Pakistan opted for F-16 than JAS Gripen
Tariq Iqbal | Sep 16, 2007, 14:11

Pakistan Air Force Air Cheif Marshall Tanveer Mehmood said in an interview that F-16 is a very capable jet and and even though the PAF was offered a very good deal for Saab Gripens they chose the F-16 as it is truly multi role and the Gripen is more suited for air superiority.

Air Cheif Marshall said, Saab is making a multirole version of the JAS Gripen called the Gripen NG, but F-16s have played an integral role in the Pakistan Air force air defence and they will always be treasured.

He said, that F-16 is the most mature 4th generation platform to acquire for the air force. Pakistan Air Force is also unsure of procuring more than the 18 F-16 Block 50-52 it ordered until all the deliveries are done by 2009.

Pakistan has been operating F-16 Fighting Falcon for more than 32 years, and it was a good decision to procure the same platform as the infrastruture and familiarity is already in placed.

During the embargo on Pakistan. Sweden refused to sell the Gripen to Pakistan. However, once Pakistan became a frontline ally of the United States on the war on terror. Sweden offered JAS Gripen and approved the $1 Billion deal for the Saab Erieye AEW&Cs aircrafts to Pakistan.

Interesting......So the Gripen was on offer....And it is regarded as a 4.5 gen aircraft by some people. So it is going to be interesting to see what the PAK 4.5 options are going to be. (Or if the BLK52's will have a similar performance to the Gripens.)

F-16 Block 50/52 do provide the same level of performance. The advantages of procuring F-16 is highlighted above. Another interesting development is by showing that is NOT interested in procuring more of the Block 50/52 aircrafts until all of them are delivered (thats more to do with politics). On the sideline for 4.5, we are going to have the FC-20 with western avionics, and better endurance.

Also it is being mentioned that JF-17 provides the same level of performance or will so that F-16 can provide, except that it doesn't have the same range or payload, but it is still loved by the PAF and will be used as a backbone.

JAS has US engine and parts, so its better to stick with F16. Plus Pakistan has fully trained crew ,plus turkey is great support for parts or any other services. Is Gripen flying by any muslim country ?

It doesn't really......I guess Haider is thinking along the lines of spare parts though.
In 2000 Pak arranged to get spare parts form Turkey.

Without the tacit approval of the origin country, these semi-dependent countries can go only 10% of distance. It is not a thing which is to be taken into consideration while buying.

I have only one question what if the U.S decides that over enthusiast Air Chief Marshall Tanveer Mehmood will not be granted his wish & puts sanctions on the subject of the the-16's to Pakistan wouldn't it have been better to have gone for the Gripens then going for the f16's even if better doesn't necessarily mean one is going to get it i love a brand new BMW but cant afford it.

Well if there are sanctions applied then the Gripen would be affected too......

There were contingencies already in place for that.

Hence the FC-20 already in a line up. Improved J-10 with western avionics, is probably the best fighter Pakistan get without spending a lot!
