Pakistan bagged five medals at the Special Olympics World Winter Games being held at Ramsau in Austria.

Sabahat Tariq claimed the gold medal in the women's 100 metre sprint, while Huzaifa Qazi and Pervaiz Ahmad took home silver in the men's 100-metre sprint.

Fatima Amir and Muhammad Abdullah respectively won silver and copper medals in taekwondo.

Over 3,000 Special Olympics athletes from 110 countries are participating in the 2017 Winter Games.

They have made the nation proud. That being said the facilities as well as opportunities available for special people are very limited in Pakistan. In the west they are taught to earn for themselves, even seek a normal education. Its very different in Pakistan. I hope things improve.

The team has bagged two gold medals, five silver medals and four bronze medals in the event.

According to the latest updates, Huzaifa Qazi claimed the gold in the 200-metre snowshoe race whereas Muhammad Hamza Aslam won bronze in the men's 200-metre race.

In addition, Farah Ahsan won a bronze medal in the 200-metre race.

Qazi, while speaking to the media, said, "I am very happy for winning the gold medal for Pakistan."

"I want to return to the Olympics next time too," he said.

Pakistani athletes bring home 16 medals from Special Olympics World Winter Games


The 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games concluded in Austria on Saturday, with the Pakistan contingent returning home with an impressive tally of 16 medals.

Over 3,000 Special Olympics athletes from 110 countries participated in the 2017 Winter Games.

The games ended with a colourful ceremony in the Austrian city of Graz on Saturday.

Pakistani athletes claimed three gold, seven silver and six bronze medals at the event.

The women's snowshoeing team won gold in the relay race, covering the distance in a minute and 54 seconds. The men's team won a silver medal in the same race.

Huzaifa Qazi claimed the gold in the 200-metre snowshoe race, whereas Muhammad Hamza Aslam won bronze in the men's 200-metre race.

Javed Afridi announces cash award

Cricket franchise Peshawar Zalmi's owner, Javed Afridi, announced a cash award for Pakistanis who won medals at the Special Olympics World Winter Games.

Afridi said in a tweet the Peshawar Zalmi Foundation will give away a prize of Rs100,000 to each Pakistani medallist.

Pakistan clinch 16 medals in Special Olympics Winter Games

KARACHI: Pakistani athletes ended their Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017 campaign with 16 medals in Austria.

The closing ceremony of the Games took place on March 25, while the Pakistan squad will be returning home today.

Pakistan won three gold medals: Huzaifa bagged the first in the 200m snowshoeing race, Sabahat Tariq the second in the 100m race, while Pakistan’s girls’ team took the top position in 4×100 relay race to claim the third gold for Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Pakistan also claimed seven silver medals, with two each won by Fatima Amir and Pervez Ahmed, and six bronze medals.

Pakistan were fielding 12 athletes including Huzaifa, Muhammad Hamza Aslam, Hameezuddin, Usama Aziz, Muhammad Abdullah, Pervez, Sabahat, Fatima, Farah Ehsan, Mehwish Tufail, Rimsha Naeem and Tehmeena.

Eight athletes competed in the snowshoeing events, while four participated in cross-country skiing.

The athletes were picked from all over the country, with three from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, two from Abbottabad, three from Gilgit-Baltistan, and one each from Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and Murree.

According to the SOP officials, they spent a year preparing for the event and held an overall six training camps, including a vigorous training session in Naltar, with the Ski Federation of Pakistan’s help.

Meanwhile, according to the chief of the delegation Aneesur Rehman, the athletes enjoyed their stay in Austria and competed with a very high spirit.

This was the second time that Pakistan competed in the World Winter Games.

The contingent representing Pakistan at the Special Olympic Winter Games beamed with pride as they arrived in Islamabad on Sunday .

"Medals, medals, medals and success," said Shumaila Erum, while speaking to DawnNews at Islamabad Airport regarding the success of Pakistani Athletes she had coached and accompanied to Austria for the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017.

The group of athletes representing Pakistan were welcomed home by relatives and loved ones.

Wearing their medals around their necks and smiling for the cameras, the athletes' joy and excitement on returning home after a brilliant performance was evident.

"The team has come back to their home with 16 medals and a lot of pride," Erum added.

"I hope that the people in our society celebrate the success of these athletes in a fitting manner. We work with their abilities, not their disabilities," she said.

As they arrived at Islamabad airport, the athletes expressed pride and happiness at having represented their country well in the games, where over 3,000 athletes from 110 countries had participated.

"It feels so good, we have brought pride to our country," one athlete said as he thanked his parents and loved ones for their support.

The contingent has returned to Pakistan with an impressive tally of 16 medals, which included three gold, seven silver and six bronze medals.
