With growing investor interest and a lucrative broadcasting market, the PCB aims to finalise the expansion process well before the 11th PSL season in 2026.

HBL Pakistan Super League made history with a spectacular unveiling of its landmark 10th edition trophy, Luminara, in Karachi's coastal waters on Thursday evening.

This unprecedented move marks a new milestone in the league's legacy, symbolising innovation, resilience, brilliance, and the spirit of Pakistan's premier T20 competition.

The unveiling was conducted in the open waters of the Arabian Sea, where a professional diver recovered a treasure chest from the deep sea with the support of the Pakistan Navy and handed over the prized trophy to HBL PSL stakeholders present in Karachi.

The narrative signifies a breathtaking display symbolising the league's depth, evolution, and unwavering spirit. This unique spectacle was witnessed by HBL and PCB officials, franchise representatives, and cricketers further amplifying the excitement leading up to HBL PSL X.

Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi said on the occasion, "The unveiling of 'Luminara' at sea is a testament to the league's commitment to innovation and excellence. As we celebrate a decade of HBL PSL, this trophy represents the league's shining legacy and its bright future."

The 10th edition of HBL PSL is set to take place in four cities – Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi from 11 April to 18 May. The opening match will be played between the defending champions Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Meanwhile, the first-ever trophy tour in the history of HBL PSL will commence today from Hyderabad and Karachi, with 'Luminara' scheduled to travel to 11 cities across Pakistan till 29 March, the PCB announced today.

The Luminara trophy will be displayed at various locations across Karachi and Hyderabad in the first leg of its tour on March 14 and 15 before heading to Lahore, where it will stay until March 17.

The trophy will then make a one-day visit to Multan, Bahawalpur and Faisalabad on March 18, 19 and 20 respectively before touring Peshawar on March 22.

The first leg of the historic trophy tour will eventually conclude on March 23, with Luminara making a stop at the capital city, Islamabad.

PSL could feature two additional teams from next edition

The 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), scheduled for next year, may expand to include eight teams, according to tournament COO Salman Naseer.

The PSL, Pakistan's premier T20 league, was first launched in 2016 with five teams: Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi, and Quetta Gladiators. In 2018, the league grew to six teams with the addition of Multan Sultans.

Since then, the PSL has been played with six teams, though discussions about expanding the league have surfaced periodically. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had previously announced that the 10th edition of the tournament, set for this year, would be the last to feature six teams, with two new teams expected in the 2026 edition.

However, the latest development indicates that the league could introduce two more teams sooner. Salman Naseer, who became the COO of PSL in November 2024, provided an update on the league's expansion. He mentioned that the addition of two more teams could take place as early as the end of this year.

"By the end of this year, we might get two more teams," Naseer told local media on Thursday.

He explained that the PSL's journey began when cricket was largely absent from Pakistan, and the challenge was to bring it back. With cricket now successfully restored to traditional centers, Naseer emphasized that the next step was to expand beyond the current cities of Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Multan.

The PSL, typically held during the February-March window, now faces tough competition from other T20 leagues such as South Africa's SA20 and the UAE's International League T20, both influenced by the financially powerful Indian Premier League (IPL).

"This year will be an interesting test, and with more teams, we anticipate a bigger window," Naseer added.

"Some of our rights are up for valuation after this PSL. A lot will depend on the data we gather," he concluded.

Saim Ayub’s HBL PSL 2025 return hinges on key medical test on Tuesday

Saim Ayub’s return remains a concern for Peshawar Zalmi and Pakistan as his medical assessment will decide timeline.

Pakistan opener Saim Ayub continues rehabilitation from an ankle injury sustained during the Cape Town Test against South Africa in January.

However, his participation in the upcoming HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) will depend on a detailed medical assessment on Tuesday. The assessment will determine whether the 22-year-old will be fit in time for the tournament, set to begin on April 11.

Medical assessment to determine PSL fate

Saim is currently undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of Pakistan cricket trainer Hanif Malik. The medical evaluation, involving British specialists, will play a crucial role in deciding his return to competitive cricket.

Saim, who was initially expected to recover within six weeks, missed the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and Pakistan’s white-ball tour of New Zealand as a precautionary measure.

PCB's official instagram has recently been posting Saim Ayub's training and rehabilitation videos.

This development comes after Phil Simons, who joined the team ahead of the ninth season, stepped down due to his commitments with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The former West Indian player has been offered a two-year contract by the BCB.

In his absence, Bopara, the previous assistant coach, has been elevated to the position of head coach. He will be joined by Muhammad Masroor as the assistant coach.

The Karachi-based franchise has overhauled its team management following a round-stage exit in the last three seasons.

Earlier this week, the Kings appointed former Australian opener David Warner as their new team leader.

Warner has long been regarded as one of the most dangerous T20 openers. He has captained top T20 teams over the past decade, including franchises in the Big Bash League.

Karachi Kings secured Warner as their first pick in the Platinum category during the PSL-10 Players Draft, held on January 13, 2025, at the historic Hazoori Bagh in Lahore.

Known for his tactical expertise and his ability to develop young talent, his appointment fits perfectly with the Qalandars’ goal of building a competitive and dynamic squad for the upcoming season.
