Pakistan drafts law to combat cyber crimes
Finance minister says using digital financial channels theft and fraud
A draft law is being prepared to combat cyber crimes and funding of terrorists in Pakistan, finance minister Ishaq Dar said on Monday.
Addressing an international banking conference in Islamabad, he said the draft would soon be presented to the parliament for legislation.
The finance minister said using digital financial channels such as electronic and mobile banking reduces the probability of theft and fraud.
He said that promotion of digital banking will also help increase remittances to Pakistan which saw a surge of 15.21 per cent in the first four months of current financial year ending June 30 in 2014.
“Our branchless banking models are recognised globally and there is a need to make more concerted efforts to drive the branchless banking sector through mobile and other latest technologies for the benefit of far flung areas,” the minister said.
Dar said the government is committed to implementing its economic reform agenda with the aim to achieve high GDP growth rate and ensure its benefits reach the grassroots level.
As a key element of the economic agenda, the government is supporting poor segments of the society through various supportive initiatives, he said.
The government is targeting the most vulnerable population through its income support programme while several projects including loan schemes have been launched for the youth, Dar added.
Earlier, Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Ashraf Mahmoud Wathra said branchless banking was being encouraged to cater for the rural and underserved areas of the country.
Pakistan, he said, is one of the largest branchless banking markets in the world with branchless accounts rising to 4.7 million.
