Pakistan Forces Attack Taliban Hideouts, Kill 18 Militants
PESHAWAR | APR 14, 2011
At least 18 militants were killed and 22 more injured when helicopter gunships and fighter jets bombed Taliban hideouts in different parts of the Mohmand tribal region of northwest Pakistan today, security officials said.
The air strikes targeted Taliban sanctuaries in Anbar, Baizai and Safi areas of Mohmand Agency.
Ten hideouts were destroyed in the attacks, officials said.
Local residents said fighter jets bombed militant hideouts in Safi and Baizai areas while gunship helicopters were used in the operations in Anbar.
They also said at least three civilians, including a woman, were killed in Safi.
Mohmand Agency, which is situated north of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa capital Peshawar, has been affected by the activities of Taliban fighters for the past few years.
In December last year, a suicide attack on a check post outside a World Food Programme relief centre in the region killed over 40 people.
