What's new

Pakistan might consider the Klimov RD-33MK for JF-17

The original source is IHS Jane's, who spoke to Pakistani officials. In fact, whether we choose to believe in PAF sticking with RD-93 (December 2015) or changing RD-93 (April 2016), the source either way is Jane's.

Well nothing wrong with QUWA's publication however if it is backed with 2-3 Sources it would be nice

This is the first time I have heard about the vector / engines being considered for JF17 thunder

We got to be careful PDF-QUWA just do not cross reference each other

Would be a massive change if we change from

Russian RD-93/Guizhou WS-13

To start talking about a Third option

The problem with Pakistani defence news is that the news is almost always given through a single source, usually Jane's. We don't have people who go to these trade shows to ask questions directly, unfortunately.

Well occasionally few good ones come first on PDF, Auntie Jane not knows all as the saying goes

If we are indeed considering the engine that is key to twin engine platform why not just also bring in likes of J11 or Sukhoi-35 type platforms would make sense

Each of RD-93 and RD-33MK have their pros and cons. Service life of RD-33MK is about 4000 hours while of RD-93 is 2200 hours but the reduction in service life of RD-93 comes with gain in wet Thrust of RD-93 as 98KN as same for RD-33MK is 88KN. Till now PAF has faced no problems with RD-93 and I find no other reason for RD-93 to be changed but only one and that is that RD-93 can only be replaced with an Engine which provides higher thrust than it. RD-33MK can come in with any twin engine aircraft as it suits so.

As resilient as PAF is, and the sheer number of JF17s that there will be, PAF will always be looking for some option. Right now, RD93 is okay, but fast becoming a maintenance nightmare, as Chinese control everything. Russians are on the table but through people who are not really active in MRO business, so it will likely cause more issues. Down the road if Russians don't cooperate, it will be Chinese engine, like so many other PAF aircraft.

Indian Air force uses RD 33 --Series 3 on the MIG 29 Upgraded

Indian Navy uses RD 33 MK for Mig 29 K

The RD 33 -- Series 3 is MADE IN INDIA

India is a long time assembler and user of RD-33. This is why they protested tremendously and even almost successfully got the program stopped for JF17, till China intervened and bought all the engines in her name.

You are partially right and partially wrong too

We stalled the RD 93 deal for gaining time so that we could build up our Air force

Also we did another deal with Russia that for NOT agreeing to the sale of
AL 31 for J 10

Now we are confident that our Mig 29 and Mirage 2000 along with Mig 21
( All 3 have been heavily upgraded ) can easily overcome the JF 17

If you had any idea on the real serviceability data of your airforce, you may just share the chuckle with me.

IAF is a professional air force ; totally committed to its job and the country

Dont believe everything that you read or hear ; A lot of information that you read
is created and planted for some "interesting reasons "

if this become true this will be big boost for the rd33 mk jf17

Do you call the phone chatter between IAF base X OC ENG WING with BC Base X, and BC Base X with IAF HQ created or planted? Very interesting. It is open fact that IAF is struggling both on keeping pilots, operational squadrons, and maintenance.

Rang Day Basanti, was it?
