Pakistan should have known bin Laden was there: Afghanistan

Pakistan’s spy agency should have known Osama bin Laden was hiding not far from its capital, Afghanistan’s Defence Ministry said on Wednesday, the first direct comment from Kabul about its neighbour’s apparent inability to track the al Qaeda leader.

Defence Ministry spokesman Zaher Azimy said the case also raised questions about Pakistan’s ability to adequately protect its nuclear weapons.

Bin Laden, architect of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, was killed by a U.S. strike team in a military garrison town about 60 km north of Islamabad on Monday.

US lawmakers have demanded a review of aid to Pakistan after the disclosure that bin Laden could have been living in the house, which is not far from Pakistan’s main military academy, for five or six years.

“When we talk about the location of the house and a military academy nearby … at the very least it should be known about the activities inside the house and who is living there,” Azimy told a news conference.

“If Pakistan’s spy agency was not aware of the house near the academy, it brings the agency under question. If I was a security analyst, I would raise these very important questions.”

Pakistan’s powerful Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) spy agency and the army have been conspicuously silent about the raid, which has raised questions about whether they knew all along where bin Laden has been hiding.

The ISI has also been accused of maintaining ties with fighters targeting US troops across the border in Afghanistan.

Kabul and Islamabad have long had a difficult relationship.

Azimy said the killing of bin Laden also raised broader questions about the ISI and the Pakistan military, including its ability to safeguard its nuclear arsenal.

“If the agency was not aware that the biggest terrorist had been living there for six long years, how can it protect its strategic weapons?” he said.

“How can the world be assured that the strategic and atomic weapons would not be in danger in the future?”

Afghan President Hamid Karzai was far less direct in his first comments about bin Laden’s killing on Monday, saying that it proved the global fight against militants was “not in Afghan villages”.

the afgans should just shut up their dirty mouths....first they fight with the ruskies...then amongst themselves...then the US comes in....we know how to handle our nukes...you just handle your own country mate.

where OBL was killed, the same house was raided in2010 and some taliban were caught, obl was really stupid IF he was hiding there....yea i know doesnt makes sence

their own pilot kills 8 people at their own base...they should just shut up

They are right, Pakistan should have known, but why the note to cast doubt on pakistans nukes?

This is not coming from India, us or israel, but our fellow Muslim neighbours, stop calling these people your brothers, they just think you are soft and ready to be exploited, take note.

I am not even going to bother replying to what Afghanistan says about our country.

Seriously, concocting conspiracy theories has become a our favorite hobby. Along with living in denial about our problems.

The US came in, did the job and left. No response from our military establishment to the airspace violation. Shows how safe our nuclear assets might be too. If the military was given notice.... WHY DON'T THEY MAN UP AND ACCEPT THAT. Is the govt and military really that concerned about backlash for helping the US catch someone like Osama??

Everyone is moving ahead and we are still in a state of denial.

can you back it with some official or media statement ?

Yes Pakistan perhaps knew and did inform US

Pakistan alerted US about compound in 2009: Bashir

LONDON: Pakistan alerted the US to its suspicions about a compound where Osama bin Laden was found hiding as far back as 2009, Pakistani Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir said on Wednesday.

Bashir also hit out at “disquieting” comments by CIA Director Leon Panetta that US officials had ruled out informing Islamabad in advance about Sunday’s US raid on the Pakistani compound which led to the al Qaeda chief’s death.

Asked in a BBC radio interview about the compound in Abbottabad where the al Qaeda chief was discovered, Bashir said: “This particular location was pointed out by our intelligence quite some time ago to the US intelligence.

“Of course they have a much more sophisticated equipment to evaluate and to assess.”

“We had indicated this compound as far back as 2009 as a possible place,” Bashir added, although he added it was not known at the time bin Laden was hiding there and there were “millions” of other suspect locations.

On Panetta’s comments, the Pakistani official said: “I know for sure that we have extended every cooperation to the US including the CIA as well as to other countries so far as the campaign against terror is concerned.

“In terms of success in what is called global anti-terror, Pakistan has played a pivotal role so it is a little disquieting when we hear comments like this.”

On the decision not to inform Pakistan about the raid, Panetta told Time magazine that “it was decided that any effort to work with the Pakistanis could jeopardise the mission: They might alert the targets.”

Look who is talking. First 'help' the Afghans fight the Ruskis on US assistant, now hoping for friendship with the same Ruskis to annoy the US. Clean up your own dirty mind first, then advice others to.

Stop ranting Watani, you think I'm going to let you get away with nonsense? :police:

Fighting the Soviet Union had the backing of the Afghanistan populace, so clean your hypocritical mindset first.
Secondly, Pakistan getting friendly with Russia needs to be taken with a different understanding because the situation is with a different context.
Thridly, Russia is not yesterday's Soviet Union who invaded Afghanistan. Soviet Union was looked upon as an aggressor.

So stop barking and shut your trap.

We don't need "moral or "ethical" advice from an LDC (Least developed country) which is the world's largest producer of illicit opium or drugs.

OBL personally called in the navy seals with directions to his house in Pakistan , so stop bickering about whether your nukes and country is safe from US invasion. If you lived with 3 wives in one house for 5 years where you couldn't leave the house at any time, wouldn't you become suicidal as well ?? :D

Well If the PA knew about the compound why didnt they raid them directly? Instead of informing uS?

Well, well Donald Rumsfeld has given a very good defense of the Pakistani Military and explained how easy it is for a fugitive to hid in plain site, if that person goes off the grid.

Plz get over this bin laden thing!!! he died yrs ago n thats that..
