SIALKOT: Federal Secretary of Water Resources Shumail Ahmed Khawaja has said that the entire nation is taking part in the dam fundraising campaign.


Addressing the members of the District Bar Association (DBA) Sialkot on Tuesday, he said that the issue of water had become critical for Pakistan. He said that due to our (Pakistanis) collective and individual slackness, the issue of water had grown serious.

He opined that a new dam was the guarantee of security and survival of the country and Pakistan could not afford any more delay in this connection. He said that all the institutions and stakeholders would be motivated to achieve the target of constructing a new dam.

“Since the inception of the country, no solid and reliable policy has been chalked out to save the precious water. By formulating the new policy as the 'water charter', Pakistan has given a positive message to the world.”

The secretary said that a new dam would not only help improve the water storage capacity but it would also help greatly in producing loads of cheap hydro-power. Khawaja later donated Rs200,000 for the Lawyers Welfare Fund (LWF) whereas Ch Salim Baryar donated Rs550,000, DC Dr Syed Bilal Haider Rs100,000, Haji M Rasheed Rs100,000 and others also donated.

Pakistan needs both indus cascade dams and CPEC at the same time.

Almost $50 billion dollar required in order to build Indus cascade dams which includes Pattan, Thacoat, Bunji, Dasau and Diamer etc.

China is funding on the projects which can further boost the CPEC so the BRI too. But we can't just sign the unwarranted MoUs with Chines company for example three gorgeous dam Corporation offered $15 billion investment for diamer dam with a condition in which Pakistan will not be able to get the right amount of share ever.

Sir what analysis?
Do we not need dam?
How much revenue Motorway will generate?
Do you know when M2 was created its interest alone was greater then total revenue of NHA.
Have you visited any industry?
Do you have any idea how many of them closed or working off & on?
Do you know reason why?
They don't have Gas to produce cheap electricity issue was never about order but cost of producing goods.
I have visited multiple industries have chat with person in different level knows what going on in companies and status of industry in general.
Now please ask your self that your Verdict is based on your vast knowledge or your preference and internet search.

i am not against cpec i am talking about priority.
You need industry their was huge boom during Musharraf time but what that industry need the most?
New Road (Motorway) for quick access?
New port (Gawadar)?
Coal Plant (Already expensive project)?
Or Dam (Cheap and surplus electricity for industries and water for agriculture)

Your Sialkot survived without airport and they used their own money to built it.
Foreign buyer had to take Lahore Airport all aircargo was from Lahore but Sialkot not only
survived but flourish.
& whats wrong with Kala Bagh Dam. no issue from world bank.
Your business community show willingness to support Dam but wanted it to be investment not donation.

As far as I know that 100 small dams already included in CPEC but not even a major dam like dasu, muhmand, daimer, bunji etc..

China already forced Pakistan not to include daimer or any other major dam in CPEC..

Is world bank has any issue on Kala Bagh Dam? Is KP problem is genuine why not end provincial subsidy once and for all?
what about Metro Bus + Train and other Govt. project all Loss? Cost+interest+Maintenance Subsidy.
Why not shutdown Karachi Steel mill for good?
Why not down size of PIA employee based on merit and actual man power required?
Take any Govt. project
Danish School What about existing school?
Waste Management to 3rd party?

Govt. run institute are getting high salaries time to reduce size by removing incompetent & Corrupt and maintaining effective system (from book to system from Several windows to one window operation)
Can you justify in a poor country a govt. employee whose only job is to write letter and that too he can't do it correctly was getting 50~60k/month + incentive & that is 5 year old story so don't forget to add increment.
Where did the massive borrowing during democratically elected Nawaz & Zardari goes??????
& if that massive borrowing went in to our economy then don't you think govt should have its own cash to use it on dam.
Your metro train now cost Rs 250 billion for construction
& for maintenance + operation you need more money daily
and that 250 billion is loan so add interest on it yearly.

If you say its punjab money
Don't forget Chiniot Dam 49MW and Run of River + Canal potential in Punjab
And end provincial loyalty on Dam and KP will be on front to support Kala Bagh Dam.
KP Govt. want more money from Dam liyalty but oppose Kala Bagh because no money for them.

I can understand your sentiments as a Pakistani. But things don't work as per wish especially if governance is being controlled by the incompetents like in past PMLN & PPP they both should be blamed and charged for the wrong doing with economy..

Right now govt priority is economy that is again can't be achieved without cheap energy because this the only way to compete with region I.e bangladesh. Because if industries are getting higher price of the end products so those industries can't compete regionally then forget about globally.

This is do or die situations for Pakistan. We don't have enough support either by world bank or China regarding the construction of major dams. And we also can't easily transfer the money of CPEC into major hydro power projects.

I don't know what Pakistan will do in this current circumstances.

Pakistan is a security state so defense is Pakistan's priority. First of all they need to spend on defense to balance India's power which is a 10X big economy and 5+ time bigger budget. so untill Pakistan matches India, she will continue to spend on defense. How Pakistan shall be able to spare the money foe dams is a big question mark. I hope they will be able to spare some money for Dam.
They can ask IMF to fund company constructing dam straight away. They can gine contract to a company like L & T for quality work. China has messed up the project in Myanmar. So my personal advice to Pakistan is to avoid Chinese company for contract.

Sir it is not right to blame everything on PML-N & PPP.
KP govt. PTI second tenure now.
What PTI did in KP with provincial fund for Hydro power (excluding those joke project(few kW capacity)
Federal Govt PTI (PIA, Steel mill, corrupt and incompetent Govt. employee)
PTI will sell companies who are making profit and maintain those which are making massive losses.
