Pakistan investing $150m in billion-tree reforestation
Illegal-logging and the threat of climate change, has led one province to begin a massive tree-planting effort.

Pakistan's forests are shrinking rapidly because of illegal logging.

Coupled with land erosion and the threat of climate change, one northern province has decided to start a massive tree-planting effort.

They plan to plant a billion trees over the next four years, and are investing approximately $150m into the scheme.

Nursery owners in the region believe the initiative will not only boost the their own businesses, but also bring in more people to invest in the industry.

Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder reports from Khyber Pakhtunkwa province.

It is a high cost but the cost of not planting increases many folds....

With less tree you will have multi billion dollar problems from landslides, soil erosion, floods, desertification, water tables being altered and all of these lead to death which is not weighted in any amount (the right type of tree prevent each of these)...

Trees give you a future resource, balance the underground water table, fix CO2 from the atmosphere to clean up the air- those that grow near water areas can clean up water and even those which strive in places like peat can purify water by taking up some metals. Illegal loggers should be punished and made an example of!!

Illegal logging can't take place without the permission of people in power. How are they going to stop that.

According to international standards, at least 25% of total land should consist of forests.
Country / Forested area(km2) / % of land area

Pakistan / 42,240 / 5.31%

Japan 253,203 [20] 67.00%

Are the numbers even real? Amazing if true for Japan!

And nice job, Qatar!

That's a lot of low density space we could fill with forests.

I think most of the land in Pakistan is barren and rocky and not suitable for forests.
Thats not true. indus belt, if its good for vegetation, means its perfect for growing trees too. punjab's land is very fertile but with minimal % of forests. We could blame the the big population for it. Yes Balochistan is barren and rocky province with no rivers etc. KPK has the highest % of forests. Forests accounts for 18-20% of the whole province. Which is promising but the timber Mafia is out to cut that down too. Projects like these along with strict penalties for the timber mafia we would be able to increase the density and land covered.

Even if 25% of the above mentioned figures are achieved it would help nature and pakistan at large.

I still see a lot of this amount and figures will just move around in books and not on ground. :(
