Pakistan PM to take on foreign, defense portfolios himself sources

very clever move btw. no other way to keep the army under civilian watch.

I dont see how becoming somewhat Amir-ul-momineen will help him keep army under his watch, especially when he is elected through rigged elections by obvious forces behind him?

I knew he will keep foreign to himself because it is Maryam who will be next foreign minister guys and defense he should give to some one even if he mainly keeps it to himself but their should be a minister only by name but their should be @Leader @Aeronaut @WebMaster @nuclearpak and others

I dont understand why in a democratic setup one has to concentrate powers around his person, when clearly the constitution separates the positions,

if one cannot even find a single comrade to trust for important positions, then good luck to such a party !

bythe way I agree, foreign office is going to Maryam !!

Didn't Nawaz Sharif say that capable people on merit will be put up for the job, and Ahsan Iqbal would be the Minister for Power, so how come a LLB and a economist is going to get the job in Khwaja Asif?

The new era of democratic dictatorship begins

Isn't that what the people in Karachi been experiencing for decades???? Race based gangster politics with a gun aiming at you if you didn't comply.......??? and then a bag with a corpse would follow if you still didn't comply?? How could you say that with a murderer's picture in your signature? EVEN I KNOW THAT. And I've only been to Karachi for a week on a business trip.

You are mistaken on both counts. Its sad to see you guys doing propaganda vs. showing a ONE version of Pakistan. Too busy with sects, races and languages. Won't get too far in life, that's for sure. If y'll want to build a Pakistan with opportunity and prosperity.....you'll need to get over these discriminatory nature of your culture.
He's the PM, elected by the people. He has the right for five years to run the country however he likes to. If he doesn't deliver, the people of Pakistan should throw him out like they did to the PPP. But he has five years to run a democratic government.
Also, no constitution says that the defense minister is separate or must be separate. The cabinet run on the pleasure of the premier. To save money or better control, etc, Premier's can and have kept two roles or even more. Please don't lie or spread misinformation.
In our country, the generals, the head of all agencies serve at the pleasure of our president. Mr. Obama gets to pick the people he wants to use on key post and the elected people will server at the pleasure of the commander in chief. When he doesn't need them, they'll salute him and leave. Doesn't matter how happy or unhappy they felt. THAT's democracy. Generals and the militaries don't run countries. Civilians.....we or YOU the PEOPLE do!!! Never forget that. Here, Mr. Shariff has majority of the people backing him up and he has VERY clear mandate. He'll form whatever cabinet he needs to, to take Pakistan to the next level in trade, opportunity and in removing terrorism, religious intolerance, etc, etc and to normalize good relations with India and others. If he feels like he can handle it better. He doesn't have to hire anyone for it. He is the Premier!! So you guys should support your government and together build a better Pakistan. And wait for your tun next time for your guy. Not bash other through misinformation

Welcome to Roshan Pakistan, soon his younger brother will follow and will declare to keep 18 ministries in Punjab in addition to CM seat.. And they said they are not power hungry people..

.
If you guyz see NS body language. He is clearly more serious on the things this time. And He knew he will get these ministries, so he started foreign relation campaign, just after 11 May. Also, He already moved forward for the dialogues with TTP. But still his main priority is Power Crisis. And What I have seen, he can go upto any extent to resolve this issue.

It's time other upcoming Ministers should also show same type of dedication.

sorry bhaya he already said yesterday "Koi yeh na samjhay k hamari hukumat k atay hee bijli aa jaye gee" he said he will need 3 to four years to solve it. and i doubt if he can even then.

He is a balled emotional goon and he has started proving this by taking irrational decisions seems we are going to early elections but anyway thats an assumption

bear with him for 5 years, his NRO II by international guaranteers insured him majority.. apparently there is no way out of this trap except to wait for another 5 years.

lol, so you were expecting when he will come he will do some "Magic" and Power Crisis will be gone? This fairy Land concept is only in PTI.

There is no loadshadding, it is just man made. After sometime, no we need 5 years to solve this issue. We already know there is no shortcut, and our demand is to get relief from loadshadding initially, and then finish it completely as per promise.

Best of Luck with this Negativity.

i don't understand how this will help pakistan.

but one thing will be good that we will have 2 LESS corrupt ministers to worry about......if NAWAZ doesn't eat 3 peoples benefits & salaries that is......

less the ministers & cabinet the better! last 5 years we had the biggest cabinet in our history!

HELL we had 2 PRIME MINISTERS!!!! (pervaiz elahi the deputy minister)

Pakistan Prime Minister-elect Nawaz Sharif will oversee the sensitive foreign and defense portfolios as he seeks to forge a working partnership with the all-powerful military in the early days of his tenure, sources close to him said on Tuesday.

Sharif, ousted in a bloodless military coup in 1999, has decided not to appoint defense and foreign ministers in the cabinet he is putting together. He led his party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), back to power in May 11 elections.

Instead, he will select a retired civil servant as an adviser on foreign affairs - Tariq Fatemi, a former ambassador to the United States and the European Union, the sources said.

The army has ruled Pakistan for more than half its history since partition with India in 1947 and critics say generals have jealously guarded the right to dictate foreign policy.

The move to defer appointing a foreign minister suggests that Sharif wants to get to grips with the government's relationship with the army.

"The incoming government and the army need to be on the same page on key foreign policy issues, not least Pakistan's relations with Afghanistan, India and the United States," a PML-N insider told Reuters, requesting anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media about the issue.

The United States wants ally Pakistan to help rein in the Afghan Taliban before most NATO combat troops pull out of Afghanistan in 2014. Pakistan's arch rival, India, with which Pakistan has fought three wars since 1947, is constantly a perceived threat.

Pakistan is beset by high unemployment, a failing economy, widespread poverty, a Taliban insurgency and sectarian violence. The United States is troubled by elements in the country supporting Islamic militants fighting U.S. troops in neighboring Afghanistan.

"Supporting Western-backed attempts to engage with Taliban leaders in Afghanistan; what to do about India - until the government's policy contours are crystal clear, the prime minister is not willing to take any risks," the insider said.

Sharif was a protégé of military dictator General Zia ul-Haq in the 1980s. But he was overthrown by General Pervez Musharraf because he refused to allow an airliner carrying the army chief to land in Pakistan.

In the last days of his election campaign, Sharif spoke openly against what he called a "flawed" U.S. war on terror, raising questions about which direction he would try to push the trajectory of bilateral relations.

Pakistan backed the Taliban's rise to power in Afghanistan in the mid-1990s and is seen as a crucial gatekeeper in attempts by the U.S. and Afghan governments to reach out to insurgent leaders who fled to Pakistan after the group's 2001 ousting.

"Handling the U.S., Afghanistan and India after foreign troops withdraw from Afghanistan will be a very tough job," another PML-N source said.

"Right now, Sharif has decided he's the best man to do this delicate dance. He won't take the chance of someone else making a mess in the early days of his government."

Clever but Intriguing move by Nawaz Sharif! How he will handle the "Khakis" in GHQ remains to be seen though!
They will not let off their "Turf"; will they?! :)

I think COA was already briefed about this development when NS & Kiyani met. Do you people seriously think that he took this decision without the blessing of COA?? I don't think so, he wants to have a direct relationship/contact with the Armed forces, which is a good move, but will he be able to handle all this pressure?? well we need to wait & see :)
