Pakistan may miss South Asian Karate event
our correspondent Monday, June 23, 2014

KARACHI: Pakistan may miss the South Asian Karate championship in New Delhi as the authorities are yet to get Indian visas for the athletes.

“We are still waiting for visas. If we do not get them tomorrow morning, we will not be able to participate in the championship,” Pakistan Karate Federation’s (PKF) President Mohammad Jehangir told ‘The News’ on Sunday.

The Indian High Commission in Pakistan has not yet got green signal from its government for issuing visas to Pakistan’s contingent.

“I talked to an official of the Indian High Commission who said how they could issue visas when they had not yet received the clearance from the Indian government,” Jehangir said.

It also means that Pakistan has already missed the Asian Referees/Coaches Course and Examination which will be held from June 23-24.

“Yes, we have missed that. You know we are the defending champions, so it would be really disappointing if we missed the championship,” Jehangir said.

Around 15 referees and judges who were set to leave for India will not be part of the contingent because their course starts on Monday (today).

The weigh-in of the karatekas for the slots will be held on Tuesday (tomorrow) and the two-day fights will begin from Wednesday.

The event will be conducted in seniors, juniors and cadet classes in which both male and female players will be showing their worth.

This is the first time that the junior and cadet categories have been inserted into the slots.

Pakistan are the defending champions in seniors.

If the visas are issued, around 35 people from Pakistan will travel to India on Tuesday (tomorrow) for the tournament.

Pakistan’s star player Saadi Abbas, Baz Mohammad, Mohammad Kashif, Kulsoom and Beenish Khan are some of the leading karatekas who are expected to help the country defend the title.

In the junior class, under-18 karatekas will participate, while in the cadet category under-16 players will show their mettle. The gold medallists of the senior category will then get a chance to appear in the Asian Champions Cup for which the dates and venue are yet to be announced.

On June 25, the Executive Committee meeting of the South Asian Karate Federation will also be held.

I hope their visas are issued as soon as possible, otherwise India would be blamed if the defending champions loose. :)
