Shoaib, Asif face fitness problems


The new coach detailed that Muhammad Asif is fit enough to bowl in the matches but his elbow is a bit painful while throwing during the fielding but hopefully he will be fit enough till the mega event next month. To a question about the training, Geoff replied that they have been training in the camp emphasising on every part of the game but he thought Pakistan team need more mental training than the physical one to get prepared for the big matches.

Ace fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar had a rest owing to illness while all-rounder Shahid Afridi also skipped the last day training as he had to go to Karachi for his family commitments. The illness of fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Muhammad Asif close to the mega event may be a serious concern for the team. Both the bowlers also missed the ICC World Cup 2007 due to fitness problems and the team could not qualify for the second stage.

ICC Awards: Yousuf, Asif among 66 nominees

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced 66 nominees in seven categories for the annual ICC awards Tuesday with only two Pakistani players Muhammad Yousuf and Muhammad Asif.

The award ceremony will be held in Johannesburg on September 10.

The nominations for the International Cricket Council (ICC) awards were announced in a ceremony in Mumbai.

ICC chief Malcolm Speed addressing the ceremony said the world cricket governing body is giving awards to create a spirit of excellence in cricketers.

The ICC announced 66 nominees in seven categories for the annual awards including ‘Captain of the Year’, ‘ODI player of the year’, ‘emerging player of the year’, ‘best Test player of the year, the best ODI team, best Test team etc.

Nominations for 'Captain of the year' award include Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene and Australia's Ricky Ponting.

Pakistan’s Muhammad Yousuf and Muhammad Asif have been included in the best Test player’ category.

The nominations for the 'Umpire of the year' include Mark Benson, Simon Taufel and Daryl Harper.

Cricinfo - Asif injured in dressing room spat

Pakistan's preparations for the Twenty20 World Cup have been rocked by an "incident" between Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif in Johannesburg which has led to the latter injuring his leg.

According to sources, the two were allegedly involved in a dressing room spat which resulted in Asif being struck by a bat on his left thigh. The injury is not thought to be anything more serious than a bruise but a team investigation into the matter is now pending and an announcement is expected tomorrow.

Team management decides sending back errant Shoaib Akhtar

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) team management has decided to send fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar back home after a disciplinary action taken on the charge of his hitting Muhammad Asif and injuring him with his bat.

Sources told that the team management in Johannesburg would be making a formal announcement this afternoon at 1.30 P.M. in this regard.

It may be recalled that the fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar yesterday during the Twenty20 World Cup preparation had lost temper and injured Muhammad Asif by hitting him with his bat.
