Pakistan, India to conduct first joint military exercise since 1947

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and India will conduct joint military exercises in August this year for the first time since 1947.

These exercises are part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s (SCO) Peace Mission 2018. Russia, China, India and Pakistan will take part in the exercise, with the mission’s primary focus being counter-terrorism operations.

The arch-rivals will conduct this military drill as part of a larger multi-national military exercise in the Ural Mountains of Russia.

Although Pakistani and Indian troops have participated together as members of various United Nations peacekeeping missions in the past, this will be the first time militaries of both countries will participate in joint counter-terrorism drills.

These SCO multi-nation military exercises are held once every two years and peace mission 2018 will be the fifth edition.

SCO was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by Tajikistan, Kyrghistan, Russia, China and Kazakhstan. With the inclusion of India, Uzbekistan and Pakistan, SCO now has eight countries as its full members. Additionally, four countries enjoy observer status and six countries are dialogue partners.

Taking part in joint military exercises is a good begining. Pakistan needs to have cordial relations with all of her neighbours’ including India, albeit on level terms. Besides, remember the famous saying:

“Keep your friends close and your enemies closer”.

It would be so exciting if pak and india start a dual exercise (only hypothetical i know). But it would be like a world cup event for both the countries

Reporting a multinational military exercise and using the title of "Pakistan India to hold JOINT military exercise". Nothing wrong technically but don't you think it gives people the wrong idea? It is NOT what it sounds like. We are not going to be holding any independent military exercise with India like friends but it is just that we will both be part of a multi-national exercise to be held in Russia.

I am all up for peace with neighbouring countries including India. If we do not have geographical dispute between Indi, there is so much common between us

What????? Is there any guaranty that soldiers from both side would not fight together during exercise ? There is no trust yet between two neighbouring countries.

Have you heard of UN missions ? Indo Pak units operate together there too
