The true faces
Published: August 30, 2011
Going by his remarks he made while talking to the media at the State Guest House at Lahore on Sunday, Prime Minister Gilani seemed to recognise the true faces of India and the USA, but created a sense of puzzlement why his government does not act on those beliefs. He said that the USA was an important country, and Pakistan wanted to have good relations with it “on the basis of mutual respect and interest”. His admission that talks were underway to grant Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India must be related to this. It is because the USA has decided to back India in its regional desires of hegemony in exchange for its becoming its regional counterweight against China, that it has fallen in with Indian desires about Pakistan, and wishes it to become a mere adjunct of India’s, with the grant of MFN status something which India has long desired. It cannot be ruled out that Islamabad’s anxiety to get such a deal, to please the USA more than India, will lead it to ignore the multitude of non-tariff barriers India has put up.
This alone should prove to Mr Gilani the incompatibility of interests between Pakistan and the USA. For Pakistan, giving MFN status would mean the destruction of its industry, the impoverishment of its people and a frittering away of a useful bargaining point in its struggle to make India accept its commitments to the Kashmiri people and the international community. For the USA, it would merely be another favour done to India by bringing pressure to bear upon a ruling elite anxious to please it.
This leaves one inescapable conclusion, that Pakistan is not merely helped by its American alliance, it now finds that its vital interests are threatened. Therefore, Mr Gilani should take the action which his logic makes inevitable, and that is the ending of the American alliance, as well as Pakistani participation in the USA’s war on terror. As Mr Gilani said, Pakistan’s location made it an inevitable part of the war, but he did not explain why Pakistan must take sides with the Crusaders.

Explain why Pakistan must take sides with the Crusaders.

Most friendly nation , to India has no real meaning , as really if the relations are such where people travel openly between India and Pakistan then I could understand , but at present we just need to work on improving ties and keep them open , and encourage peace

I personally feel USA should be kicked out of any peace negotiations

Seems most Pakistanis don't even understand what World Trade Orgs's MFN status means.

They think it is some kind of leverage they hold over India..which they can use as bargaining chips on other fronts.

It is merely a tool for increasing the bilateral b/w two countries.

India has ongoing issues with China ..but we haven't let those issues become a hindrance in trade... because that is how economies grow ..India has wanted to replicate similar ties with Pakistan.

It is not like Pakistan is big consumer market for Indian goods..even trade potential is minuscule..when compared with other coutries.
Pakistan on the other hand is already smuggling $2 Billion worth of India goods via Dubai every year ..figure it would much cheaper for you guys to directly buy from India.

Mistrust is the Great Barrier between Expanding the Trade ...

Remove this Barrier and you "could" have 1 of the Best Bilateral Trade Relationships in the world.

Perhaps india should clarify the meaning by granting Pakistan the MFN status.

It is merely a tool for increasing the bilateral b/w two countries.

If so, every country would have enjoyed this status.

Of course, india has ongoing issues with the China and those issues aren't very sweet, more or less like the Palestinians have ongoing issues with the israelis. The fact that india will never grant China the MFN status is a proof of that.

It is not like Pakistan is big consumer market for Indian goods.

And we can see that you are very keen to change that with a helping hand from your uncle.

Pakistan on the other hand is already smuggling $2 Billion worth of India goods via Dubai every year ..figure it would much cheaper for you guys to directly buy from India.

Smugglers are not really known for their patriotism.

MFN does not mean Most Friendly Nation.
It means Most "Favoured" Nation.
It effectively means the recipient country will receive trade benefits in terms of low tax.Its a win-win situation actually.Indian business houses will be happy to pay less tax,and common Pakistanis will be happy to get that Nano at half the cost of what they had to pay otherwise.

Perhaps you should read about it ..it is not an Indian treaty but a WTO clause.

most-favoured-nation treatment (MFN) (international trade) -- Britannica Online Encyclopedia

It is but a bilateral treaty and a reciprocatory one at that ..you can not enjoy my MFN unless you give me MFN status.

Of course, india has ongoing issues with the China and those issues aren't very sweet, more or less like the Palestinians have ongoing issues with the israelis. The fact that india will never grant China the MFN status is a proof of that.

Will China grant MFN status to India?
Besides India- China trade does not need a MFN clause ..as it is already doing well.
And we can see that you are very keen to change that with a helping hand from your uncle.

And how can we or even anybody's uncles or aunties do that.. can we increase the purchasing power Pakistani people ..It is a small country with small trade volumes and purchasing power.

Smugglers are not really known for their patriotism.

Smugglers only bring in the goods ..it is your common everyday Pakistani patriots who consume them despite being sold at much higher retail price that MRP.
ie They consume Indian goods nonetheless but buy them at many times the original rate..all because they can not do away with their ego ..and don't want to pick goods directly from India.
