Pakistan hands over new building to Kabul University
The Government of Pakistan handed over the newly constructed building of Allama Iqbal Faculty of Arts to the Kabul University at an impressive ceremony held at the Kabul University campus. The mega project of the university has been constructed by National Logistics Cell (NLC) under Pakistans bilateral assistance programme for Afghanistan.
NLC is undertaking construction of five mega projects in health and education sectors, sponsored by the Government of Pakistan. Other projects being constructed by NLC in Afghanistan are Sir Syed Post Graduate Science Faculty Block Nangarhar University, Nishter Kidney Centre Jalalabad, Liaqat Ali Khan Engineering Faculty Block Bulkh University Mazar-e-Sharif and Jinnah Hospital Kabul.
Ambassador of Pakistan to Afghanistan Mohammad Sadiq handed over the keys of the building to the Chancellor of Kabul University, Professor Hamidullah Amin. Acting Minister for Higher Education, Mr. Sarwar Danish, senior Afghan officials, members of Afghan Parliament and leading members of Pakistani community in Afghanistan attended the handing over ceremony.
In his brief remarks at this occasion Ambassador Sadiq underlined the importance of strengthening of cooperation between the two countries in the field of education. He said Iqbal Faculty will become a symbol of Pakistans desire and contribution for promoting higher education and learning for Afghanistans future generations.
The state-of-the-art building has been built by Government of Pakistan for the Kabul University at a cost of over US$ 10 million.
The building contains 28 class-rooms, 2 seminar-halls, library, 2 computer labs, 20 faculty offices and its own water supply, sewerage and power generation systems. The building has also been fully furnished and equipped by the Government of Pakistan.
The Allama Iqbal Faculty of Arts, with a covered area of 143,379 square feet, is Kabul Universitys largest building which would help the University in accommodating several faculties of social sciences.
Sarwar Danish, Acting Minister of Higher Education, the Chief Guest at the ceremony, thanked the Government and people of Pakistan for this valuable gift. Chancellor of Kabul University Professor Hamidullah Amin also appreciated the construction of this building by Pakistan and emphasized for developing long term institutional linkages with Pakistani Universities.
It merits mention here that the completion of projects in face of heavy odds and in the difficult environment of the war-torn country is regarded as landmark achievement of NLC by the Afghan Govt as well as foreign donors in Afghanistan. Besides creating tremendous amount of goodwill among Afghans, the projects has been rewarding for the people of the brotherly country on other counts.
NLC has employed local skilled Afghan workers. The exposure and experience of local petty contractors and workers to high standard of construction and follow up of the specifications has provided an excellent base to the locals to enhance their skills and build the capacity in Afghanistan.
