Pakistan hands over new building to Kabul University

The Government of Pakistan handed over the newly constructed building of Allama Iqbal Faculty of Arts to the Kabul University at an impressive ceremony held at the Kabul University campus. The mega project of the university has been constructed by National Logistics Cell (NLC) under Pakistan’s bilateral assistance programme for Afghanistan.

NLC is undertaking construction of five mega projects in health and education sectors, sponsored by the Government of Pakistan. Other projects being constructed by NLC in Afghanistan are Sir Syed Post Graduate Science Faculty Block Nangarhar University, Nishter Kidney Centre Jalalabad, Liaqat Ali Khan Engineering Faculty Block Bulkh University Mazar-e-Sharif and Jinnah Hospital Kabul.

Ambassador of Pakistan to Afghanistan Mohammad Sadiq handed over the keys of the building to the Chancellor of Kabul University, Professor Hamidullah Amin. Acting Minister for Higher Education, Mr. Sarwar Danish, senior Afghan officials, members of Afghan Parliament and leading members of Pakistani community in Afghanistan attended the handing over ceremony.

In his brief remarks at this occasion Ambassador Sadiq underlined the importance of strengthening of cooperation between the two countries in the field of education. He said Iqbal Faculty will become a symbol of Pakistan’s desire and contribution for promoting higher education and learning for Afghanistan’s future generations.

The state-of-the-art building has been built by Government of Pakistan for the Kabul University at a cost of over US$ 10 million.

The building contains 28 class-rooms, 2 seminar-halls, library, 2 computer labs, 20 faculty offices and its own water supply, sewerage and power generation systems. The building has also been fully furnished and equipped by the Government of Pakistan.

The Allama Iqbal Faculty of Arts, with a covered area of 143,379 square feet, is Kabul University’s largest building which would help the University in accommodating several faculties of social sciences.

Sarwar Danish, Acting Minister of Higher Education, the Chief Guest at the ceremony, thanked the Government and people of Pakistan for this valuable gift. Chancellor of Kabul University Professor Hamidullah Amin also appreciated the construction of this building by Pakistan and emphasized for developing long term institutional linkages with Pakistani Universities.

It merits mention here that the completion of projects in face of heavy odds and in the difficult environment of the war-torn country is regarded as landmark achievement of NLC by the Afghan Govt as well as foreign donors in Afghanistan. Besides creating tremendous amount of goodwill among Afghans, the projects has been rewarding for the people of the brotherly country on other counts.

NLC has employed local skilled Afghan workers. The exposure and experience of local petty contractors and workers to high standard of construction and follow up of the specifications has provided an excellent base to the locals to enhance their skills and build the capacity in Afghanistan.

This is good news. A strong Afghan government can keep the Taliban threat to a minimum.

Good news.
One observation, I think there is one thing we Indians shouldn't do in Afghanistan and that is whatever we are building there, we should not name them after Indians. They better be named by the Afghans.

You can name after an Indian if they know him as for Allama Iqbal he is known more to Persian speakers then Urdu ones and Dari a dialect of Persian is official language of Afghanistan so, Afghan's know Allama Iqbal very well.
Yes, Iqbal may be a popular figure in Afghanistan, I have no idea. So probably that will work. I'm just talking about things in general. Say, we name the hydel power station in Salma Dam, after Rajiv Gandhi. How odd will that sound ? It will feel like we are imposing ourselves upon the Afghans. We should never do something like that.

Iqbal is not only popular in Afghanistan, but in Iran as well people in Arab world know him bcoz of his poetry...I remember one of my Arab friend asking me about "Shikwa & Jawabi Shikwa"... It has also being sung in arabic by famous Egyptian female singer UmQulsum if I am not wrong..

how this sounds, National university of naswar & chars.

Iqbal not only is popular, its a Muslim name and last I checked Afghanistan's majority is still beef eating Muslims. It is not as if India would not have wished to name their constructions as Ram, Sham, Babu lal, Kirshan, Kishan or Chawla etc etc (considering how they went after one petty road in India), it is just that India cannot, even deep down it wants to but cannot and it would be better for peace of this whole region that India realises its actual status in Afghanistan soon. Irrelevant people can try as hard as they wish to prove themselves important but still they will remain irrelevant.
