Pakistan suffered more than US in Iraq, Afghanistan
WASHINGTON: Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan said in an interview published here that the Pakistan Army had lost more soldiers than the US army in Iraq and Afghanistan put together. In an interview with Amy Goodman of Democracy Now, he said the sort of casualties the Pakistan Army was taking were unsustainable and were causing unrest in the ranks. Imran said, The US should back the people of Pakistan, if ever this war is going to be won, it will be won by mobilising the people and backing the democratic process, not a military dictator. He also called for the reinstatement of sacked judges. He said if former premier Benazir Bhutto had decided to boycott the elections that would have brought down the Musharraf government. By not doing so at the urging of the US, she actually gave President Musharraf a life line. Others followed because they feared they would be left out. About the US media, he said that here, people seemed to think that there was only one man who was fighting this war on terror, and he alone should be supported. If he went, the country would implode, and Pakistans nuclear weapons would fall into the hands of extremists. Imran said, The basic problem with the Muslim world is that it does not have democracy. And sadly, the reason always given is that we are not ready for democracy. He said the US should not have backed Benazir Bhutto, which was absolutely wrong. It amounts to interfering in the domestic politics of another country. Asked if Musharraf should resign, the PTI chief replied, He should have resigned a year back, but he certainly - if we want stability in Pakistan - must go. He is attracting terrorism. The people, who were not terrorists before, because of him, are now picking up the gun, because theyre losing faith in the democratic process.
