Pakistan proposes curbs on raucous media - The Washington Post

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Media censorship is nothing new in Pakistan, where military dictators come and go. But newly proposed rules to ban TV programming deemed “against the national interest” spring from an unlikely source: a civilian government that has prided itself on inching the country toward democracy over the past four years.

The proposals were issued last week by a media regulatory body that says it is responding to public complaints about an explosion of increasingly shrill, fact-twisting and privacy-invading cable news shows. But the draft measures also take pointed aim at coverage that criticizes “the organs of the state” or undermines Pakistan’s “solidarity as an independent and sovereign country.”

i agree.....private channels should behave.......owners of these private channels are using these channels for their own petty aspirations and gains

Its actually sad that Pakistan instead of being more progressive is moving towards being a theocracy (as if being a Kleptocracy wasn't enough). Its even more deplorable that the people of Pakistan ( not the free speech organizations) are silent about this. The curbing of ones basic rights is extremely despicable and shouldn't be taken laying down.

SOPA’s claimed primarily aim was and is enforcement to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods.

Which simply translates into suing, charging and blocking free content sharing. Initially content creators were not happy with other people making money from content sharing methods, like youtube channels getting sponsorships from many organizations where content is not the property of the channel owner.

Governments saw a chance of curbing exchange of ideas behind the cover of content protection. Thus came SOPA and PIPA

So the protest was against the real intent of SOPA under ‘content protection’ cover. Content and knowledge sharing should not be curbed if it is not a means for making money.

What Pakistan is doing according to these reports is all together different –what Pakistan is doing is simply Block online content (which is in my opinion wrong) in the name of morality, National security etc. it has nothing to do with so called ‘content protection’.

I disagree with the following statement in the Forbes piece. Which is more of a blog referring to NY Times article/report, and is not a established fact.

Free speech advocates in Pakistan are worried: not just for the usual reasons, but also because these sorts of broad attempts to restrict speech brings back memories of the more oppressive rule of Gen. Pervez Musharraf.

In my opinion Musharraf was the very first to allow free speech, allowing anti govt reporting analysis and media war. He established institutions and authorities to regularize media so that there is some sense to the method that too professionals and taking directions from elected persons. There hasn’t been any govt before Musharraf which gave such freedom to media. So much so that he himself had no option but to let media carryout a campaign of defaming him (Musharraf).

P.S. Dear OP what is the point of starting a thread if you don’t put out an introductory case. Just linking a blog with not even a single word or opinion of your own doesn’t serve any purpose.

@RayKalm

I am not sure what has obsessed you but you are spamming one liner threads that may already been posted by someone else or in this case your own self!!!

I have merged them for now but next time I will have to delete them.

And kindly try to be original and give your opening narrative instead of copy pasting someone's work over here.

I think criticism to the policies, and the running of the country is okay. But the criticism should be aimed at finding a solution, long term solutions for the problems. If we don't provide a solution it means people are just criticizing for political point scoring and garnering support which is not always right.

By the way there has been some mean censorship in the US media as well.

US censors somethings as well. Not that its a good thing. But I am just saying its not a good idea to demoralize the army when its fighting such an important war, because today the media is literally blaming them for everything.

We need to decide what is alright and what isn't. Some PMLN and PPP politicians just target the army. It makes you lose faith in your forces

Private channels or individuals doing programs in there are heavily funded by "outsiders" like just admitted by Hilarious Clinton,,, Keep "doing more" Ms. Hilarious Clinton, but in the end joke would be on you.

So I agree they should be reined & tamed,,,

Also in National politics, these anchors would take "gifts" from a party & run program full of their praises or against other party,,,
