WASHINGTON (Reuters/Tim Reid) - Pakistan's Washington lobbyists have launched an intense campaign on Capitol Hill to counter accusations that Islamabad was complicit in giving refuge to Osama bin Laden.

Alarmed by lawmakers' demands to cut off billions of dollars of U.S. aid after bin Laden was found living in a Pakistani safe house for six years, President Asif Ali Zardari has ordered a full-court press to quell mounting accusations that it helped the al Qaeda leader avoid capture.

Mark Siegel, a partner in the Washington lobbying firm of Locke Lord Strategies -- which is paid $75,000 a month by the Pakistani government -- told Reuters on Thursday he had spoken twice to Zardari since U.S. special forces killed bin Laden on Sunday, and "countless" times to the Pakistani ambassador in Washington.

"They are certainly concerned," Siegel said, adding that suggestions the Pakistani government knew about bin Laden's whereabouts was nothing more than speculation.

Referring to a statement by President Barack Obama's counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan, that there must have been a support system for bin Laden inside Pakistan, Siegel said: "There is no proof that a support system was government-based."

There is much at stake for Pakistan as many lawmakers question how bin Laden could have lived in a large fortified compound close to a Pakistani military base for so long.

Siegel isn't just any lobbyist. He helped Benazir Bhutto research and after her assassination wrote the introduction to her book:

...She believed that under dictatorship, extremism festered and grew, threatening not just the homeland of Pakistan but also the entire world...Benazir Bhutto was the bravest person I have ever known and a dear, irreplaceable friend.

Anyone who felt that strongly about Benazir is probably quite willing to support her husband in seeking the best for Pakistan from Congress. Given the billions at statke, is that worth $75K a month, or should his firm charge even more?

Well if it was not for 1000-2000 operatives that Pakistan captured and leads that ISI provided the mighty Navy SEALS might have landed in , Raheem Chacha's kulcha house and tandoori rooti.

My personal opinion is that Laden was captured by Afghan warlords , and brought unarmed into this compound , so close to Pakistan Army , in order to frame Pakistani Army , and Money was provided by CIA , operatives who were in touch with Warlords (Ramond Davis) , and that was one of the connections CIA was afraid to expose back few months ago which is why OBAMA came out to defend Ramond Davis

As for every thing else - it was all pre calculated

The house compound design do not look and feel Pakistani origin , infact these designed (architectural designs look more of work of a US contractor) who might have designed the compound.

Pakistani Homes are never constructed with such designs

Also , if USA was smart and shared intelligence , with Pakistan - few truck load of Army units would have been able to capture the residence of the compound safely with no International incident :police:

Also housing registration in Pakistan is done old fashioned way paper and pencil , and pen - so its not possible to track 100,000 homes being build and who the residents are , its not computerized process in pakistan - as our western counter parts may assume - we do not have that technological infrastructure in place.

This we already know.....but the reiteration of this despicable behavior from Indian members every now and then...... Assures and reminds us...that they never were...are ..... and will be our friends ..... but enemies... that need to be dealt with....and paid in the same coin........

All their talk about peace..... tranquility..... love.....friendship...... is meager....... peace rather heap of crap....... who will never wish us well... and keep on playing their usual double faceted role........ All this crap.... is just throwing dust in eyes of the world......

Your version of "Operation Geronimo" is opposite to what the Government of Pakistan gives to the press

Seems like a conspiracy theory.

The house compound design do not look and feel Pakistani origin , infact these designed (architectural designs look more of work of a US contractor) who might have designed the compound.

Government of Pakistan (GOP) says most of the houses in pakistan resembles this architectural designs, that is the reason why Osama's compound didn't raise any suspision.

Enemies we are. Never was and going by the trend never will be friends. BIG deal !! No one is going to loose sleep over that.

Double faceted role - when did India claim it is Pakistan's friend ? You must be out of your mind.

Yesterday or the day before your "dear friend" UAE issued stapled visas to the residents of P0K. That is called betrayal. Go complain to them.

Proxy it is..... proxy will it remain......

If thats supposed to be a threat, just know that it FAILED big time.

We have weathered 64 years of proxy wars and look where both the countries are there now. You are more than welcome to continue this proxy war in which your country is doing onto itself what we ought to be doing - saving us time, money and more importantly credibility.

Nothing new here, PR/Lobbying firms have been employed by Pakistan (and many other countries) in Washington D.C. for years. In the past, Pakistan has had to set up PR campaigns on numerous occasions there; most notably post 9/11 and at the time of the A.Q. Khan affair. This Osama incident and its background is a huge PR disaster for Pakistan.
Mr. Siegel will be hard pressed to earn his retainership and fees now!

10 bucks says that the legislation isnt passed.......
