Pakistan may double aeronautical fee, toll tax on NATO containers: report

kuch nai hoona Pakistan na phir amricay keh thallay lagna hai!

Route through Pakistan is used because it is cheaper than northern supply network.

If Pakistan increases the transit cost exorbitantly, automatically Northern distribution network becomes the cheaper option.
Besides with only 15000 troops to supply too, as opposed to 150,000. It would hardly make a dent.

But Pakistan not only depends on US for direct aid and hand outs(which has been cut). But all its international loans and debts which are sanctioned through IMF and World Bank etc require US approval, as US carries the maximum voting rights in these organisations.

It would extremely stupid of Pakistan to spite Trump in matters of money. US economy will not even feel the pin prick of Pakistan increasing the toll tax or aeronautical fees. But if US applies economic pressure on Pakistan. Pakistan economy with hemorrhage and bleed and will be on the verge on bankruptcy in matter of months.
Hello:
Lets assume Santa Clause is real and you have been a very good boy, so all your wishes of Pakistans doom come true. Tell me if these economic sanctions will be any worse than what already came in 90s after nuclear tests? And what happens if US is successful in strangling Paks economy, and wreaks havoc and chaos in the country through covert/overt actions ... what then? Will this improve or exacerbate their situation in Afghanistan? Conclude this day dream of yours ...

About Northern route: After tensions with Russia, the northern route is not that accessible anymore. Russians and Chinese have their own designs ...

NATO supplies should be allowed only after advance payment by US in Pakistan' escrow account in outside of US or Europe.

and these stupid Trump also think these toll taxes are also Aid to Pakistan:lol:

kiyani did that to , hoodwink his dealing with CIA , the drama he cashed out with Zardari & Nawaz sharif ?
still even in pak army , they see its a bogus drama , in which delta team 6 , was brought in , by switching all the radars near abottabad ?
then telling our F-16s to let , seal team 6 , fly away from pakistan ?it was never been done anytime before ,& in fact is ideal case for article 6 of the Constitution of pakistan .

May be... but without complicity of air chief no one can switch off any radar.
Pilots take orders from air chief not from army chief.
Kiyani is still around, but i have never seen the air chief ever again!

Kiyani... IMO, was on hard grounds all his tenure. I have no doubts on his patriotism and nothing can take away the credit from him for being the only army chief who capitalized on the available opportunity.

Pakistan may increase toll tax on containers carrying ammunition and other military hardware for US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) troops to Afghanistan by a huge 100 per cent, according to DunyaNews.

Presently, each container is charged $1700. Pakistani authorities are considering the option of blocking supplies of US troops deployed in Afghanistan through its territory amid the diplomatic tensions between Islamabad and Washington. The final decision will be taken by the federal government in this regard during the ongoing week.

Islamabad may also increase NATO’s aeronautical fee for the usage of its airspace. NATO is using Pakistan’s airspace for the last 16 years free of cost. At least 360 NATO flights used Pakistan airspace on a monthly basis when Afghan war was at its peak.

All supply of military hardware to NATO and US troops is carried out through Karachi port. The supply remained suspended for at least eight months after a NATO helicopter intentionally attacked and martyred 27 soldiers at Salala check post.

The US State Department on Thursday froze military aid to Pakistan until it took decisive action against terrorists operating in the country. It said it did not intend to reprogram any funds at this time.

The New Year tweet by US President Donald Trump accusing Pakistan of lies and deceit, thinking US leaders to be fooled, led to heightened tensions between Pakistan and the US.

“They give safe havens to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!” he said on January 1.

In an interview with The Guardian at the PM Office, Prime Minister Abbasi said that reports that the US was considering cuts of up to $2 billion in security assistance were bewildering as the total aid Pakistan – civilian and military – actually received was a tiny fraction of that amount.

“Pakistan is a sovereign country and Pakistan has always abided by international conventions,” he said in the report. “We are today fighting the largest war on terror in the world. We are fighting the world’s war on terror with our own resources … That is something the world has to appreciate.”

“We have over 6,500 [killed] almost 37,000 of the civilian population has been killed. There are tens of thousands of people injured. We have suffered a loss of over $120bn in our economy. So the world has to appreciate that. We just want the world to know that Pakistan is on the forefront on the war on this terror,” he stated further.

The federal cabinet on January 3rd, unanimously endorsed the stance adopted by National Security Committee (NSC) over the recent statements by the American leadership, terming them “detrimental” to the bilateral relationship between Islamabad and Washington—a relationship that has developed over generations.

The cabinet considered a proposal for granting extension in the Proof of Registration (POR) Cards and Tripartite Agreement (Pakistan–Afghanistan–UNHCR) for Afghan Refugees beyond December 31, 2017.

The meeting had also decided that the issue of early repatriation of Afghan refugees shall be raised with the UNHCR and with the international community. Pakistan’s economy has carried the burden of hosting Afghan refugees since long, and in the present circumstances, the country cannot sustain it further, emphasised the cabinet.

Losses incurred by Pakistan in war on terror

Earlier, official documents presented during an NSC meeting had suggested that Pakistan suffered losses worth Rs10tn in fighting terrorism over the last 16 years.

The documents suggest that Pakistan suffered a loss Rs5.3tn in its tax recovery system, sources disclosed. Similarly, Pakistan also witnessed a decline in foreign investment by Rs1.99tn, whereas Rs928bn in damages were caused to the country’s basic infrastructure.

In reference to privatisation, the country incurred losses worth Rs262bn, while an additional Rs15bn damages were incurred due to persisting uncertainty, sources added.

The highest losses incurred by Pakistan, i.e. Rs2.03tn, came in year 2010-11, followed by Rs1.96tn in 2012-13.

In 2009-10, Pakistan suffered losses of Rs1.13tn losses.

This is the right way to go, should have done this long back. This way there is clarity on toll paid for use vs aid. However, you have to keep fees in reasonable limits to not appears unfair. Please keep in mind, there are many other places where you could invite US to do the reverse.

you are entitled of your own views , he was a crooked commander , remember just one thing , in pakistans armed forces setup , COAS is the biggest & final of athourity , PAF has less & hard core ground equipments then PA air defence ?
just check that , there is a difference between a open traitor or a croupt selfish commander , he is qualified for the later one ?
& even that puts him for article 6 ?

GHQ attack , Salala attack then Mehran base attacks are just few scales how hard he was on the grounds ?
ask within troops he was a coward , but a good planner .

Words are cheap. The American's are only bragging about an alternative route. If they feel so confident about the alternative route they would have opted for it long ago. These are the same Americans who had to issue an apology after the Salala incident when Pakistan closed its supply routes. The alternative route was not successful back then. It won't be today.

Pakistan will charge more. Enough to keep the Yanks tempted and also send a reminder that exploitation is over.

The US can't do shit without Pakistani cooperation in Afghanistan. The supply routes are just one part of the overall cooperation.

Besides, I don't see how the US is going to rely on the Russian route when they accuse them of meddling in their elections. Didn't Trump recently term Russia as a competitor that wants to realign global power in their interest, potentially threatening the US? Pretty damaging assessment.

Because an Indian american wannabe said so??

Don't just increase it once, increase it twice, then 3 times, then 4 times over time until Americans shipment stops.

Do you know how many month Pakistani supply lines were closed after the Salala incident?

It was calculated transporting supplies through NDN will cost $690 million/yr compared to $280 million/yr when shipping them through Pakistan and that was when NATO was on the peak of its deployment with more than 15,000 troops in Afghanistan.

But now US has one tenth of that number stationed in Afghanistan, who are just involved in training and intelligence gathering ops and not combat ops.
Interpolating from the earlier calculation.

It would cost US $69 million to supply US troops year long when transporting through NDN , and $28 miillion through Pakistan. That is a difference of just $41 million/yr.

Just $41 million more per year to transport supplies through NDN instead of Pakistan. Do you know, how much money Americans saved by cutting off your yearly aid/CSF etc. more $2000 million.

Perhaps that is why your government decided not stop the supply route, for it would make negligible impact American pockets, just infuriate them more. And if you piss them off too much, they would squeeze your economy.

The answer lies in your question. If the closure of such a short time made such an impact back then it is not very hard to understand the impact right now.

The numbers are quite significant and can increase anytime soon. Especially considering how bad the US war is going. Also, if the numbers are truly low the US would have opted for an alternative long ago. They clearly haven't and by the looks of it don't look like in the foreseeable future. That puts an end to your speculation.

Like I have already said. Let the US go ahead and demonstrate how it can survive without Pakistani supply routes. The ball is in US court. The US has been assessing an alternate route for 16 years now. Pakistani cooperation extends beyond supply routes. Keep that in mind.

Their is a reason, your present and past government is $hit scare of Americans, not just because of American military prowess. It is because they have the biggest influence in all the International lending organisations.

A country, which runs on borrowed money, with international debt amounting to $85 Billions and reserves just 1/4 that amount, they ought to be scared of American economic muscle.

Yet, here we are discussing the option of closure. Something is wrong with your sabre rattling. It just doesn't seem to add up.

It is understandable that as an Indian you like to paint a one-sided picture. The truth is much more complex.

What impact did it make. They did supply their troops through NDN all those months, when Pakistani route was closed.

Back then it costed them $410 million more yearly , now it would costs only $41 million more to transport through NDN, They just saved $2 Billion by cutting off your yearly aid.

Infact ball is in Pakistan's court and Pakistan refused to hit it back. American have already made their first move, they have cut off your aid, but Pakistan refused to close the supply route.
