Pakistan, India to form strategy against extremism

ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Aftab Khan Sherpao said Pakistan and India would jointly work out a strategy to eradicate the extremism.

Aftab Khan Sherpao said this while talking to the journalists at Islamabad airport on Saturday as he returned after attending the SAARC conference.

The interior minister said the member states of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) agreed on developing a mechanism for exchange of information to eradicate the curse of terrorism and drugs.

He said the recommendations regarding the information mechanism were discussed during the conference and the participants agreed upon the need for collective efforts to combat terrorism.

He went on to say that the issues including human trafficking, money laundering and fake currency were discussed in the conference and it was decided that the SAARC states would hold three meetings next year in Islamabad in which police chiefs, law experts and experts working against terrorism, present their suggestions regarding these issues.

He said he also met with Afghan interior minister during his visit to India and discussed with him, in length, a number of issues. He said Pakistan had offered training to Afghan police officials. He said his meeting with his Indian counterpart, Shevraj Patel, was also constructive. He said they had decided to enhance Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) between the two countries.

this is nothing new, things like this often happen.

but in my personal point of view, PAK-India cannot work jointly in this field.

please explain why it wont work.

Now there are speculations, sometimes even proof, that india and pakistan are sponsoring terrorism in each others' soil. if we co-operate, we can eliminate this pathetic policy of sponsoring terrorism, making either country safer

Things doesnt work this way SU. The problem is with both the sides that their polices are each others centric. Unless this stops, nothing better can be achieved no matter what we do. I would give an example here if india would had join IPI project, then in her policy to destabilize baluchistan had to be changed aswell, so india decided to get out of the project. Bottom line is we have no trust in each other, whatever steps in the past uptill now have been taken didnot changed the fact that we both consider each other a threat and train to counter it.

i think things like these come and go with no lasting effects.
threats for both countries are different.

Kashmir is the core issue between the two neighbours and as long as it remains unresolved, the full trust between the two is impossible. Nobody can disagree with it and it must be solved as more tougher issues have been solved or on the verge of solving, e.g. East and West Germany, North and South Korea etc.

North and South Korea issue is not solved yet. both are officially still at war. they are also very wary of each other.

Its true that India and pak cant get anywhere serious without solving kashmir issue. but if there's co-operation on anti-terrorism operations, then maybe it'll be a step forward to solving kashmir issue.

lady/gents - it comes down to only one thing - TRUST DEFICIT!!
both countries need to take bold steps to eradicate extremism otherwise it is just another feel-good idea.

Since the start of the dismantling of N.Korea, North and South relations has been improving. S.Korea desires to have good relations with the North so they suggested a four nations negotiation to formalise a possible peace treaty.

If this is to materialise, then it would be a historic event for the world and East Asia in terms of stability.
