LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th Apr, 2019 ) :It is a good omen that Pakistan has developed capacity to manufacture 90 per cent medicines locally while only 10 per cent have to imported from abroad.

Around 1,668 drug companies have been issued licences so far, including companies preparing herbal and allopathic medicines, by the Drugs Regulatory Authority Pakistan(DRAP). Over 4,000 herbal companies had applied for registration of their products with DRAP.

This was stated by chairman, Patients Rights Forum, Dr Noor Mehar, while talking to APP here on Sunday.

He said that a large number of unregistered herbal drug companies had been operating in the country while only 4,000 bothered to apply for their enlistment and registration while mostly companies including some big firms did not apply.

DRAP issued licences to 856 herbal companies, while 812 licences had been issued to allopathic companies so far. However, many applications are pending due to shortage of staff.

Responding to a question, Dr Noor said that Pakistan is the fifth largest market of medicines in the world after China, India, USA and Brazil with volume of Rs 800 billion. He said that many herbal companies of Pakistan were also exporting herbal medicines to 155 countries with an annual earning of Rs 80 billion.

However, he said Pakistan could earn huge foreign exchange by exporting herbal medicines if the process of issuance of licences to herbal companies is made more simple and fast.

absolute bullcrap..Pakistan has no chemical industry and thus unlike india we dont manufacturer any medications..we do package them and have some acess to african market but thats it

Then why medicines are so expensive? Also govt should crackdown on fake drugs ...
pakistan needs its oil and chemical industry to develop to opne up drug base manufacturing..thats why IK and asad umar were pushing for a refinery and petrochemical complex

Then why medicines are so expensive? Also govt should crackdown on fake drugs ...
drugs are expensive because of this
a stanadard antibiotics like ceftriaxone cost 350 rs(3 years ago).
100-150rs will go to doc as commission, 50-75 rs is cost of the drug 100rs is middle man cash

It doesn't say we manufacture them but we have the capacity to do so

We have too many chemists and pharmacists graduating and uni has research capacity for synthesizing drugs just need proper factories. ..

We get from Africa because Africa has a special license like India go produce same drugs at lower price

he is referring to API or active pharmaceutical ingredient. It is not that Pakistan cannot manufacture it, India makes it so cheap that pharmaceuticals have no interest in manufacturing it. They did say they were going to ban it after the attack I don't know if that happened or not. Pharmaceuticals do not buy API directly they use offshore companies and add profit to cost and then sell it to their local subsidiary which manufactures the medicine and then add profit to the cost and sell it off.

If we can make it locally it would be cheaper for us...as for mega companies I always say they should be boycotted ...too many shady news abt thei'r trials and hidden side effects

As for herbal base....I know of too many uni doing research on herbal base and the compounds involved using latest tech....Pakistan could collaborate and find something new but god forbid our maharaja ki all add manages to do something or produce anything

A million Iraqis died when the US/Zionists imposed sanctions on Iraq; mainly due to the embaro on drugs. Pakistan is a far larger country, if the same happened to Pakistan the death toll would be far higher. Apart from normal economic reasons, there should be a major push to indiginise drug production. You don't need rocket scientists, simply purchase the licence for them.

I doubt that...it really is that cheap that no one thinks twice over the matter but I have mentioned the catalyst for change and that was sanctions which either happened after 27 Feb or not. If we were to boycott mega companies good luck getting newer medicines. Let's be clear we manufacture medicine and not invent them. Generic medicine are those whose patents has expired.

Yea I know we don't invent them ...but we need to cut our import somehow..maybe a deal that we manufacture the raw ingredients in return we get discount on the end product or something?

This is slightly old report, yes Pakistan does manufacture a large part of medicines/drugs locally, with imported drugs as well.

Today Pakistan has about 759 pharmaceutical manufacturing units including those operated by 25 multinationals present in the country. The Pakistan Pharmaceutical Industry meets around 70% of the country’s demand of Finished Medicine. The domestic pharma market, in term of share market is almost evenly divided between the Nationals and the Multinationals.

I think we should expand this...It will cut down our import which is toppling our economy...
