Islamabad: Two Americans were killed when an explosives-laden car rammed a vehicle leaving the US Consulate in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar on Monday, a report said.

The incident occurred a short distance from the US Consulate and an office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees at Aabdara Road in University Town, Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

There was some confusion over the toll with initial media reports putting the deaths at three in the blast that took place close to the UN refugee agency office.

About 12 injured, including several foreigners, were taken to nearby hospitals, police and witnesses said.

Local TV footage showed an SUV at the site that was completely destroyed and burned. All that was left was a carcass of blackened, twisted metal.

A half-burnt US passport was recovered from the car that was badly damaged in the blast.

Several foreign organisations, including the UN, have offices in the area where the attack occurred. Security forces cordoned off the area after the blast.

Police estimated that up to 100 kg of explosives material was used in the terror attack that left a big crater in the road and destroyed a Jeep. The walls of four nearby houses were damaged.

The bombing took place barely four days after at least nine people, including two children, were killed and over 20 injured in a bomb blast in an auto workshop in Mattni Bazaar on the outskirts of Peshawar.

Sources told Dawn that threats had been received two days ago about an attack on the US consulate after which security had been heightened.

Peshawar is located near Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region, the main sanctuary for Taliban and al Qaeda militants in the country. The city has been hit by scores of bombings in recent years, but attacks against American targets are relatively rare, likely because of the extensive security measures taken by the US government.

The nationality ofthe killed is not confirmed yet but two foreigners are said to injured.

We condemn this terror attack. The area is the most guarded one in Peshawar so the incident is likely to further enhance the security and thus more hardships for local commuters but all for security

More security for all those who already get enough security. As for the common man it is not his right to even think about getting security from the government.

A vehicle of the US Consulate was the target of the attack, sources said, adding that technical and administrative staff of the Consulate were occupants in the targeted vehicle.

The blast took place near an office of the United Nations (UN) when a vehicle laden with explosives rammed into the consulate’s car.

The bomb-proof consulate vehicle was destroyed in the blast, whereas, several other vehicles and five to six nearby buildings were also damaged. The explosion left a four-feet-wide and eight-feet-deep crater on the road and uprooted electricity poles in the vicinity.

CCPO Peshawar Imtiaz Altaf confirmed that 110 kilograms of explosives were used in the attack.

Sources at the Khyber Teaching Hospital confirmed that two dead bodies had been received and 19 injured people had been brought in for treatment after the blast. The passport of a US national was also found from the site of the explosion.

The US embassy also confirmed that two foreigners were injured in the blast who were shifted to the US Club in another consulate vehicle immediately after the attack. The US Embassy Islamabad released the following statement by Department of State Spokesperson Ambassador Victoria Nuland:“We can confirm that a vehicle belonging to the US Consulate in Peshawar was hit in an apparent terrorist attack. Two US personnel and two Pakistani staff of the Consulate were injured and are receiving medical treatment. No US Consulate personnel were killed, but we are seeking further information about other victims of this heinous act. We stand ready to work with Pakistani authorities on a full investigation so that the perpetrators can be brought to justice.”

US: No Americans Killed in Pakistan Blast

The U.S. embassy in Islamabad denies that any Americans were killed in a deadly blast Monday in northwest Pakistan.

Earlier, Pakistani officials said a suicide car bomber had killed two Americans in the explosion in the city of Peshawar, near Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal region along the Afghan border. Some reports said two Pakistanis died.

There are conflicting reports on whether more than two people were killed in the attack, which authorities say left several people wounded.

Officials say the attacker rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a U.S. government car. Police say the bomber's vehicle was loaded with 110 kilograms of explosives.

The explosion happened in an area of Peshawar that is home to several foreign aid organizations and the United Nations.

The bomber struck the vehicle after it left the U.S. consulate.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Pakistani Taliban, the Afghan Taliban, al-Qaida and affiliated militant groups are entrenched in the tribal regions and take advantage of the porous border to launch attacks against NATO and Afghan forces in Afghanistan.
