Pakistan said on Thursday it feared India could make 100 nuclear warheads a year by diverting fissile material transferred from the United States and other powers.

Zamir Akram, Pakistan's ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, said civilian nuclear agreements were providing its rival, whose arsenals are larger, with “the transfer of unlimited amounts of fissile material”.

Safeguards arrangements contained in bilateral agreements, aimed at preventing diversion of highly enriched uranium and plutonium stocks to weapons production, were “not foolproof”, he told the UN-backed Conference on Disarmament.

“There is every danger that imported fissile material designated for civilian use will be secretly diverted for weapons-making purposes as was done in the past. In such a situation, the annual production of weapons can be as much as 100 nuclear warheads,” Akram said in a speech.

India's disarmament ambassador Hamid Ali Rao dismissed Akram's remarks as “gratuitous and unfounded”.

“We urge the Pakistani delegation to avoid bringing up extraneous issues designed to create obstacles in the path of the conference on disarmament getting down to serious and substantive work,” Rao said in a speech.

India's “impeccable non-proliferation record” was widely recognised, he said.

Pakistan has blocked the start of negotiations at the 65-member conference on banning production of fissile material, arguing that would put it at a permanent disadvantage to India.

India and the United States signed a civilian nuclear deal in 2008, ending India's nuclear isolation since it tested a nuclear device in 1974. Last week Britain signed an agreement on nuclear energy cooperation with India.

the entire NSG,USA,RUSSIA,UK,FRANCE nobody have problem or concerns, only pakistanis have dought and problem

Isn't that the same case on the Indian side ?? When we buy a weapon, even the seller has no issues, but the Indians are the only ones to have an issue with our weapons buying.

These are diplomatic tit for tats, so no need to get emotional.

Let the diplomats do the work.

Yaar, yahi to rona hai. Hum sharafat ki had tak sharif hai.

So, no worries for pak. Our politicians will not allow it for bombs. If they had such dedication for nation then the things have been different.

I don't remember the last time India reacted that bad to any Pakistan Defense Procurement, lately.

Its only Pakistan that has been shouting at India Defence Budget....and procurements.

No need to worry. All the nuclear reactors and fuel shall be monitored by the IAEA. As such we are not looking to expand our nuclear arsenal. We are working on techniques to use Thorium to replace Uranium and Plutonium.

Very True…like India is trying to block French avionics for JF 17.

Everything depends on the clout of the nation. Now, India is in position to influence most of the countries. OTOH, Pakistan has no leverage whatsoever on any world power. So, its a futile attempt by Pakistan in NSG.

the fuel coming from nsg nations r definitly not intented for defence purpose, iaea is monitoring it

however their r also some reactors kept for military purpose outside the monitoring of iaea,we r purchasing seperate fuel for that from some allied nations, now what we do with that, increase our arsenal or not,is ours choice, nobody needs to brag abt that

We have enough thermonuclear bombs for deterrence: Kakodkar

We have a credible thermonuclear bomb?

Why are you using singular? Make that plural.

We have thermonuclear bombs in the plural? With a yield of at least 45 kt each?

Much more than that. I told you we have the possibility of a deterrence of low kt to 200 kt.

In a nutshell, that means India does not needs to divert nuclear fuel.

We donot need nuclear fuel for weapons as of now...

but our dire need is energy with the industries coming up and need for enery rising high year by year. we are more concerned about economy then the military or the missiles. the common man needs electricity power jobs and when we dont have the fuel factories wont be there and if factories wont be there there would be no jobs... so jobs are more important then the nuclear bomb grade fuel which ever will used is highly skeptical
