Pakistan has objections over 4 hydroelectric Indian projects

Islamabad- Minister for inter-provincial coordination Riaz Hussain Pirzada today said that Pakistan had objected to India over the design of four hydroelectric projects initiated during the last five years in violation of the design criteria of the Indus Water Treaty.


Responding to a question in the National Assembly on behalf of Minister for Water and Power he said objections to Ratle Miyar, Lower Kalnai and Pakal Dul on Chenab River were discussed in two meetings of permanent Indus commission last year and will further be discussed in the meeting of the commission next month.


To another question he said about 30 million acre feet of water is wasted annually in the country due to lack of sufficient storage capacity.


He said the government started two solar power plants of 50 megawatt each at Bahawalpur Solar Park.


Riaz Hussain Pirzada told the House that there was a proposal to open additional utility stores which would create five thousand more employment opportunities.

The last time they raised objections the result was rather skewed and their government still tried to spin it as a victory. India's core assertions in this matter are iron clad. Proof being in the pudding, three major contentions were made by Pakistan in the Kishanganga case-

1) That India does not have the right to divert the flow of the waters of the Neelum for any purpose - Verdict was that India can indeed divert the water for its projects which are anyway run of the river projects.

2) That a minimum flow of 100 cusecs must be maintained by India- Verdict was that India is bound to maintain a flow of only 9 cusecs down river.

3) That India cannot use the draw-down flushing method for sediment clearing in its dams- Verdict awarded in Pakistan's favor.

I am sure even the laymen can gauge the relative importance of said contentions and what has been exhibited by the corresponding verdicts.
