A recent study done by Department of Irrigation and Water Management Research Centre, University of Agriculture Faisalabad revealed that Pakistan will face 31% water shortage by 2025 if water reserves are not increased by 35 MAF. current reserves stand at 100 MAF.

Let us discuss solutions to the problem.

The following dams must be built immediately.

  1. Kurram Tangi Dam. Storage capacity is 0.9 MAF..
  2. Kalabagh Dam. Active water storage capacity is 6.1 MAF.
  3. Akhori Dam. Active water storage capacity is 6 MAF.
  4. Dhok Pathan Dam. Storage 8.5 MAF.
  5. Sanjwal Dam. Storage is 3.6 MAF.
  6. Yugo Dam. Storage is 4.8 MAF
The total storage capacity of these 6 dams is 29.9 MAF.

who cares ? 10 years are too long our political elite is thinking for loot of tomorrow morning . and no one will add 1MAF until this shortage will go to worse .

Let us discuss solutions to the problem.

The following dams must be built immediately.

  1. Dasu Dam. Active water storage capacity is 11.4 MAF.
  2. Bunji Dam. Active water storage capacity is 6.4 MAF.
  3. Kalabagh Dam. Active water storage capacity is 6.1 MAF.
  4. Akhori Dam. Active water storage capacity is 7 MAF.
The total active water storage capacity of these 4 dams is 30.1 MAF.

and who will build them PPPP ofcourse not..
PML N well there behavior with regards to bhasha dam, thakot , akori proves that they are not interested either.
in the last 7 years since musharraf not a single hydro project was initiated(forget about completing) other than 95% foreign funded tarbela extension project which is very simple project without any substantial work. the other project of 3 MAF mangla uprising that was 99% completed in musharaaf era took another 4 year tin PPPP era to just complete the 1% work!
the only other project was NJ that was initiated by musharraf era (and both PPPP and PML N thinks its a head ache to complete!). this shows how uninterested the political elite is hydro project

lastly what you are quoting it COMPLETELY WRONG, NEITHER DASU OR BUNJI HAS ANY STORAGE capacity .
(dasu has a small storage of 1 MAF). the reason why DASU , BUNJI is high on list is due to their high return rate, as they are low cost per MW due to zero storage. thus easily funded by internation organizations. but they would not solve our storage problems. you will need to invest and build yourself those. why do you think we got funding so easily for tarbela. its return rate is astronomical with 34% (you get back your investment in 3 years)

owing to trouble political mess on kalabagh the best way is to go for akhori-sanjwal complex dam and bhasha dam.

WAPDA was given a task to find a low cost quick build (within 4-5 years) solution for storage and it came up with multiple option. of course, it was waste of money on doing feasibilities, as until PML N and PPPP exist nothing is going to happen.

Kalabagh is nothing but scape goat for both pro and anti kalabagh groups. The anti group use it for politics and pro group use it as a scape goat for not building any other dams.

i am pretty sure that the pro group will be very much disturbed if the anti group say go build kalabagh, the pro group will say hey who told you we want to build a dam in the first place !.

there are half a dozen proposal that are as good as kalabagh but govt doesnt want to build any dam in the first place, as dams dont give you votes. the figure shows the quick build low cost solution by wapda.

those who think PML N is interested , well they are not otherwise they would have initiated atleast something rather than waiting for international donars to fully fund something.

it has been nearly three years. just two more years to go. with govt failing to do anything in first three years, its priority is now on quick LNG solution in power sector. (lucky guys, head PPPP had such low price LNG in international market they would have probably solved power crisis too)

in fact what i saw in last three years is more line losses, more theft and
failure to initiate a fully funded 1.3 billion dollars Asian bank smart meter progra
m.

so best case scenario for next 3 years is stating of first stage of dasu dam which is completely funded by WB(God knows when it will be completed). which will not change anything on the storage front as it has nearly zero storage(0.7MAF live storage thats just for power gen regulation).

head we not done the mangla uprising back in 2003 we would have surely been doomed.

Thanks. I have edited my post and added more dams to the list. lease take an another look.

well sadly Pakistanis don't do anything UNTIL the shortfall is felt. For example electrcity issue:

not a single mega watt of energy was produced since Pakistan last built GHAZI BAROTHA canal back in 1998.

So in 2025 WHEN we feel the water shortage that is when the politicians will compete and try to attain votes on "ending water shortage in 6 months....1 year....3 years....5 years!"

disgraceful utterly disgraceful.

Pakistan is not short on TALEEM it is a shortage of TARBIYAT. We are so used to such incompetence on the part of our leaders that we just bend and take whatever they give us.

Besides what is written in Post no 1 ,Pak needs to focus on :

1. Relining canals to prevent / reduce seepage of water

2. Desilt existing Dams & water storage sources

please link the above said report and then we can look at dams under construction and their capacities and hopefully come up with a good idea on how much the Government is going to fall short by.

Hi i am using phone right now. Will do so when i login with laptop.

The thread title is misleading.

Adding 35 MAF implies from somewhere Pakistan needs to either discover or produce water.

Both of which are incorrect.

Dams are only tools for water management; they can store water and make water available when required.
They can not increase the amount of water in the system.

We must analyze the need of increased water; which is growing population.
It seems no one is ready to put the plug on.

Secondly there is a global phenomenon of weather change;
we MUST plant more trees; and defeat deforestation.

Our existence, our health is dependent on how many trees can we plant now.

and I am talking big trees, the ones which are local to this land. Not the fancy imported ones.

Otherwise there needs to be a mix of dam building and water conservation. The amount of water wasted in cities in Pakistan is appalling. To wash a car or to water the lawn it seems that there is no real understanding of how not to waste water. dripping facets and leaky pipes are the norm in many public buildings. The issue is dire and dams are the need of the day. But site by side a policy of water conservation is needed.

Also as mentioned these are important steps: -
1. Relining canals to prevent / reduce seepage of water

2. Desilt existing Dams & water storage sources

And there are small and medium sized dams in the process of construction also. An updated list has been hard to find because our government wapda website is a mess.
