Pakistan lodges strong protest against NATO over air strikes

There is a big difference between protesting against violations and making excuses for terrorists.....

If thts the case wonder why is foriegn office is protesting strongly

What "strong" protest?? Pakistan has done exactly what? issue a letter? a statement?

I'm sorry but I don't see any "strong" protest - no routes have been cut, fuel supplies continue unabated, supplies are of loaded in Pakistani ports and trucks still transport them to Afghanistan.

I'm sure Zardari has probably sold some agreement to NATO, so it's all good guys. Zardari wouldn't do something that wasn't already predetermined.

.
So, these were Pakistanis? Not Afghan Taliban of the Haqqani variety??

OK, lets say that these were Pakistanis, Is it OK for "Pakistanis" to cross into Afghanistan, attack Afghan or ISAF and then retreat to Pakistani territory?

not its not Ok for pakistanis to cross in muse, but if they do cross over you better damn well shoot em there, once they cross durand everything is off limits..If ISAF wanted to go after these guys they should have had passed on the info to PAF and let us shoot em but barging in our territory and then "vowing" to win public confidence is just moronic

The only problem with this line of reasoning is that US has been asking Pakistan to go after the Haqquani group for some time now with no results. Now they are throwing in a couple of incidents like these to make it difficult for Pakistan to stall the decision any further

.
\Dont they have some sort of an agreement on drone strikes?

No. The protests by the govt is the best example.

No they are not.... even if they are our jets will be more then happy to escort them out....

We are talking about PAF taking out NATO aircrafts/choppers/drones during their intrusions into Pakistani territory.

US and NATO will lose more if we pull out of this WOT.
Pakistan is now an integral part of WOT. It cannot separate itself. Just like US cannot suddenly pull out of Iraq or UK/other NATO counties cannot bring back their soldiers.

See, Creder, we all know why the ISAF will not bother passing any info to the PAF - they don't trust them - please don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a good thing or a bad thing, it just is the way it is - the Pakistanis think they have a horse in this race, they don't - even the poor Afghan does not have a horse in this race.

While the foreign ministry spokesman is busy complaining, ordinary Pakistanis with their hands stretched out are eating out of US Meals Ready to Eat, and grateful for that -- it's the truth, it's the reality of Pakistan -- Should the American take his ball and go play elsewhere? for my money, yes, but there are those out stretched hands to consider and some of those hands belong to Pakistani politicians and bureaucrats and uniformed personnel.

Pakistan to raise Nato helicopter violation issue
Wednesday, 29 Sep, 2010

ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister, Rehman Malik said on Wednesday that the issue of Nato helicopter violations in Pakistani areas will be raised by the Army Chief in the Pak-Afghan Commission.

While talking to the media outside parliament house, Malik said that Pakistan has strongly protested to the US, Afghan ambassadors and Nato against the recent violation of Nato helicopters.

Malik said that no one is allowed to launch operation within Pakistani borders. He also said that Pakistan is trying to achieve drone technology.

Malik said that he told US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that halting the drone attack in Pakistan will help minimise anti-US sentiment among Pakistani people. – DawnNews

“ANSF received direct and indirect fire at Combat Outpost Narizah near the Pakistan border. An air weapons team in the area observed the enemy fire, and following International Security Assistance Force rules of engagement, crossed into the area of enemy fire.”ISAF aircraft then fired on the militants killing more than 30, the statement said, adding that two helicopters returned to the border area on Saturday and killed several more insurgents.

“Initial reports indicate no civilian were injured or killed during either operation,” the ISAF statement said.

How does Pakistan even know if the ISAF crossed over into Pakistan? If the PAF was there, they should have fired on any "enemy" fire originating on their side of the border. If they weren't there then how do they know ISAF even actually crossed the border? Just on the say-so of the ISAF? What do they know? They don't even know where the true, internationally recognized, border is in that area. Does anyone? Does the Haqqani network agree about where their "border" is?

Seems something like that was mentioned...
Military sources said the message communicated to the Nato command was crystal clear that in view of declining public support for war on terror, the security of Nato supply routes through Pakistan could be threatened in the aftermath of the new air campaign.

I don't understand the problem here was civilians killed ? If not then what is wrong with the ISAF crossing over to kill terrorists that also crossed over themselves. What is the protest here about ?

.
Whats the problem with killing the terrorists? If Pakistan doesn't have resources to do that, shouldn't it allow NATO to take care of it? After all ..... Pakistan is a major ally in war against terror. (Sounds like a oxymoron to me!)

Nato was asked to coordinate its actions with Pakistan military and avoid crossing the ‘red lines’ — a euphemism for Pakistani sensitivities.
Nato changes stance after protest by Pakistan

US military chief Admiral Mike Mullen called the Pakistani military leadership on Tuesday and assured them that Washington respected Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The calls, diplomatic sources said, were made after Pakistan lodged strong protests against a series of attacks by the US-led International Security Assistance Force during the last three days, and conveyed to the United States that if forces in Afghanistan continued to violate its territorial integrity it would be forced to consider appropriate response.
At Pentagon, spokesman Col Dave Lapan told journalists on Tuesday that recent cross-border air strikes by Nato helicopters in Pakistan might have violated procedures and resulted from “communication breakdowns”.
Diplomatic sources in Washington told Dawn that Pakistan had informed the Americans that while Islamabad was America’s partner in the war against terror, “they are very sensitive to their sovereignty and territorial integrity”. The Pakistanis insisted that the UN and Nato mandate for operating inside Afghanistan ended on the Afghan border and “it does not cover an inch of Pakistani territory”.

The talks were focused on "what were the communication breakdowns, what happened, what was supposed to happen," Lapan said.

Procedures call for ISAF forces to contact Pakistani officers if coalition troops must cross the border, either before or during an operation, he said.

But ISAF forces were not able to notify Pakistani officers about the helicopter strikes until after the operation, he said, without offering more details.

"I think I can say that clearly in these instances things didn't occur in the way that they're supposed to. And that's what we're trying to get to," he said.
